Bill, a thirteen-year-old boy, thought he had grown up to be a man. But his parents told him, “You won’t be a real man until you begin to think about helping others.”

One morning, his parents gave him some money to buy some milk for them. Outside a shop he saw a homeless old man who looked very sick. Bill went to him and asked, “What’s the matter with you?”

The old man answered, “ I’m hungry. I haven’t had any food for two days.”

At the thought of his parents’ words, Bill said to the old man, “ Let’s go to the restaurant.” When they got there, Bill asked the waiter to bring out bread and coffee to the old man. The old man finished the meal quickly. After the waiter took away the plate and the cup, the old man said, “Sorry for giving you so much trouble. I’m fine now. I’ll never forget your kindness! You are a very good young man.”

Bill was pleased when he heard this. Just when he wanted to pay for the meal, the waiter came. Bill and the old man learned in surprise that the food was free because it was the birthday of the boss, and they were the first customers that day. 四、听短文，填信息。

Mr. Read has a large farm near a hill. He and his wife are busy all the day. They’re often tired but they have a lot of expensive things and they live a happy life. One day their pigs had twenty baby pigs. Mrs. Read had to look after them at home. And at that time she had much housework to do. Several weeks later she let the baby pigs come out of the yard and look for some food themselves. Her seven-year-old son John came back from school. He was ready to help his mother. The woman was really happy and told him to count them and see if they were all there. The boy threw his schoolbag on the table and ran out. About half an hour later the supper was ready, but the boy didn’t come back. The woman had to go to see what was wrong with her son and she saw her son running after a baby pig.

“What are you running after it for?” she asked, “Are they all right?”

“I counted nineteen, Mummy,” said the boy, “But only the guy is running about so fast that I can’t count it all!”
