In an effort to produce the largest, fastest, and most luxurious ship, the British built the Titanic. It was so superior to anything else on the seas that it was called “unsinkable”. So sure of this were the owners that they provided lifeboats for only 950 of its possible 3500 passengers.

Many passengers were aboard the night it hit an iceberg, only two days at sea and more than half way between England New York destinations. Because the luxury liner was traveling so fast, it was impossible to avoid the ghostly-looking iceberg. An unextinguished fire also contributed to the ship sinking. Being frightened, people jumped into the icy water or fought to be among the few to board the lifeboats. Four hors after the unfortunate accident, another ship, the Carpathia, rescued the survivors—less than a third of those originally aboard.

The infamous Titanic enjoyed only two days of sailing glory on its maiden voyage in 1912 before plunging into 12,000 feet of water near the coast of Newfoundland, where it lies today.

today, supply is usually greater than demand. There is great competition between different manufacturers of the same kind of product to persuade customers to buy their own particular brand. They always have to remind the customer of the name and the qualities of their products. They do this by advertising. The manufacturer advertises in the newspapers and on posters. He sometimes pays for songs about his product in commercial radio programmes. He employs attractive salesgirls to distribute samples of it. He organizes competitions, with prizes for the winners. He often advertises on the screens of local cinemas. Most important of all, in countries that have television he has advertisements put into programmes that will accept them. Do you remember a time when people were a little nicer, a little softer with each other? I certainly do, and I feel that much of the world has got away from that. I see such a difference in New York City, for example, from when I first moved here more than 20 years ago: people rushing into lifts without giving those inside a chance to get off first, never saying “thank you” when others hold a door open for them, or please when they want a classmate to hand them something. We get lazy, and we think that something like a simple “thank you” doesn't really matter. But in fact it can matter much. It is that no matter how nicely we dress, how beautifully we decorate our homes, or how lovely our dinner parties are, we can’t be really stylish(漂亮的) without good manners(举止).

In fact, I think of good manners as a kind of hidden beauty secret. Haven’t you noticed that the kindest, most generous people seem to keep getting more beautiful?

Tokyo(东京)is one of the most confusing cities in the world. Over 20 million people live and work in the Tokyo area, and many world famous companies have their offices there. But most streets don’t have names. So how can you find your way in Tokyo?

Most people in Tokyo are very good at giving directions. They can usually explain how to get to their home or their office from the nearest train station. People in Tokyo often use maps when they give directions. Advertisements in newspapers or magazines, for example, usually have a small map to help you find the company. If you’re going to visit someone’s house, it’s a good idea to ask the person to draw, or fax you, a map of the local area. If you get lost, the best idea is to go to a police station.
