After ruling the tennis world for almost five years, Roger Federer is adjusting to life at No. 2. but, like any king whose throne has been taken away, the Swiss star is already planning secretly his return to power, beginning at this week’s US Open.

The problem is, many experts think he will never do it. They blame everything from age and tough competition to his racket and psychology.

For years Federer, 27, had enjoyed the view from the top. Competitors saw him as undefeated, and for the most part he was. However, before the 2019 season began, Federer had an illness that stole

第 3 页

his strength and clearly affected his play on the court. Ever since, he has struggled to return to form, winning just two of his last 14 tournaments.

“ Twenty-seven is an age when your body starts talking back to you.” Tennis great John McEnroe told the New York Times.

Pancho Sefura, another tennis great, noted that Federer is also facing a maturing crop of young talents. “ There are too many great players now,” he said, naming Britain’s Andy Murray, 21, and Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis, 20.

US magazine Sports Illustrated tennis columnist Jon Wertheim suggested that part of Federer’s problem could be his insistence on using a small racket. He says that the smaller head demands ball control. But we see time and again that racket makers try to get players to use a certain stick --- one they would like to market to consumers and it has a negative effect on the professional game.

Sports psychologist Jim Loehr told the Times that Federer is probably feeling “a sense of doubt” after being considered as undefeated for so long. If Federer is to recover his state of being undefeated, Loehr said he must overcome his doubt. “Federer doesn’t need fame and money. But he has to get better. He has to go to a whole new level. That’s the only way he stays in the game,” he said.

As for beginning his first Grand Slam(大满贯) in ages as the No. 2 seed, Federer said it might be for the beset. “Five years almost, I was expected to win every tournament I entered,” he said, “so maybe Rafael Nadal now feels what I had to feel for a very long time. It will be interesting to see how he handles it.

A. Nadal--- The No.1 Tennis player B. Federer--- Always Undefeated C. State of Mind Plays a Vital Role

D. Federer Hopes to Recover His Magic B Dear Cary,

I’m writing because I’ve understood you’ve struggled with alcoholism. I’ve been fighting mine ever since I went through 9-11. After that, I’ve been more or less useless professionally –I’m a lawyer–and have had to resign from my job because I was discovered passed-out drunk in front of my computer. I’ve taken some medicine and it has helped somewhat. I can manage about a month without drinking, but after that I end up having a crazy stage where nothing matters except drinking. After a week or so of heavy drinking, I start having nightmares of people jumping. After that, it’s a week of not being able to get out of bed.

I was supposed to travel to a conference but didn’t make it because I got so drunk at the airport that I fell down on my face and spent the rest of the day in the emergency room. I have been hiding

第 4 页

from my family since then. Fortunately they won’t be expecting me to come back for a week or so. Otherwise, they would notice the bump on my forehead and two black eyes.

I don’t really know what I’m asking you. Cary, I need a way out that doesn’t involve causing pain to my family. I’m taking medicine, but I still have these attacks every few months. If there’s alcohol in the house, I can’t stay away from it. It seems that this will never end. I’m afraid of what will happen if something bad happens, like a family member dying, or getting fired again.

Thanks for reading.

Yours T

According to a famous optical(光学) expert, Alexander, who recently visited Shanghai, the developed countries in Europe and America have made rules that children must wear resinous(树脂) glasses instead of the traditional glasses made of glass. This is because the glass glasses are more likely to do harm to children’s eyesight.

Alexander pointed out: wearing the right glasses as soon as possible is still the best way to cure and put right children’s eyesight problems.

In America and Japan the resinous glasses have taken up 80 percent of the glasses market. And some European countries and America have made it a law that children, teenagers and drivers must wear resinous glasses. Now, about 10 million children in China have different eyesight problems and they need timely treatment.

But still, too many parents are buying the traditional glass glasses for their children. This is mainly because many parents know little or nothing about the good points of the resinous glasses. Besides, the price for the new glasses is a little higher than the traditional ones. 64. This news article mainly wants to tell us _______.

The average person learns most of the 30 000~40 000 words whose meanings he or she recognizes by hearing them or getting familiar with them in the context or simply absorbing them without conscious effort. The best way to build a good vocabulary, therefore, is to read a great deal and to participate in a lot of good talks. There are relatively few words that we learn permanently by purposefully referring to dictionaries or keeping word lists. However, even those extra few are of value, and no one will make a mistake by working on developing a larger vocabulary. Here are some suggestions of how to do it.

Read plenty of good books. When you come across a new word, or a new meaning of an old word, stop and see if you can understand it from its context. If you can't, and if you can manage without interrupting the thought of the book too much, look it up in a dictionary or ask somebody and then repeat its meaning to yourself a couple of times. If you are really conscientious(认真的), write the word and its meaning in a personal vocabulary list — preferably using it in a sentence, or you can keep a special vocabulary notebook. Go over the list from time to time. Further, try to use a new word in writing or conversation a few times over the next several days.

Listen to good talks and be alert to new words you hear or to new meanings of words you already know. Then treat them just as you treat the new words you read.

Learn and be alert to the parts of words: prefixes, suffixes and roots. Knowing them enables you to make intelligent guesses about the meaning of words.

If you are studying a foreign language, be alert to words in that language which relate to words in English. English has inherited or borrowed much of its vocabulary of 500 000~600 000 words from Latin, Greek, French, Spanish and German.

67. When you meet a new word in reading, what should you do? A. Guess its meaning. B. Ask somebody. C. Look it up in a dictionary. D. All of the above.

68. According to this passage, the best way to build a good vocabulary is _______. A. to remember a lot B. to read a great deal C. to take part in a lot of good talks D. both B and C

69. The phrase “be alert to” in the third paragraph may best be replaced by “_______”. A. look at B. pay attention to C. write down D. learn by heart 70. In the fourth paragraph, the word “them” refers to _______. A. the parts of words B. prefixes C. suffixes D. roots

71 The average American moves every five years. People drive straight into their garages, hire lawn services, hang out in their backyards instead of their front porches (前走廊). These days, neighbors don't even know each other's names.

Good neighbors and good friends are a lot like electricity or running water. 72

The surprising thing is that all it takes to strengthen your relationship with friends and neighbors is respect for their feelings, concern for their property, and a helping hand when it's needed. 73

First, be a true friend to people around you. 74 That is to say, A true friend is one who stays true through it all--marriage, parenthood, new jobs, new homes, or even losses. That situations change doesn't mean the person has to.

第 6 页

Besides, friendships fade away if there isn't a balance between the give and the take. 75 Be sensitive to how much your friend can and can't offer you----time, energy, or help-----and don't step over the line. Remember: friendships that tire each other will not last. If a friendship is out of balance in this way, you'll need to consider the situation.

A. Modern life is a lot less to the advantage of friendships and neighborliness than it used to be. B.A friend in need is a friend indeed.

C. We don't know how much we depend on them until we lose them.

D. Here're two important ways to deepen your friendship with people around in your life. E. A true friend doesn't flee when changes come about. F. Take your time, please.

G. So make sure you aren't being a burden to your friends.
