Script Elderly people who drink several cups of green tea a day are less likely to suffer from depression, probably due to a "feel good" chemical found in this type of tea, Japanese researchers said. Several studies have linked drinking green tea to lessening psychological problems and Kaijun Niu, of Tohoku University Graduate School, and colleagues found people aged 70 and older who drank four or more cups of green tea daily were 44 percent less likely to experience depression.

Niu's team investigated 1,058 relatively healthy elderly men and women. About 34 percent of the men and 39 percent of the women had symptoms of depression, according to the study that was published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. A total of 488 interviewees said they drank four or more cups of green tea a day, 284 said they drank two to three cups daily and the rest reported having one or fewer cups daily.

According to the researchers, the apparent effect of drinking more green tea on easing symptoms of depression did not fade after they factored in social and economic status, gender, diet and history of medical problems.

There was no association between consumption of black or oolong tea, or coffee, and lower symptoms of depression. A component in green tea which is thought to have a good effect on the brain, may explain the "potentially beneficial effect" shown in the current study, Niu noted, adding that more study is needed.

16.What's the result of the research?

A) There is a "feel good" chemical in coffee and black tea.

B) The age of people who drink green tea.

C) The color of drinks people choose.

D) The chemical component in green tea.

正确答案为 D 你没有作答。

解析:

音频最后提到,绿茶中的一种化学物质能够对大脑产生好的作用(A component in green tea which is thought to have a good effect on the brain, may explain the "potentially beneficial effect"),所以选D。

Script

It sounds a little bit ridiculous, but in wealthy countries, there's nothing like an economic recession to boost the population's health. According to a report in the September 1st Canadian Medical Association Journal, when our paychecks get lighter, we do more than tighten our purse strings—we also tighten our belts, kick bad habits and manage to lower our death rates.

Economic growth is usually associated with increased life spans, but the report says that's only true for very poor countries. Researchers looked at data from dozens of 20th century international health studies and found that, once the annual income of the citizens passed $5,000, recessions actually helped health. During lean times, people in relatively wealthy countries drink and smoke less and stop overeating. They also go out less, which means fewer trips in the car. It all adds up to fewer deaths from things like lung cancer, liver disease, heart attacks and car crashes.

The researchers say that fewer hours in the office can also mean more time with family and friends. These close social interactions lead to less stress and better health. Of course, some people may find more family time to be a lot like good medicine—hard to swallow.

19.What will happen when people's paychecks get lighter?

A) People may get a serious disease.

B) People will refuse to use belts.

C) People will get rid of bad habits.

D) Human's death rates will increase.

解析:

音频中提到,在比较富裕的国家,经济萧条实际上有助于人们保持健康(recessions actually helped health),所以选A。

B) Less social interactions than before.

C) Fewer trips and car crashes than before.

D) More psychological stress than before.

解析:

音频中提到,经济萧条期人们会减少出行,这也就意味着开车的次数少了(which means fewer trips in the car),所以选C。

Script Last month we reported about a study that showed eating even a little less salt could greatly help the heart. The study was published in New England Journal of Medicine. The scientists used a computer model to predict how just three grams less salt a day would affect heart disease in the United States.

The scientists said the results would be 13 percent fewer heart attacks, four percent fewer deaths and 11 percent fewer new cases of heart disease. And 240 billion dollars in health care savings. Researchers said it could prevent 100,000 heart attacks and 92,000 deaths every year. The researchers were from the University of California, Stanford University and Columbia University. They and public health professionals in the United States are interested in a national campaign to persuade people to eat less salt. Such campaigns are already in place in Britain, Japan and Finland.

However, some scientists say such a campaign is an experiment with the health of millions of people. Michael Alderman is among the critics. He is a high blood pressure expert and professor in New York. He says that eating less salt results in lower blood pressure. But he says studies have not clearly shown that lowering salt means fewer heart attacks. And he says salt has other biological effects. He says calling for reductions in the national diet could have good effects, but it could also have harmful results. He says there is not enough evidence either way.

Suffering with joint pain? Millions of Americans suffer with joint pain for a variety of reasons. Sports fatigue, arthritis (关节炎) and aging can all cause wear and tear on your joints (36)leading to discomfort and painful joints. Every single (37)movement your body makes puts pressure on your joints. Up, down, side to side your joints are (38)constantly strained.

For some people, just moving around results in joint pain. Even people with (39)occasional joint pain suffer through activities they once loved. Your joints age over time and like any part of your body, they require regular care and comfort. Many people don't realize how important joint care is, or how to stop joint pain. Some people (40)assume painful joints are just part of life.

However, (41)breakthrough discovery is changing everything. Researchers in Cambridge have discovered a new compound of all-natural ingredients that (42)promises to relieve joint pain, improve mobility (灵活性), and in some cases protect the actual joints themselves. The new formula, branded under the trademark Green Light Joint Support, includes ingredients with clinical (43)trials nothing short of amazing.

The samples arrive just a few days after ordering and unlike most joint relievers, the results are almost (44)immediate . By the second week of the trial, results can be even more impressive with increased flexibility.

After trying many of the joint relief products on the (45)market , we've found huge differences in quality. It is an impressive product and a great choice for anyone looking to comfort and relieve their joints.

Ten Ways to Improve Your Life

A Before you call a physical doctor for therapy, try spending a few days without your wallet or purse. Men's wallets can be so thick, they press on nerves when sat on for any length of time. Likewise, women's shoulder bags can weigh ten pounds or more and can twist the body in all sorts of strange ways. Clean out your wallet or purse, and see if the pain on your back doesn't ease.

B What is the fountain of youth? Exactly what it suggests. Being just two percent water-lacking can make you act and feel older. For a sharp mind, smooth skin, better health, and fluid movement, you need water. But forget about the old eight-times-eight rule (eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily). Healthy people, it turns out, get all the water they need from what they eat and drink (that includes tea and coffee but not alcohol). Thirst, though, should be your guide. If you've worked up a sweat exercising, are in a hot climate, or are taking your medicine, you may need to drink more than usual.

C Ashley Sharko and two college friends got lost for 55 hours in the Grand Woods. They spent two near-freezing nights without food or water under pine branches. The incident taught Sharko some hard lessons about hiking (徒步旅行) in wild: 1) Always leave a note about where you're heading (it was a text to her dad that aided her rescue); 2) follow water downstream to find civilization, but be prepared to turn back if it leads instead to cliffs or a waterfall; 3) stay in open areas during daylight search hours (Sharko was spotted by a helicopter). If you bed down for the night, mark a nearby open area with rocks or colorful gear; and 4) if you encounter a bear (as she did), avoid eye contact and back away slowly and quietly. If it's charging, jump, yell, and wave your arms to chase it away.

D Two of the hottest high-tech tools are mobile phones and GPS (全球定位系统) units for your car. Both can simplify your life enormously or, if you're not careful, ruin it. To protect yours: Never program your home address into your GPS. If your car is stolen, all the thief has to do is hit that Go Home button to be guided to your place and, since he knows you're not there, press the garage-door opener for access. Instead, program a local store's address. Be careful how you list people in your phone's contacts list. If you lose your cell, the thief can text Husband for a "forgotten" personal ID number and then use your bank card to clear out your account. Use first

names instead.

E It may sound impossible, but the secret to finding more time in your day is spending more time in bed at night. According to James Maas, a sleep researcher at Cornell University, "being lack of sleep makes you do everything more slowly and with less focus. Most people don't realize what it's like to be fully awake and how much they can accomplish when they are." To determine if this is the solution to your time problem, add one hour to your nightly rest for a week. When test subjects at Henry Ford Hospital's Sleep Disorders and Research Center (Detroit, Michigan) did this, their level of alertness jumped 25 percent.

F Stop thinking of it as exercise. That separates it from life, which is counter-productive (产生反作用的). Better to think of being more active. This subtle shift in your mind appears to be more helpful to long-term health and weight loss. Russell Pate, a professor of exercise science at the University of South Carolina, compared two people, one who was "inactive" (but active most of the day) and one who exercised for 60 minutes daily (but who was not very active). The inactive person consumed ten percent more energy than the exerciser. So if you're constantly feeling as if you don't have time to get to the gym, make the world your gym.

G Stop going from one fashionable eating plan to another. Instead, take the advice of Ellie Krieger, a Food Network cooking master and the author of So Easy: Luscious (美味的), Healthy Recipes (食谱) for Every Meal of the Week. "Ask yourself one question before trying any diet," she advises. "And that is 'Can I eat this way for the rest of my life?' " If the answer is no, it's not worth the effort, because you'll eventually come off it. Only diets that are sustainable are ultimately successful.

H "I never expected any kind of religion," says Waugh, a well-known nonreligious physicist. "But when you take almost anything and look at it closely with love, it creates an almost religious experience inside you. Something that's supposedly simple and predictable turns out to be complex and incredibly beautiful." Try it: In addition to looking up for answers and inspiration, look around.

I Try to land an interview between 9 am and 11 am. According to a survey by Robert Half Finance & Accounting, 69 percent of executives polled said that's the most productive meeting time. (After 3 pm is the worst.) And once you're in the door, make sure you're "on." Even though job interviews can last an hour or more, it's in the first ten minutes that managers form their opinion of you. The biggest mistake interviewees make? Having little or no knowledge of the company they want to work for.

J The easiest way to become an entrepreneur (企业家) is to become a consultant. Instead of "deep pockets," all that's required is deep knowledge and experience in one subject area. Pamela Mitchell, president of the Reinvention Institute in Miami, suggests offering your services free of charge to a nonprofit in order to build your résumé and contacts. When you're approached by potential clients, never say you're "consulting on the side," because that devalues your work. Instead, look and act the part, always offering solutions rather than just identifying problems.
