第二部分:阅读理解(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项。

“For university I have to get a summer job.” I heard a secondary-school student telling his friend.“But it won’t be a factory job. What would I learn from a factory job?”

I’d like to tell him about the lessons I learned from a factory job the summer before my last year in secondary school, many years ago. On my first day on the job, in a paint factory, the plant manager said to me, “I need another pair of sky hooks. Would you go into the next department and get some?”Off I went. There was no sky hook in that department. I was sent to another one, then another. I ended up visiting every department in the factory. When I returned empty-handed, I was told with much laughter there was no such thing as a sky hook. This is the way the factory used to get to know a new hire. Learning the social skill of accepting good-natured hazing(捉弄) was my first lesson.

Before working inside the paint factory, a new hire had to scrape (刮去) and paint the outside of the building. After working in the hot sun, I returned home with tired hands, and I learned to respect the honest factory worker, man or woman. When I started painting the next day, I was not sure how to do it because of my experience. The managers knew that. When I finished the first side of the wall, all the nearby workers came out and cheered for me. The memory of that day is still with me. I learned that the fruit that we getfrom honest labor is one of the sweetest of all pleasures.

On certain days, when the ship came, six workers were picked to unload 50-pound bags of paint ingredients. We started at 7 a.m., and when we finished we could go home. If everyone worked hard, the afternoon was free time. It was a great management tool. I learned it is possible to make a difficult task into a good exercise in teamwork.

I learned so much that summer. I hope the secondary-school student would not refuse a factory job if he is offered one.

B.it is valuable to work in a factory D. factory people are very kind and honest

C. the secondary-school student was foolish A. came back with some sky hooks

62. The manager who sent the writer to get sky hooks would be satisfied if the writer _______. C. realized it was a joke and did not get angry

63. After the writer did the unloading with five other workers he thought _______. A. the factory could have sent only three workers for the job B. unloading heavy bags was a good exercise for him C. it was clever of the manager to make them work as a team D. good tools were important even for unloading work 64. The writer learned from his time in the factory that _______? A.no job is easy in the world

B

The year of 2014 has been jam-packed with the good, the bad, and the ugly. But no matter what has happened, smart people have always been busy inventing. Here are some of the inventions of 2014 that have helped to make the world better, smarter, and even a little more fun. Selfie stick

If 2013 was the year of the selfie, then this year was the year of the selfie stick. Wherever you go in the world, you’re likely to see them being used by everyone from backpackers and groups of friends to skiers on a mountain.

Selfie sticks come in many different shapes and sizes and can hold your camera, or smartphone, at a distance to help you find better photo angles and take better group photos.

Most selfie sticks use a handheld bluetooth button, which allows the photo to be taken when you’re ready. Companies have jumped on the trend and made many different types of selfie sticks, such as hairbrushes that can hold your phone and the classic extendable (可拉伸的) selfie sticks that “add genuine value” to picture taking, according to mobile analyst Van Baker. Wireless electricity

Most of us could not bear to live without wireless Internet. We use it every day from our phones to our cars. But one company wants to go a step further, by making electricity wireless.

No more tangled wires, and no more having to sit holding your cell phone near a power socket (插座) in the corner of the room. WiTricity, a company in the US, has invented technology that can power objects up to 2.4 meters away. It uses a special plug-in coil (线圈) that creates a magnetic field (磁场). B. honest labor can be a real pleasure C. workers should respect one another

D. a successful factory depends on a good management

‘Super banana’

Australian biogeneticist James Dale visited Uganda, a poor African country, in the early 2000s. He noticed that in Sub-Saharan Africa, 15-30 percent of children under 5 were at risk of going blind because of a lack in Vitamin A intake. Dale also learned that people there often grow bananas, and eat 3 to 11 bananas a day. However, the type of bananas grown there are low in vitamins, so he came up with an idea: planting bananas with added nutrition to improve Ugandan people’s health.

With the help of Bill Gates’ foundation, Dale developed the “super banana”. He added a gene to the fruit, making it rich in Vitamin A. In June, super bananas began human trials in the US. 3-D printing

It is a rare thing for an invention to be able to affect everything we do in our daily lives. But 3-D printing is one of those rare inventions.

This year has finally seen 3-D printers being used in a wide range of industries for the first time. By using a digital blueprint, a kind of coded instruction manual (手册), 3-D printers can print anything you tell them to with many different materials.

This year we have seen 3-D printed human tissue, toys, guns, and even pizza. This is the year in which the 3-D printer has revolutionized the way we produce things.

Once, two phoenix birds flew over a small village in Hunan province. The village was so beautiful that the birds never wanted to leave. This legend (传说) was recited to me during my visit to Fenghuang, adding a mythical (神秘的) touch to this ancient town.

Fenghuang is a snapshot (快照) of idyllic (田园诗般的) village life in rural China. Set alongside the banks of the Tuojiang River, Fenghuang is full of small, winding alleys and surrounded by lush, green hills. Having travelled directly from the bustling city of Changsha, Fenghuang was a breath of fresh air.

When I visited Fenghuang, it was July. My friend and I excitedly explored, walking along the ancient city
