Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton) is a US fading movie star who once played *iconic superhero Birdman in three blockbuster movies but refused the fourth sequel. After two decades, the middle aged Thomson has almost been forgotten by fans. The egotistical actor struggles to regain his former glory and to prove himself as a real performing artist by writing, directing and starring in a theater play. Birdman starts with Thomson sitting in the dressing room of a historic theater and follows the process of him preparing and performing his play. If you simply expect an inspirational comeback story, this film might disappoint you.
Before his Broadway debut, he causes a stir with a video of him dashing *frantically wearing nothing but his underwear through Times Square.
Thomson later uses a real gun to shoot himself in front of the audience in the theater. In the end of the movie, Thomson’s daughter Sam (Emma Stone) stands in his room in the hospital, but the father is gone, leaving the viewers to guess where he’s going and whether he survives.
Probably no one would better understand the main character than Michael Keaton. The 63-year-old American actor first gained fame for his portrayal of the Gotham hero in Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992). But now when we talk about Batman, we all talk about Christian Bale, maybe also Ben Affleck in the future. Who remembers Keaton?
We have to give the credit to Emmanuel Lubezki for making Birdman fast paced and fluent. The Oscar winning cameraman uses impossibly long tracking shots in the movie, making us feel that it is unfolding in one continuous take. From the reality of Thomson preparing for his show to the illusion of himself flying over the Manhattan city as Birdman, the genius cinematographer
allows the film to veer without a break.
Throughout the movie, Thomson swings between having high self-esteem and incessantly doubting whether the audience will accept him again. It’s hard to tell whether he’s acting for the sake of art or to *ingratiate himself with the critics.
Many say Birdman mocks the modern film industry. Whether or not this is true, director Alejandro González Inárritu has successfully raised serious questions about the fading nature of fame in show business. 56. Which of the following is WRONG about the character Riggan Thomson in the movie?
A. He was once a brilliant star in the USA two decades ago. B. He ends up disappearing in the film in a mysterious way. C. He succeeds in proving himself to be an outstanding artist. D. He ever starred iconic superhero Birdman three times.
57. All of the following stars acted or will act as Batman EXCEPT________________.
A. Christian Bale B. Emma Stone C. Ben Affleck D. Michael Keaton
58. What’s the purpose of this passage? A. To introduce. B. To comment. C. To entertain. D. To advertise. B
Do you sometimes talk out loud to yourself? Well, studies show that it’s more common than many of us may care to admit, according to a recent Wall Street Journal column.
In addition, these studies suggest talking to oneself can influence our thoughts and behavior. Self-talk happens when you make yourself the target of your own comments, advice or reminders. Sometimes it’s automatic, such as when we wonder aloud in a supermarket where to find a certain item; other times we do it deliberately to influence our own behavior. The act of giving ourselves mental messages can help us learn and perform at our best, according to another article in Time magazine.
“What happens with self-talk is that you stimulate your action, direct your action and evaluate your action,” Antonis Hatzigeorgiadis told The Wall Street Journal. Hatzigeorgiadis is an associate professor at the University of Thessaly in Trikala, Greece, who studies self-talk and the psychology of sports performance.
Self-talk isn’t just motivational messages like “You can do it!” A review of more than two dozen studies, published in the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science, found that there’s another kind of mental message that is even more useful, called “instructional self-talk”. This is the kind of conversation we have with ourselves when we’re carrying out a difficult task. Think of when you first learn to drive, you may say to yourself: “Foot on the gas pedal(加速器), hands on the wheel, slow down for the turn here…”
Focus on you
Over time, says the Time article, giving yourself instructions becomes unnecessary. But while you’re learning, it does three important things: “First, it increases our attention, focusing us on the important elements of the task and screening out distractions. Second, it helps us make decisions about what to do, how to do it, and when. And third, self-talk allows us to control our cognitive (认知的) and emotional reactions, steadying us so we stay on task.”
Hatzigeorgiadis advises keeping your instructions short, precise and consistent until your self-coaching becomes automatic. The way you address yourself also matters, says the Wall Street Journal article. Research has found that people who speak to themselves using their own name or
the pronoun “you” perform better under stress than people who use the word “I”.
When people think of themselves as another person, “it allows them to give themselves objective, helpful feedback,” says Ethan Kross, associate professor of psychology at the University of Michigan in the US.
Both positive and negative words can influence us in positive and negative ways, according to the Wall Street Journal article. Say to yourself, “This job interview is going to be a piece of cake,” and you may not get psyched up (做好思想准备的) enough to make it. On the other hand, tell yourself: “You just lost that match, and you need to focus harder,” and it could prompt you to do better in the future. 59. In which case may NOT self-talk happen?
A. when you intend to remind yourself to do something important.
B. when you have difficulty in finding a certain item while shopping in the supermarket. C. when you decide to make comments on someone around you. D. when you encourage yourself to cheer up.
60. What’s the purpose of the instance of driving in Para 5?
A. To further explain what is instructional self-talk.
B. To indicate the importance of instructional self-talk.
C. To warn us to be careful when we just drive a car. D. To inform us that driving as a green hand is difficult task.
61. When you are having an instructional self-talk, which of the following is less important?
A. the length of the instructions B. the consistency of the content C. the way of your self-coaching D. the mental state you say to yourself
62. Professor Kross may approve the following idea that ________________.
A. positive and negative words while self-talking can make a difference to us
B. self-talk performs better under pressure than it does without any stress C. when addressing yourself, you’d better use “you” rather than “I”
D. imagining yourself to be another person may create a more helpful emotional reaction C
Job-hunting is like a game. Without a walkthrough (预演), one often succeeds through trial and error. But a short video released by Peking University provides students with some useful advice: The key to success is paying attention to the details.
Student Career Center of Peking University produced the short video to explain the different stages of job hunting and point out little things students need to pay attention to in each stage. The video is called The Dos & Don’ts of Job Hunting. And more than 15,000 viewers have watched it on in the past two months.
Initial troubleshooting (排查)
“All the examples in the video are based on students’ real-life problems. Senior students with little experience of job hunting find it very useful,” says Lei Hao, 20, a film directing major at Peking University who is also the video’s screenwriter.
In it, a graduate teaches his junior schoolmate how to impress human resources (HR) staff. The first step is to write a good resume that highlights one’s advantages instead of just providing a simple self-introduction.
_________a_________
Zhang Liang, an HR professional at a Beijing-based accounting firm, says it’s the details in a
resume that differentiate applicants. Some students offer only their transcript. “But considerate and confident students provide their class ranking because scores are less informative than a ranking,” she says.
_________b_________
Besides the above, a careless appearance can rule out the possibility of getting a job.
As is shown in the video, some students dress up too much or put on too much makeup. “It’s not a smart choice, because the interviewer could be distracted by their appearance and overlook their skills,” says Xiao Wancai, HR professional at Guangdong Zhicheng Champion Group Co Ltd. Also, wearing too much perfume is considered unpleasant by HR staff. “We want talents with flexibility, not someone who is too mature,” says Zhang.
__________c________
Appearance is a huge part of the interview, but performance counts even more. Some students shoot themselves in the foot because they try too hard to impress the interviewer.
Sometimes they introduce themselves in English. But when they are asked a question in English, they panick, because their English is actually not so good, says Chen Chen, HR director of Shanghao Zhuolang Interactive Co Ltd.
It’s best not to show off in the beginning.
“We have higher expectations of students who conduct English self-introduction than other applicants, so it’s easier for them to fail if they don’t 63. Three subtitles are left out. Which group of the following matches is true? ① Don’t show off ② More than a transcript ③ Sense of dress and smell
A. a---③ b--② c--① B. a---② b--③ c--① C. a---② b--① c--③ D. a---③ b--① c--②
64. According to the passage, when someone is intended to face a job interview, he should make all the following preparations EXCEPT________________.
A. writing a resume including his strengths and his class ranking
B. putting on moderate make up and dressing neatly
C. dressing himself as a mature adult
D. wearing little perfume to make himself smell good
65. What does the underlined word “them” in the last paragraph refer to?

On Nov 11 of 2006, I made a deal with myself that I would give $1 to every homeless person who asked. Call it a moment of clarity or whatever, but I woke up from a rough night of partying in Vegas and just felt like this model of taking wasn't working for me anymore.
Still, to be honest, I set about this experiment thinking that I would just bleed money, that there would be 20 or so homeless people a day coming up to me in NYC and that I would run out of money soon. This never happened.
When I returned to NY, it took 8 days before I walked past a homeless person who asked me for some spare change. And by that time I had seen the folly of my own mind and was more than happy to part with a little dollar. It wasn't about the money, though. In fact, it was never about the money. It was me and my mind getting comfortable with giving and giving from a place of not having a lot of resources. Still, I have more than they and it felt so good. I continue to do this experiment today.
Here's what happened.
On my way to my NYU grad acting audition, I ran across two homeless persons -- a woman named Francine and a man named Barret. I told Francine I'd be right back because I had to tell a friend where I was; and I gave Barret $1. When I came back Francine was in tears. After a big hug, she went on to tell me that nobody listened to her. Nobody looked at her; people just walked right by her and didn't even acknowledge that she was alive. My heart broke. We hugged on the street for a few seconds and then I asked her if she'd like something to eat. She said yes, and we went into the local McDonalds. Through her sobs and laughs, we ordered her a #6 fish meal (supersized of course!). I gave her a $20, told her I had to run and said I'd see her soon. I left feeling helpless.
The next day, when I walked past Barret I gave him a dollar again. To give you a visual, Barret is in his late 30's, a completely free spirit, as far as I can tell. He's reading books about psychology and physics and always tells me about his platonic (柏拉图式的) girlfriends that he has that come around to him for conversation.
I don't even know why I did it, but I just sat down to be with him. I had “be the change” ringing in my head. So what did I want to see more of in the world? I want to see more and realizing that parting with $1 isn't about the money. It's about helping them push through their own fear of change and enhance compassion in their lives.
And so, I sat with Barret, in the cold, for an hour and a half. We drank hot chocolate and asked for spare change from people. Mostly I just listened and was extremely humbled by the experience of simply sitting and watching my point change from being someone who simply walks by to someone who's now a poor beggar.
As we were talking, he was telling me about how upset he becomes when people don't acknowledge him or they'll laugh at his funny sign (“Voldermort (伏地魔) broke my want. Need $ for a new one”) but not leave anything in return.
New York. It's a city of takers, with very few true givers in the crowd. Over an hour and a half he made 70 cents. That's right, CENTS. He said on a good day he'll make between $7 and $11. I was hit so hard by this. How could I not have seen this all these years in New York City?
As I left, Barret said, “Four of five times in a year, I get a twenty dollar bill and that's amazing!” And with a child-like awe (敬畏), he added, “I actually have a friend who even got $100 once!!!” I knew right then that I was going to give him everything I had. I didn't even count the money in my wallet. I just gave it all. It was probably more than $200. I didn't miss it. More will come and go in the future, but at that moment, I got to give someone a dream, a little hope and if only for 5 minutes, peace of mind that the world isn't a dark, cynical, selfish place. Hopefully Barret will continue to explore the space in that window of hope, and I'll continue to do everything I can to help him on his path.
66. According to the passage, we can tell_____________. A. the author is a kind-hearted person with a huge fortune B. the author thought that he would hand out all of his wealth in a short time
C. the author didn’t run across a homeless person until 8 days later D. the author felt more foolish than happy parting with a little dollar
67. Why was Francine in tears when the author came back? A. Because she could gain more money from the author.
B. Because the author promised to treat her to a big meal in the McDonald.
C. Because the author also gave Barret $1. D. Because the author was willing to lend an ear to her and have a chat with her
68. About Barret, we can NOT learn from the passage___________________. A. he hoped he could go on exploring space one day in the future
B. he looked forward to becoming lucky enough one day to be offered more dollars C. he longed for being acknowledged and was afraid of being laughed at D. he looked nearly 40 years old and adored a free lifestyle

C. My Hours on the Streets of New York. D. An Experiment on the UY Streets. 70. The underlined word “compassion” is similar to _____________ in meaning.
A. Compass. B. Sympathy C. Donation. D. Enthusiasm.
It’s impressive to introduce yourself as the CEO of a startup company, but building a business from the ground up is a huge risk. There are no guarantees and 99 percent of startups fail, reported Xinhua News Agency.
But failure isn’t all negative. Two-thirds of entrepreneurs say their first failure contributed to their ultimate success, according to a survey conducted by Global Sources. We talked to three entrepreneurs about their failed startup experiences and the lessons they learned.
Think ahead Zhang Ying, 24, a graduate of China University of *Geosciences, opened a milk tea shop early last year in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. She borrowed 60,000 yuan from her family and friends to pay for the shop’s one-year rent and redecoration. But later that year, she had to close her shop. “There were several established milk tea shops near mine, so customers rarely visited my shop,” she says. “Worse still, I had to pay staff salaries and utility bills (物业账单), which I had hardly given any thought beforehand.”
Now, Zhang is heavily indebted and works as a programmer at an Internet company in Hangzhou to pay back all the money. Starting up a business is off her list. Lesson learned: Being idealistic is a common mistake among young entrepreneurs. They should carry out thorough market research and cost calculations to make a proper business plan, says Yu Xiuhong, CEO of Bright China Foundation Limited.
Prepare for the worst
Huo Donghua’s first attempt at launching a startup business had a bitter end, but he has learned his lesson and is determined to try again.
The 23-year-old graduate of Taiyuan University set up a Taobao shop selling women’s clothes in 2011. Since he got direct supplies from a factory, the price was competitive and his clothes attracted frequent customers.
He maintained a monthly revenue of several thousand yuan until 2013 when the factory
suddenly cut supplies, leaving Huo with no option but to close his shop.
Though he didn’t lose much money, Huo still feels regret. “I should have found a more
trustworthy partner; a backup supplier at least,” he says. “Without this failure, I would never have learned the importance of making a backup plan.”
Lesson learned: Even if your business is doing well at the moment, you should think about possible problems and come up with backup plans, says Su Xia, career advisor at Qingdao Technological University.
Build the best team
Apart from external difficulties, student startups are often undermined by internal problems. Cai Yongfeng (not his real name), a 23-year-old graduate of Beijing Institute of Technology, attributes his startup failure to bad team-building.
He and his two roommates set up a mobile game studio in July 2013. After two of their games failed in the market, his two partners decided to leave.
“One went to study abroad, the other enrolled in a graduate school,” Cai says. “The three of us all studied electronic engineering in school, so none of us had any business knowledge. Now it seems understandable that our startup failed.”
Lesson learned: Recruiting the right team is one of the most crucial elements in setting up a business. Students should look beyond their own dormitory and find partners with the right expertise. If possible, they should work with people who already have startup experience, says Yao Xin, CEO of PPLive.
第二节 读写任务(共1小题,满分25分)
阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
I found that my way of learning English that I formed from middle school still works today.
As a non-English major, I like to set aside a certain period of time for English learning every day, usually an hour or at least half an hour. I utilize this precious time by listening to tapes and
imitating their content and then reciting the short passages I like. To be frank, “Crazy English” has always been my favorite. This is definitely not intended to flatter. Instead of dividing my attention between too many materials, I’d rather concentrate on one particular resource at a time such as CE, not only because of its abundant content and native English, but also because of the benefits it has brought to me through intensive reading, listening and reciting, I believe that studying English by using these intensive methods will help you to get twice the result with half the effort.
