Passage 1
The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we’ve never been before.
But just as in face to face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line. 36 Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes.
For anything you’re about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person’s face?” If the answer is no, rewrite and reread. 37 .
If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so.38 If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.
39 Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it’s a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn’t give you license to correct everyone else. 40 At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended. It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don’t ask such questions.
A. It’s natural that there some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online.
B. Repeat the process till you feel sure that you’d feel comfortable saying the words to the person’s face. C. Everyone was new to the network once.
D. The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated. E. When you send short messages to a person online, you must say something beautiful to hear. F. You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages. G. If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely.
Passage 2
We are humans, and we all make mistakes. The mistakes that we make are not usually on purpose, whether it is breaking a vase,or not completing a task. 71 This article will provide you with ideas as to what to do once a mistake has been made.
Admit that you make a mistake as soon as you discover it. Delaying it longer will only make you feel worse,
1
or may drive you toward making the wrong decision to try and cover it up.
72 Do not play the“blame game\.Most people are smart enough to realize that this is just a poor attempt to protect yourself. Perhaps you gave a task to another person and it was never completed. But is it really the entire fault of the person you gave the task to or is it partially your fault for not following up? Keep this in mind before placing the blame on someone else.
73 Maybe you broke your mother's favorite vase,or even forgot a friend's birthday. Just an apology can sometimes be viewed as a“quick fix\,and apologizing and asking to be forgiven gives the person opportunity to forgive you.
Offer some compensation(补偿)for loss, damage,or injury caused. 74 By doing this,it may soften the blow to the person we've disappointed.
Learn from your mistakes. In the case of a job or a task, write a“to-do\meeting. As for forgetting a birthday, put the birthday on an electronic calendar for next year.
Do better next time. 75We should try to understand what happened and try to make sure that it won't happen again.
A. Take responsibility. B. Never repeat your mistakes. C. Apologize and ask for forgiveness. D. People’s faith in us can reduce quickly.
E. So sometimes it is necessary to write a letter to say sorry. F. But not everyone knows how to admit making a mistake. G. Offer to immediately complete the late task or pay for the vase.
Passage 3
Five tips to help you stop smoking
16.
Make a promise, set a date and stick to it. Don’t be put off by a wedding, party or other time when you normally smoke. 17.
Is your after-dinner cigarette your favorite? A new American study has showed that some foods including meat make cigarettes more satisfying. Others including cheese, fruit and vegetables make cigarettes taste terrible. So swap your usual steak or burger for a veggie pizza instead. 18. The same study looked at drinks. Fizzy(泡沫腾涌的)drinks, alcohol, cola, tea and coffee all make cigarettes taste better. So when you’re out, drink more water and juice. Some people find that simply changing their drink (for example, switching from wine to a vodka and tomato juice ) affects their need to reach for a cigarette.

Passage 5
Many schools require yearly parent-teacher conferences for all students. 16 The list below is to help teachers prepare themselves for these often difficult conferences. 17 When you have students who are struggling in either their academics or their behaviour, you should communicate with their parents using notes or phone calls.
Come to the conference well-prepared. If the students are having a hard time with their work, show the parents their grades and samples of their work. 18 If the student is misbehaving, then you should make detailed notes of their behaviour before the conference. Bring these notes to the conference so that parents can understand how their children are behaving.
19 For example, you might say something about their creativity, their handwriting, their sense of humour, or make some other comment. Instead of restating the problems you have already discussed, end with a comment that offers hope for the future. You could say something like, “Thanks for meeting with me today. I know that working together we can help Johnny succeed.” Some teachers may have to deal with an angry parent at some point. 20 Much anger can be avoided if the parents are informed. Don’t get excited yourself and make sure you avoid shouting.
A. Communicating with parents before a conference is necessary.
B. Try to think of something nice to say about the students that have problems. C. At the end of the conference, you should make a conclusion.
D. A parent-teacher conference can have a huge impact on a student’s work and behaviour. E. Remember to thank the parents for coming to the conference and working with you. F. Remember that the best way to solve this is to keep parents informed every step of the way.
G. It is easier for parents to understand the problem if they can actually see examples of their children’s work.
