“Mum, what does it mean when someone tells you that they have a skeleton(骨骼)in the closet(衣橱)?” Jessica asked. “A skeleton in the closet?” her mother paused thoughtfully. “Well, it’s som ething that you would rather not have anyone else know about. For example, if in the past, someone in Dad’s family had been arrested for stealing a horse, it would be ‘a skeleton in his family’s closet’. He really wouldn’t want any neighbor to know about it.”

“Why pick on my family?” Jessica’s father said with anger. “Your family history isn’t so good, you know. Wasn’t your great-great-grandfather a prisoner who was transported to Australia for his crimes?” “Yes, but people these days say that you are not a real Australian unless your ancestors arrived as prisoners.” “Gosh, sorry I asked. I think I understand now,” Jessica cut in before things grew worse.

After dinner, the house was very quiet. Jessica’s parents were still quite angry with each other. Her mother was ironing clothes and every now and then she glared at her husband, who hid behind his newspaper pretending to read. When she

finished, she gathered the freshly pressed clothes in her arms and walked to Jessica’s closet. Just as she opened the door and reached in to hang a skirt, a bony arm stuck out from the dark depths and a bundle of white bones fell to the floor. Jessica’s mother sank in a faint(晕倒), waking only when Jessica put a cold, wet cloth on her forehead. She looked up to see the worried faces of her husband and daughter.

“What happened? Where am I?” she asked. “You just destroyed the school’s skeleton, Mum,” explained Jessica. “I brought it home to help me with my health project. I meant to tell you, but it seemed that as soon as I mentioned skeletons and closets, it caused a problem between you and Dad.” Jessica looked in amazement as her parents began to laugh madly. “They’re both crazy,” she thought.

Howling(吼叫) is a behavior commonly observed among a wolf pack(狼群). As pack animals, wolves work together to hunt and rely on howling as an important means of communication among each other. There’re different explanations of a wolf’s howl and it appears that there may be more to discover.

One theory is that wolves howl to bond better together. It’s almost as if howling together helps the pack stay together. Perhaps something similar to people feeling a sense of involvement with each other when singing a song together. But this theory may be wrong, explains Fred H. Harrington, a professor who studies wolf behavior.

Indeed, there have been times when wolves have been seen one moment howling in a chorus(合唱), and the next, quarreling among each other. It appears that usually the lowest-ranking members of the pack may actually be “punished” for joining in the chorus at times. So is howling a way to strengthen a social bond or just a way to reconfirm status (地位) among its members? Why do wolves howl for sure?

What is clear, however, is that howling is often used among packmates to locate each other. Hunting grounds are distant and it happens that wolves may separate

from one another at times. When this happens, howling appears to be an excellent means of gathering.

Howling, interestingly, is a contagious behavior. When one wolf starts to howl, very likely others will follow. This is often seen to occur in the morning, as if wolves were doing some sort of “roll call” where wolves all howl together to report their presence.

63. What is the possible similarity between wolves’ howling together and human’s singing in chorus?

A. The act of calling each other.

B. The sense of accomplishment.

C. The act of hunting for something.

D. The sense of belonging to a group.

64. Wh y does Harrington think the “social bond” theory may be wrong?

A. Wolves separate from each other after howling.

B. Wolves tend to protect their hunting grounds.

C. Wolves sometimes have quarrels after howling together.

D. Wolves of low rank are encouraged to join in the chorus.

65. Researchers are sure that wolves often howl to______.

A. show their ranks

B. find their companions

C. report the missing ones

D. express their loneliness

66. “Howling… is a contagious behaviour”(in the last paragraph)means_______.

A. howling is a signal for hunting

B. howling is a way of communication

C. howling often occurs in the morning

D. howling spreads from one to another

D

In the summer of 1978 an English farmer was driving his tractor through a field of wheat when he discovered that some of his wheat was lying flat on the ground. The fattened (压平的) wheat formed a circle about six meters across. Around this circle were four smaller circles of flattened wheat. The five circles were in a formation like five dots. During the following years, farmers in England found the strange circles in their fields more and more often.

The circles are called “crop circles” because they appear in the fields of grain - usually wheat or corn. The grain in the circles lies flat on the ground but never broken; it continues to grow, and farmers can later harvest it. Farmers always discover the crop circles in the morning, so the circles probably form at night. They appear only in the months from May to September.

At first, people thought that the circles were a hoax. Probably young people were making them as a joke, or farmers were making them to attract tourists. To prove that the circles were a hoax, people tried to make circles exactly like the ones th at farmer had found. They couldn’t do it. They couldn’t enter a field of grain without leaving tracks(痕迹), and they couldn’t flatten the grain without breaking it.

Many people believe that beings from outer space are making the circle to communicate with us from far away and that the crop circles are messages from them.

Scientists who have studied the crop circles suggested several possibilities. Some scientists say that a downward rush of wind leads to the formation of the circles - the same downward rush of air that sometimes causes an airplane to crash. Other scientists say that forces within the earth cause the circles to appear. There is one problem with all these scientific explanations: crop circles often appear in formations, like the five-dot formation. It is hard to believe that any natural force could form those.

67.In the summer of 1978, an English farmer discovered in his field that __________.

A. some of his wheat had been damaged

B. his grain was growing up

in circles.

C. his grain was moved into several circles

D. some of his wheat had

fallen onto the ground.

68.According to the text, the underlined part “hoax” (in the 3rd paragraph)

probably means __________.

A. an attempt made to fool people

B. a special way to plant

crops

C. a research on the force of winds

D. an experiment for the

protection of crops.

69.Which of the following may prove that the crop circles are not made by man?

A. The farmer couldn’t step out of the field.

B. The farmers couldn’t make th e circles round.

C. The farmers couldn’t leave without footprints.

D. The farmers couldn’t keep the wheat straight up.

70.A proper title for this passage is ___________.

A. An Unsolved Mystery

B. Strange Flying Objects

C. The Power of Natural Forces

D. The discovery of Strange Circles

Autumn blues? Let the sunshine in.

Falling leaves, whithering flowers, cold winds, faint sunshine. 71 Spirits can be low.

People who suffer from “the autumn blues”often are extremely exhausted, lack energy, need more sleep, feel increased appetite and gain weight.

“The exact cause of this condition, often called seasonal depression or seasonal affective disorder (SAD), is not known yet,” says Chen Jue, associate professor at Shanghai Mental Health Center. “But recent studies indicate that weather change is influential and strongly suggest that this condition is caused by changes in the availability of sunlight.”

One theory is that with decreased exposure to sunlight, the biological clock that regulates(调节) mood, sleep, and hormones is delayed, running more slowly in winter. 72 Another theory is that brain chemicals that transmit information between nerves may be altered(改变) in individuals with SAD. It is believed that exposure to light can correct these imbalances.

“ 73 Remember, spring always lives in your heart.” Chen says.

Here are some tips to deal with autumn depression.

1.Go outdoors and get some sunlight. More around. Fresh air and exercise

improve the respiratory( 呼吸) system and blood circulation and regulate

the nerves system. Thus, exercise is calming and relieving one’s mood.

2.Relax at work. Stretch, breathe deeply. Take a tea break. Think of your

next vacation.

3. 74 Chocolate and sugar raise the spirits.

4. Look at bright colors, such as red and orange.

5. 75 Blooming plants are cheering

6.Call friends or family when you feel lonely or depressed. Recall some

happy memories.

A.Exposure to light may reset the biological clock.

B.Decorate your room and work space with flowers.

C.It is a sad season, but you can try to make it happy.

D.That is the way you can use to lighten yourself.

E.Keep a chocolate bar in your pocket.

F.For many people, late autumn can be a season of gloom and depression.

G.Autumn always gives us a beautiful scene.

W: Uh huh. What's the name and address of the sender?

M: Who—Oh me, I'm Paul Castle, that's C-A-S-T-L-E. I live at 77Sydney Road, Sheffield, 58.

W: And who was it addressed to?

M: My mother, Mrs. J Castle. She lives at 128 Devon Street.

W: Good. Now, urn, what exactly was in the parcel?

M: Welt, it was her birthday last week, and I, um, made her a cake, um, a chocolate one.

W: I see. OK, I’ll see if we've go t here.

W: Well, honey, which one do you prefer? Number 4 Candy Street or Number 6 Station Road?

M: Well, it’s difficult --- they’re both very nice and they’ve both got the four bedrooms we need. Station Road is close to town so it would be very convenient for work and shopping. But Candy Street is much quieter because it is much further out.

W: Well, we could get to town easily though.

M: That’s true. One thing that worries me about Station Road is that it hasn’t got a garage. And then there are the gardens: the one at Station Road is tiny but the one at Candy Street is huge. Could we keep it looking good?

W: Yes, of course, it would be hard work but I love that garden and I think it is a much nicer house.

M: You’re right --- and four is my lucky number.

W: OK. Let’s give them a call. I want to move in as soon as possible.

M: Amy. So, how are you doing?

W: Oh, hi Sam. School is so crazy these days, and when I’m not at school, I’m at work.

M: Hey, listen. I’m getting together with Sara and Paul toni ght, and a few of our other friends are going to join us. And, we're going out to eat and then watch

a movie. Why not come with us?

W: I'd love to, but I have to study for a test tomorrow.

M: Ah, come on. We're planning on having dinner around 6:30 and then seeing a movie at 7:30. We should be home by 10:30 . . . 11:30 at the latest.

W: I . . . I don't think I can go. I haven't been feeling well lately.

M: Yeah, because you study too much. Well, we'll have a fun time. And it’s Sara’s birthday, too. And we’ll have a small birthday party after the movie. Come on. Best friends always stick together.

W: Oh. Okay.

M: Great. I’ll pick you up about 6:00.

W: Okay. See you then, but I have to be back by 10:30.

M: Ah, 10:30 . . . Midnight. It's all the same. See you at 6:00.

W: Well, let’s see, oh I know. Why don’t we go dancing for a change? We haven’t done that for a long time.

M: Well, tell you the truth, I don’t really feel like it tonight. I had a pretty hard day, and I’m sort of tired.

W: Hmm, well, in that case, we could go to the movies.

M: Oh we always go to the movies, can’t we do something different?

W: Well, do you have any suggestions?

M: Let’s see, how do you feel about playing bridge?

W: It’s ok with me, but we don’t have any beer and th ings.

M: Well, why don’t you call Janet and then ask her and Tom to come over. And I will go to the store to buy some drinks.

W: Ok. ………Hello, Janet, it’s me. Oh, fine, just fine. Say, Janet, I was wondering if you and Tom were doing anything tonight. No? Well would you like to come by our place and play a few hands of bridge? You would. Oh that’s great. Well, shall we say around 8:00? Uh huh, yeah, that’s really great. We’ve got everything here. That’s right, just bring yourselves. Um, ok, fine. See you later then. Bye.

Ah, nothing like good old rhythm and blues to relax the soul this late Wednesday night. This is Harry Williams, and I'll be with you throughout the night here with KQ1150. Oh, and don't forget that I'll be giving away tickets on the hour from now until sunrise for those of you who can identify this song: Call me at 693-3019 and be the seventh caller. And if you can tell me the name of the piece and the year it was recorded, you'll enjoy the songs of one of the best bands for a week from this Saturday night downtown at the Silver Palace.

Now sit back, relax, and enjoy listening to KQ1150.
