Should Retirement Age Be Postponed?

Along with the trend of longevity, nobody could have failed to notice a heated debate on whether it is wise to postpone retirement age.

Some people argue that it’s necessary to postpone the retirement age in that it is a good way to deal with the aging population. One of the direct results of the aging society is a drop in the labor force supply, which can be relieved by postponing the retirement age. However, other people hold a negative view about this phenomenon. For one thing, this reform could raise the pressure of social employment, especially for the present severe situation. For another, it may diminish the senior’s leisure time and the probabilities to enjoy their retirement pension.

For my part, we should take the level of the reform and the elder’s interest into consideration so that a clearer perspective of the debate can be gained.

My View on the Expansion of Higher Education

The past years have witnessed a frenzied expansion of universities. Many schools, however, have just focused on scale expansion, and neglected quality improvement, which, inevitably, brings about a great many problems.

For one thing, the enrollment expansion could lead to the shortage of teaching resources. There will be many more students in one class than ever before., which makes tutors’ dedication of energy to each student impossible. For another, it will increase students’ anxiety about employment. The large number of college graduates has far exceeded the demand of the job market, which will further worsen the underemployment crisis.

As far as I am concerned, the expansion of higher education has brought challenges as well as opportunities for both individuals and our nation. With effective measures taken by the relevant departments, the problems as mentioned above will be solved.

My View on Charity

Charity is of utmost importance to us humans. While following a spate of scandals, some individuals and institutions involved in this field have encountered criticism in recent months.

There are several reasons for this phenomenon. Above all, compared with those of developed countries, the charity awareness in our country is backward. Some people equal charity with donation, and therefore they believe that charity is the rich’s responsibility and has nothing to do with the middle-class and the poor. The second thing that must be taken into consideration is that a number of individuals and charitable organizations lack a sense of social responsibility which results in the declining social credibility.

For my part, I believe the following steps can address this situation. Firstly, people’s awareness of how profound influence charity can bring to our society should be heightened. Secondly, rigorous supervision must be carried out by the administrations involved, so that the charity activities will become more transparent.

How to Improve Campus Safety?

Gone are the days when college was supposed to be a safe, nurturing place where students

learn. Recently, there are numbers of reports on campus crime, which have brought campus safety into public concern.

Above all, it is students themselves who should strengthen their security awareness. They can take specific actions to protect themselves from dangerous persons and situations. For example, they should deny any unfamiliar individuals’ entry to their dormitories. In addition, more equipment such as monitors should be installed on campus so as to detect crimes as soon as possible. Last but not least, a proper amount of security guards should be arranged to patrol the campus.

As far as I am concerned, students and administrators involved should exert joint efforts to improve campus safety. Only in this way can students live on a safe and sound campus.

How to Enhance Our Sense of Happiness?

Along with the improvement of living standards, people are no longer content with being fed and clothed adequately. They are more concerned about how to enhance their sense of happiness.

To a large extent, happiness depends on individuals’ understanding about it. For some people, happiness relies on material basis, without which they can’t live comfortably and decently. For others, they believe that happiness has nothing to do with money. Thus to enhance happiness is not equal to improving one’s material living standards. Instead, people are supposed to confront their life with right attitude, to be active and grateful in order to have a happy life.

For my part, money does buy happiness, but only up to the point where it enables one to live comfortably. To boost one’s happiness not only needs the material but also the spiritual enrichment. It encompasses living a meaningful life, utilizing your gifts and your time, living with reflection and objective.

Mark Adding policy of college Entrance Exam

The mark adding policy of college entrance exam has been practiced for a long time, although college entrance examination of this year has finished, yet many people pay much attention to the issue of awarded marks.

Some people think this policy should be cancelled. Due to the imprecision of the mark adding system, the whole test process is not effectively controlled, and the policy has become a tool for some people to ask for interests for themselves. However, others think the policy should be perfected for it is helpful to the students who have some specialties but poor at some other subjects. The mark adding policy can encourage students to attend more activities besides study.

From my point of view, the merits of mark adding policy do outweigh its demerits. Although the policy still has some defects, it will bring more benefits to all if rational criteria can be established.

College Students’ Military Training

As we all know, Chinese college students are required to undergo basic military training prior to the introduction to college education. There is no denying the fact that it has been a hotly debated topic as to whether students should attend military training.

Some people advocate students’ participation in military training. They insist that through the training, students can not only build up their bodies but also develop their team spirit and sense of discipline. Others, however, hold the opposite view. They argue that a sudden increase of intense physical exercise does harm to students’ health.

Based on the above discussion, I am inclined to agree with the former point of view. Military training arranged by college is not only a lesson that college students must deal with, but also an opportunity for students who come from all over the country to get acquainted with each other.

Are Advanced Electronic Products Necessary for College Students?

Gone are the days when college students refer to libraries as the only access to study or information. Nowadays, almost every student equips themselves with one or more advanced electronic products, such as smart phone, e-book, etc.

Some hold that it’s necessary for college students to own advanced devices. It is convenient for students to read e-books, for they can download enormous reading materials at low cost, and the portability of e-books can afford students the chance to read anytime anywhere. The smart phone can guarantee the possibility of surfing the Internet as long as WiFi is available. However, others think the prevalence of advanced electronic products among students will make them take up the addictive reliance. For example, smart phone provides easy access to games which will influence students’ study. In addition, it may stimulate students to “keep up with the Joneses”.

Overall, the advanced electronic products afford more convenience and entertainment than trouble. But when choosing what products we are to possess, it is always wise to consider our purchasing power and actual requirements.

My View on Micro-blog

With the number of micro-bloggers soaring, micro-blog has become part of our lives and drawn much attention around the country.

Micro-blog is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, micro-blog plays an important role in upholding justice, advancing social democracy and providing a platform for people to comment about their lives. On the other hand, micro-blogging can also be potentially dangerous as it may give away people’s privacy. What is worse, some people argue that the widespread use of micro-blogs has made it easier for people to spread rumors and false news, and the platform is predestined for closure.

As far as I am concerned, micro-blogs will play an increasingly important role in our lives. Only when administrations create a favorable condition for communication and users conform to the rules of the new media, can micro-bloggers enjoy a healthy information-sharing platform.

On Cross-Campus Selective Course

Recent years has witnessed a sharp rise in the number of students choosing cross-campus selective courses. However, whether this program is a blessing or a curse has sparked a spirited debate.

Convincing arguments can be made that the program of cross-campus selective course brings

numerous benefits to both universities and students. To start with, the program will ensure the complementation between one university and another. Secondly, through the program, students can acquire more comprehensive and practical skills, which may distinguish them from their peers in the grim employment market; they also will get acquainted with more friends. However, the program may carry potential drawbacks. The courses are mainly demonstrated in the form of lectures, which fails to meet the actual demand of the society. In addition, it in inconvenient for students to attend classed, let alone win academic assistance from professors outside.

I am convinced that with the reform of education and the improvement of transportation, those disadvantages of the program can be mitigated, and the cross-school elective course can be given full play.
