I LOVE FOOTBALL. I started playing when I was nine years old, and football got me through. It helped make me who I am today. And even though I did not reach the National Football League, I sometimes think I got more from pursuing(追逐) that dream, and not realizing it.
My romance with football started when my dad dragged me, kicking and screaming, to join a league. I had no desire to be there. I was naturally weak and the smallest kid by far. Fear turned to awe(敬畏) when I met my coach, Jim Graham, a huge, six-foot-four wall-of-a-guy. And he is really strict and old-school.
Coach Graham used to ride me hard. I remember one practice in particular. “You’re doing it all wrong, Pausch. Go back! Do it again!” I tried to do what
B. over 16 years old D. between 8-12 years old
he wanted. It wasn’t enough. “You owe me, Pausch! You’re doing push-ups after practice.”
When I was finally dismissed(解散), one of the assistant coaches came up to me. “Coach Graham rode you pretty hard, didn’t he?” he said. “Yeah.”
“That’s a good thing,” the assistant told me. “When you’re doing bad and nobody says anything to you anymore, that means they’ve given up on you.”
That conversation has stuck with me my whole life. When you see yourself doing something badly and nobody’s willing to tell you anymore, that’s a bad place to be. You may not want to hear it, but your critics(批评者) are often the ones telling you they still love you and care about you, and want to make you better.
There’s a lot of talk these days about giving children self-esteem(自尊). It’s not something you can give; it’s something they have to build. Coach Graham knew there was really only one way to teach kids how to develop it: You give them something they can’t do, they work hard until they find they can do it, and you just keep repeating the process.
When Coach Graham first got hold of me, I was this weak kid with no skills and no physical strength. But he made me realize that if I work hard enough, there will be things I can do tomorrow that I can’t do today. Even now, having just turned forty-seven, I can give you a three-point stance that any NFL lineman would be proud of. I really felt grateful to Coach Graham for what he had done to me, though it surely did feel good at that time to do so many push-ups after practice. 24. Which words can best describe Coach Graham?
A. Strict and mean. B. Big and proud. C. Strict and wise. D. Careful and strong.
25. The author believes that those who criticize you actually ______. A. make fun of you C. think ill of you
B. give you up
D. encourage you to do better
26. The author was grateful to Graham because the coach ______. A. made him a member of NFL
B. made him do lots of push-ups
C. taught him the value of hard work playing football
D. taught him the importance of
27. What lesson can we learn from this passage? A. No pains, no gains.
B. Never offer to teach fish to swim.
D. Where there is a will, there is
C. Behind bad luck comes good luck. a way.

Thousands of primary schools in England are to be offered the chance to follow an Asian style of teaching math.
The government is providing £41million of funding to help interested schools to take this method, which is used in high performing places like Shanghai, Singapore and Hong Kong. The money will be given to more than 8,000 primary schools in England. This approach to math is already used in some schools, but the cash means it can be taken up more widely.
The Department for Education says the mastery approach to math teaching, as is known, involves children being taught as a whole class and is supported by the use of high-quality textbooks. Pupils are encouraged to find physical symbols for mathematical concepts, so objects and pictures are used to describe and show abstract(抽象的) ideas. There is a focus on whole-class interactive(互动的) teaching at a quick pace, rather than teacher explanation followed by slower individual(个体的) group practice, and textbooks, rather than worksheets, are used. The mastery approach sees the whole class progressing together, with higher achievers being encouraged to deepen their understanding, rather than going faster ahead of classmates.
So far 140 teachers from primary schools in England have been trained by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics to help schools take the approach. Schools Minister Nick Gibb said: \are seeing a new interest in math teaching in this country, with good ideas from around the world helping to enliven our classrooms. I am confident that the steps we are taking now will ensure young people are properly prepared for further study and the 21st Century workplace and
that the too often heard phrase 'can't do math' belongs to the past.\
Russell Hobby, general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers, said: \for the more effective teaching of math is always welcome, especially when it is not forced on schools.” The success of such a programme will also depend on enough numbers of well trained and well devoted teachers to deliver it. The government must put far more effort into recruiting(招聘) and keeping teachers.\28. What difference will £41million funding make to the primary schools in England? A. More than 8,000 schools will be built.
B. Interested schools can have more money to enlarge themselves. C. More schools can benefit from the Asian style of teaching math. D. Some schools will visit China to learn methods of teaching there.
29. What’s the characteristic(特点) of “the mastery approach to math teaching”? A. That worksheets are widely used.
B. That it values the progress of the whole class.
C. That individual group practice makes up the entire class. D. That pupils are encouraged to interact among themselves. 30. What can we infer from Nick Gibb’s words? A. English students do not like math at all. B. Math teaching in England is not taken seriously.
C. Finding a job is extremely difficult for young people in England. D. The new approach will help improve the ability of students in England. 31. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. More English teachers are being trained abroad. B. An Asian math method is offered to schools in England. C. Many English students benefit from Chinese teaching style. D. The English government starts a reform in primary schools.

Study Every Day
It’s important to study English every day. However, don’t exaggerate(夸张)! Study for thirty minutes every day instead of two hours once a week. 37
A Little Grammar, A Little Listening, A Little Reading, and A little Writing

39
Give yourself one grammar goal when reading a new article or watching a new video. For example, try to write down each example of a form you are studying such as the present perfect. Use highlighters (colored pens) with texts to highlight forms that you are studying.
Use Different Learning Methods
Don’t just use one way to study English. Use a variety of methods which will make all the parts of your brain help you. 40 All of these methods together help to reinforce(强化) your learning.
Find Some Friends
You can practice the exercises together, have conversations together ( in English! ), and, as you study English together, help each other with exercises you may not understand.
