四、阅读理解(22分,每小题2分)

A

Have you ever been sad because of failure? Please remember, for often, achieving what you set out to do is not the most important thing.

A boy decided to dig a deep hole behind his house. As he was working, a couple of older boys stopped by to watch. “What are you doing?” asked one of the visitors. “I want to dig a hole all the way through the earth!” the boy answered excitedly. The older boys began to laugh, telling him that digging a hole all the way through the earth was impossible. After a while, the boy picked up a jar. He showed it to the visitors. It was full of all kinds of stones and insects. Then he said calmly and confidently, “Maybe I can’t finish digging all the way through the earth, but look at what I’ve found during this period!”

The boy’s goal was far too difficult, but it did cause him to go on. And that is what a goal is for — to cause us to move in the direction we have chosen, in other words, to cause us to keep working!

Not every goal will be fully achieved. Not every job will end up with a success. Not every dream will come true. But when you fall short of your aim, maybe you can say, “Yes, but look what I’ve found along the way! There are so many wonderful things having come into my life because I tried to do something!” It is in the digging that life is lived. 56. Why did the boy show the jar to the older boys? A. To drive them away.

B.To show what he had found in digging. D.To attract them to join him in the work. B.All work will end successfully. D.Goals will make us work harder.

B.A Boy Dug a Hole

D.Failure Is the Mother of Success

C.To show how beautiful the jar was. A. No dream can come true.

58. What can be learnt from the last paragraph of the text? C. Goals shouldn't be set too high

A. Joy in the Journey C.No Pains, No Gains

59. The best title for the text should be _____________.

This is an open letter to the three people who stole my handbag from the department store where I am employed as a shop assistant.

When you took my bag, I don’t know what you thought you were going to get. With my wages, there's not much left on a Tuesday. I hope the £5 was useful to you. If you really need a couple of pounds, I suppose you could always cash one of the two checks left in my check book. Of course, I phoned the bank right away and the check-cashing card is no longer valid, so it won’t be of much use to you.

Actually I don’t care about the money too much. We single parents who work to support our families understand only too well what it means to be short of cash. However, I don’t suppose it went very far among the three of you. Sorry about that!

I wish you had left the bag behind and just taken the wallet and check book. There were all kinds of papers and notes that I really need. I really think that was very inconsiderate of you. I mean, how would you like something like that to happen to you?

Well, perhaps the bag will turn up. It wasn’t even an expensive one, just a plain, old brown leather shoulder bag. You probably threw it in the nearest rubbish bin or threw it into the bushes. We've looked around, of course, but no one saw which way you went after you left the shop.

I'm not really angry with you. I know how the pressures of modern life can affect us, but I am sad at the loss of my personal things. I feel helpless. The police were very icy, and they just shrugged their shoulders. “It happens all the time,” they told me. Some small comfort, I suppose. But I’ve lost just a little more faith in human nature. And as my young son said when I told him what had happened, “Why? Mummy, why us?” I couldn't answer that question. I wonder if you can.

59. In writing Paragraph 2, the writer wants to . A. describe the contents of the bag in detail

B.tell the thieves hardly any money was available D.give some suggestions to the three thieves B.The handbag itself. D.The check book in the bag. B.They think the case quite common. D.They are unable to find the thieves.

B.To express her affection for her valuable bag. D.To complain about the fall of morality.

C.state the fact that she was careless with the money A. The cash in her bag.

60. Which of the following is the most valuable to the writer? C.The papers and notes in the bag.

61. What can we conclude about the police? A. They have doubts about human nature. C. They show sympathy to the woman. 62. Why does the author write the letter? A.To give the thieves a serious warning. C.To call people’s attention to their belongings.

Death Valley, one of America’s great national parks, is a place of strange and silent beauty. As beautiful as this place is, its name provides evidence of very real danger. Death Valley is a land of beautiful yet dangerous extremes. There are mountains that reach more than 3,000 meters into the sky. There is a place called Badwater that is the lowest area of land in the Western Hemisphere. If there were water there, it would be 86 meters below the level of the ocean.

Death Valley can be dangerously cold during the winter months. Storms in the mountains can produce sudden flooding on the floor of the Valley. The air temperature during the summer has been as high as 57℃. The sun can heat the ground so that the temperature of the rocks and soil can be as high as 74℃. The extreme heat of Death Valley has killed people in the past. It will continue to kill those who do not honor this extreme climate. Death Valley does not forgive those who are not careful.

Death Valley is a good example of the violence of nature. It contains evidence of several ancient volcanoes that caused huge explosions. Evidence of one of these explosions is called Ubehebe Crater. The explosion left a huge hole in the ground almost a kilometer and a half wide.

In many areas of Death Valley it is easy to see where the ground has been pushed up violently by movement deep
