Title: When less is more

Teaching time: One period (45 minutes) Teaching aims:

1. To train the students’ reading ability by fast reading and careful reading; 2. To make the students understand the text;

3. To make the students realize the importance of “five yuan” and guide the students to use their money to do some meaningful things.

Teaching key points:

1. To help the students understand the text;

2. To help the students get the important information.

Teaching difficult points:

1. To use scanning skill to get important information;

2. To guide the students to use money in a meaningful way.

Teaching methods:

1. Fast reading and careful reading; 2. Task-based teaching; 3. Discussion.

Teaching tool: Multi-media device;Blackboard; Chalks; Textbook. Teaching procedures:

Step1 Greetings and Lead-in Greet the whole class as usual.

Present some sayings about money on the flash. 1. Money talks.

2. Money makes the mare go. 3. Money is the root of all evil. 4. Money is round and rolls away. 5. Money does not grow on the tree.

Ask the students the following questions: 1. Do you have pocket money?

2. How do you use your pocket money? Students answer questions.

T: Next let’s come to the text to learn something about the author’s opinion about five yuan.

Step 2 Fast reading

Before reading, present some reading strategies. a. Read the whole text to get the general idea.

b. Pay attention to the first sentence of each paragraph as it is often introduces the main idea.

c. Look at the list of topics and match them with the paragraphs.

Task1 Read the text and match the topics with each paragraph.

a. Everybody plays an important part in stopping Yellow River erosion. b. The success of a tree-planting programme in Inner Mongolia. c. It is a huge job to control Yellow River erosion.

d. The erosion of sand is the main cause of Yellow River erosion. e. What’s the usage of five yuan?

Step 3 Careful reading

Before reading, give students some reading strategies. a. Read the questions pay attention to the key words. b. Search for information and select information.

Read the text carefully and finish task 2 and task 3.
