Directions: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by a number of

comprehension questions. Read the passage and choose the best answer to each question. Then, mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.

D. At the College Reception Desk at 2:00 p. m. on Fridays. Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:

Reading is thought to be a kind of conversation between the reader and the text. The reader puts questions, as it were, to the text and gets answers. In the light of these he puts further questions, and so on.

For most of the time this \goes on below the level of consciousness (意识). At tim

es, however, we have knowledge of it. This is usually when we are running into difficulties, when mismatch is occurring between expectations and meaning. When successful matching is being experienced, our questioning of the text continues at the unconscious level.

Different people talk with the text differently. Some stay very close to the words on the page; others take off imaginatively from the words, interpreting, criticizing, analyzing (分析) and examining. The former represents a kind of comprehension (理解), which is written in the text. The latter represents higher levels of comprehension. The balance between these is important, especially for advanced readers.

There is another conversation which from our point of view is equally important, and that is to do not with what is read but with how it is read. We call this a \conversation as opposed to a \conversation. It is concerned not with meaning but with the strategies (策略) we employ in reading. If we are advanced readers not only our ability to hold a content conversation with a text is usually pretty well developed, but also our ability to hold a process conversation. It is exactly this kind of conversation that is of importance when we are seeking to develop our reading to meet the new demands being placed upon us by studying at a higher level.

6. Reading as a kind of conversation between the reader and the text becomes conscious only when _____.

A. the reader's expectations agree with what is said in the text B. the reader has trouble understanding what the author says C. the reader asks questions and gets answers D. the reader understands a text very well

7. At a lower level of comprehension, readers tend to_____. A. read a text slowly B. read without thinking hard C. interpret a text in their own way

D. pay more attention to the meaning of words only 8. A \conversation has to do with _____. A. the proper use of reading strategies

B. matching our expectations with the meaning of a text C. the development of our ability to check the details D. determining the main idea of a text

9. According to the passage, it is of great importance for readers at a higher level to keep up a balance between _____.

A. conscious and unconscious levels of comprehension B. the reader's expectations and the meaning of a text C. lower and higher levels of comprehension D. interpreting and criticizing a text

10. If we want to develop our reading ability at an advanced level, we should________.

A. learn to use different ways in reading different texts B. make our reading process more conscious C. pay more attention to the content of a text

D. take a critical attitude(态度) towards the author's ideas

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:

When your parents advise you to \an education\in order to raise your income, they tell you only half the truth. What they really mean is to get just enough education to provide manpower for your society, but not so much that you prove an embarrassment to your society.

Get a high school diploma, at least. Without that, you will be occupationally dead unless your name happens to be George Bernard Shaw or Thomas Alva Edison, and you can successfully dropout in grade school. Get a college degree, if possible. With a B.A. you are on the launching pad. But now you have to start to put on the brakes. If you go for a master's degree, make sure it is an M. B. A. and is famous law of diminishing returns begins to take effect.

Do you know, for instance, that long-haul truck drivers earn more per year than full professors? Yes, the average 1977 salary for those truckers was $24000, while the full professors managed to earn just $ 23030. A Ph. D. is the highest degree you can get. Except for a few specialized fields such

as physics or chemistry where the degree can quickly be turned to industrial or commercial purposes, if you pursue such a degree in any other field, you will face a dim future. There are more Ph. D. s unemployed or underemployed in this country than any other part of the world.

If you become a doctor of philosophy in English or history or anthropology or political science or languages or-worst of all-in philosophy, you run the risk of becoming overeducated for our national demands. Not for our needs, mind you, but for our demands. Thousands of Ph. D. s are selling shoes, driving cars, waiting on table, and endlessly filling out applications month after month. They may also take a job in some high school or backwater college that pays much less than the janitor earns.

You can equate the level of income with the level of education only so far. Far enough, that is, to make you useful to the gross national product, but not so far that nobody can turn much of a profit on you.

11. According to the writer, what the society expects of education is to turn out people who _____ . A. will not be a disgrace to society B. will become loyal citizens C. can take care of themselves

D. can meet the nation's demands as a source of manpower 12. Many Ph. D. s are out of job because _____.

A. they are improperly educated

B. they are of little commercial &#118alue to their society C. there are fewer jobs in high schools D. they prefer easier jobs that make more money 13. The nation is only interested in people _____. A. with diplomas

B. who specialize in physics and chemistry C. who are valuable to the gross national product D. both A and C

14. Which of the following is not true?

A. Bernard Shaw didn't finish high schools, nor did Edison. B. One must think carefully before pursuing a master degree. C. The higher your education level, the more money you will earn.

D. If you are too well educated, you'll be overeducated for society's demands. 15. The writer sees education as _____.

A. a means of providing job security and financial security and a means of meeting a country's

demands for technical workers B. a way to broaden one's horizons C. more important than finding a job D. an opportunity that everyone should have

Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage:

As supplier of most of the food we eat and of raw material for many industrial processes, agriculture is clearly an important area of the economy. But the industrial performance of agriculture is even more important than this. For in nations where the productivity of farmers is low, most of the working population is needed to raise food and few people are available for production of investment goods or for other activities required for economic growth. Indeed, one of the factors related most closely to the per capita income( 人均收入) of a nation is the fraction (一部分)of its population engaged in farming. In the poorest nations of the world, more than half of the population lives on farms. This compares sharply with less than 10% in Western Europe and less than 4% in the United States.

In short, the course of economic development in general depends in a fundamental way on the performance of farmers. This performance, in turn, depends on how agriculture is organized and on the economic environment, or market structure, within which it functions. In the following pages the performance of American agriculture is examined. It is appropriate to begin with a consideration of its market structure.

16. This passage is most probably _____.

A. a news item

B. part of an introduction of a book

C. part of a lecture D. an advertisement

17. What is most important to agriculture is_____.

A. the amount of food it produces B. the per capita income of farmers C. the industrial performance

D. the production of investment goods 18. The word \in Line 3 refers to __ A. the provision of food and raw materials

B. the productivity of farmers C. the production of investment goods D. the economy as a whole

19. The performance of farmers essentially determines _____.

A. the size of the working population B. the organization of agriculture C. the market structure

D. the general development of economy 20. This passage will most probably be followed by a discussion of _____. A. the structure of American farming population B. the market structure of American agriculture C. the various functions of American agriculture D. the organization of American agriculture
