In today's Internet age, the demand for online games continues to grow. Online computer game centers exist in many cities and towns throughout Asia. Facing the pressures of school and life, people tend to the virtual world, expecting a diversion from these problems. Too often, however, they can lead to problems and unhealthy addictions.

This is most clearly seen in the example of South Korea. The country has the world's highest percentage of high-speed Internet services. It also has a high number

of online game players and related problems. It was once reported that a young man collapsed (突然晕倒) and died while playing online games. He had been playing almost nonstop for 86 hours at an Internet cafe. Another young man killed his sister after becoming confused between the online world and real life. A 12-year-old boy

stole US $ 16000 from his father and ran away from home. He did this to continue his obsession (着迷) with online game. Such problems, however, don't just happen in South Korea. They are spreading to other parts of Asia, as well.

What kinds of people develop online game addiction? What does the problem

2

look like? Dr Suhui Chen, a clinical psychologist, researches Internet addiction. She discovered some signs of at-risk individuals such as lack friendship and good social

skills. Those problem individuals feel it so compulsive to play online games that they could sacrifice things such as school and family. They feel the need to spend more and more time online. And they become upset if anyone tries to limit their online game playing.

How many problem game players are there? In mainland China, the potential number of problem online gamers is alarming. Just in 2004, China has had 13.8 million online game players according to China Daily. Furthermore, it stated that 80 percent of these were under 25 and had signs of addiction. Such numbers point toward a growing problem among Chinese youth.

Make sure to keep control over your online game playing. If you don't control it, it can get control of you.

Many cities have subways and underground public transportation to take locals and tourists alike rapidly around the city. However, there’s something different about riding a London subway. It may not look different, but the historical value of one of England’s most popular forms of transportation is enough to make riding the subway a must when visiting London. With a little under 300 different stations, the subway

3

can take you almost anywhere you need to go.

Riding a London subway, a person from other countries will notice one major difference: in London, people do not look at each other. In fact, eye contact is avoided at all times. That’s not rudeness ― people are just too busy to bother looking.

Busy doing what, you ask? Well, they’re certainly not using the time for a moment of quiet thinking.Nor are they reading a book.New technology has replaced quiet habits.Today the only acceptable form of book on the London underground is an e-book.

Apple must earn a fortune from London commuters(使用月票上下班者).Since the launch of the iPhone in 2007, over 40,000―yes, that’s 40,000 “apps” have been designed.

Commuters love them because they are the perfect time-fillers.One ―app‖, called iShoot, is a game that features tanks.Another one, Tube Exits, tells passengers where to sit on the train to be the closest to the exit of their destination.iSteam clouds the iPhone screen when you breathe into the microphone. You can then write in the ―steam‖ on your phone screen.

For those without an iPhone, another Apple product, the iPod, may be the distraction(消遣)of choice. It’s not just teenagers who “plug in” to their music-iPods are a popular way to pass the time for all ages.

And if games, e-books and music aren’t enough to keep you occupied, then perhaps you would prefer a film? The development of palm DVD technology means many commuters watch their favorite TV shows or films on the way to work. With all these distractions, it’s amazing that people still remember to get off the train.

31.Those who want to save time to reach where they go can download ______ to

their iPhones. A.iShoot B.Tube Exits C.iSteam D.iPod 32.People in London do not make eye contact on the subway because ______. A.they are going to work and have no time to communicate with each other B.they love reading books and do not want to be disturbed C.they feel sleepy because of getting up early D.they are busy playing games, reading e-books, listening to music or watching

films[来源:学|科|网Z|X|X|K]

33.The underlined word ―apps‖ in the fourth paragraph means ______. A.computers B.programs downloaded for the iPhone C.computer companies D.fortune from London commuters 34.Which word best describes the writer’s attitude towards commuters’ behaviors? A.For. B.Against. C.Neutral . D.Hateful. 35.The main idea of the passage is that ______. A.London commuters are unfriendly to strangers B.Apple has earned a lot of money from selling 40,000 apps C.technology is changing how London commuters spend their traveling time D.riding a London subway is a must when visiting London

As a senior, my future is always on my mind. To be exact, thoughts of the future have kept me up countless nights and made me worry enough to do poorly on more than one test. Because of this, words of wisdom are a source of comfort. Steve Jobs gave a speech to Stanford’s graduating class in 2005 and his words resound repeatedly in my mind whenever I think about my future.

It wasn’t always like that, though. It started when I became a junior, when college came into view. It’s the first big step to making your life your own. So when Jobs discussed his life as a student, some fears were eased. He, too, felt the need to attend college to make something of himself. He faced what many are extremely afraid of: uncertainty. His lack of understanding caused him to stop attending college and focus on what he felt was important. His story had a happy ending, of course, since he certainly turned out well.

This doesn’t mean that students shouldn’t attend college, but rather that they shouldn’t worry so much. You’ll get where you need to go, even if your path is a bit more winding(蜿蜒的)than you’d like.

Jobs talked about the hardships in his work. His love of his work helped him carry on and he got where he was meant to be, which restates the point: don’t panic. One particular part of his speech stayed with me. Steve Jobs quoted(引用)the saying ―Stay hungry, stay foolish‖ and it has become my motto. Staying foolish is realizing that you are still a fool, no matter how much you’ve learned or experienced. There is always more to explore. Staying hungry is wanting to find those things about which you are still uneducated.

Steve Jobs’s level of success is attainable, and I aim to prove that. With the will power to go into the world living every day like it’s my last and allowing the future to take care of itself, I will do great things. In the last moments of my life, I’ll be proud of what I have done and hope to have all the wisdom a person could wish for. 36. The author felt worried when _________.

A. he had to take tests at school B. he thought about his future

C. he had lots of sleepless nights D. he searched for words of wisdom 37. It is suggested in Paragraphs 1 and 2 that _________.

A. Steve Jobs didn’t attend college B. Steve Jobs failed because of his decision C. the author is a college student D. the author cares much about his future 38. What did the author gain from Jobs’s speech?

A. Courage to drop out of school. B. Confidence in defeating Jobs. C. Interest in computer industry. D. Bravery to face uncertainties. 39. What did NOT Steve Jobs encourage students to do in his speech?

A. Have the desire to learn more. B. Be content with what they know. C. Stay calm in the face of hardships. D. Be modest so as to learn more. 40. The passage is mainly about _________.

A. the wisdom drawn from a speech B. the most impressive quote in life C. a memorable meeting with Jobs D. an experience of a speech

What will people die of in 100 years from now? If you think that is a simple question, you have not been paying attention to the revolution that is taking place in bio-technology(生物技术). With the help of new medicine, the human body will last a very long time. Death will come mainly from accidents, murder and war. Today’s leading killers, such as heart disease, cancer, and aging itself, will become distant memories.

In discussion of technological changes, the Internet gets most of the attention these days. But the change in medicine can be the real technological event of our times. How long can humans live? Human brains were known to decide the final death. Cells are the basic units of all living things, and until recently, scientists were sure that the life of cells could not go much beyond l20 years because the basic materials of cells, such as those of brain cells, would not last forever. But the upper limits will be broken by new medicine. Sometime between 2050 and 2100, medicine will have advanced to the point at which every 10 years or so, people will be able to take medicine to repair their organs. The medicine, made up of the basic building materials of life, will build new brain cells, heart cells, and so on — in much the same way our bodies make new skin cells to take the place of old ones.

It is exciting to imagine that the advance in technology may be changing the most basic condition of human existence, but many technical problems still must be cleared up on the way to this wonderful future.

41. According to the passage, human death is now mainly caused by ______ . A. diseases and aging B. accidents and war C. accidents and aging D. heart disease and war

42. In the author’s opinion, today’s most important advance in technology lies in ___. A. medicine B. the Internet C. brain cells D. human organ 43. Humans may live longer in the future because ______ . A. heart disease will be far away from us B. human brains can decide the final death C. the basic materials of cells will last forever D. human organs can be repaired by new medicine

44. How long can humans live in the future according to the passage? A. Over 100 years. B. More than 120 years. C. About 150 years. D. The passage doesn’t tell us. 45. We can learn from the passage that ______ .

A. human life will not last more than 120 years in the future B. humans have to take medicine to build new skin cells now C. much needs to be done before humans can have a longer life

D. we have already solved the technical problems in building new cells 第二节 信息匹配(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 请阅读下列应用文及相关信息,并按照要求匹配信息。

An elderly carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer his plans to leave the house building business and live a more leisurely life with his wife enjoying his extended family. The employer was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor. The carpenter said yes, but in time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He resorted to shoddy workmanship and used inferior materials. It was an unfortunate way to end his career. When the carpenter finished his work and the employer came to inspect the house and handed the front-door key to the carpenter. \is your house,\he said, \gift to you.\

What a shock! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently. Now he had to live in the home he had built none too well.

That’s all. Thank you. 第二节 读写任务 One possible version:

A carpenter decided to retire but promised to build the last house for his employer. He was absent-minded and didn’t take it seriously when he was building it. But finally his employer gave it to him as a gift, which made the carpenter regretful.

I firmly believe that self-discipline matters more than IQ or diligence for success. As the saying goes, the first and best victory is to conquer the self. Life is a continuous process of fighting and one cannot achieve success without self-discipline. The above story reminds me of an unforgettable experience during my childhood. I once took part in a summer camp and the training was really tough. At the end of the camp, everyone was so tired that they left the camp with lots of rubbish. However, I offered to stay behind to help the trainers to clean the rubbish, regardless of the extreme tiredness. To my great surprise, I was told that cleaning the rubbish was the last test of the camp! I was the only one who was announced qualified.

The experience makes a big difference to my studies and my life. I think self-discipline is surely an important factor in my achieving success in learning English. Therefore, don’t let a lack of self-discipline be an obstacle to your success.
