In Canada you can find dogs, cats, horses, etc. in almost every family. These are their pets. People love these pets and have them as their good friends. If an animal happened to get run over by a car, people would be very sad about it.

People in Canada have many reasons to like animals. One of them might be that their family ties are not as close as ours. When children grow up, they leave their parents and start their own life. Instead of hitting the beach, fourteen high school students traded swimming suits for lab coats last summer and turned their attention to scientific experiments.

The High School Research Program offers high school students guidance with researchers in Texas A&M’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Jennifer Funkhouser, academic adviser for the

Department of Rangeland Ecology and Management, directs this four-week summer program designed to increase understanding of research and its career potential.

Several considerations go into selecting students, including grades, school involvement and interest in science and agriculture. And many students come from poorer school districts. Funkhouser says, ―This

4

is their chance to learn techniques and do experiments they never would have a chance to do in high school.‖

Warner Ervin of Houston is interested in animal science and learned how to tell male from female mosquitoes. His adviser, Craig Coates, studies the genes of mosquitoes that allow them to fight against malaria(疟疾) and yellow fever. Coates thought this experience would be fun and helpful to the high school students.

The agricultural research at A&M differs from stereotypes(固定模式). It’s ―molecular(分子) science on the cutting edge,‖ Funkhouser says. The program broadened students’ knowledge. Victor Garcia of Rio Grande City hopes to become a biology teacher and says he learned a lot about chemistry from the program.

At the end of the program, the students presented papers on their research. They’re also paid $600 for their work-another way this program differs from others, which often charge a fee.

Fourteen students got paid to learn that science is fun, that agriculture is a lot more than milking and plowing and that research can open many doors.

59. The research program is chiefly designed for . A. high school advisers from Houston B. college students majoring in agriculture C. high school students from different places

D. researchers at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences 60. When the program was over, the students .

Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. ―I was a clothes addict,‖ he jokes. ― I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled.‖ Today David wears casual clothes – khaki pants and sports shirt – to the office. He hardly ever wears a necktie. ―I’m working harder than ever,‖ David says, ―and I need to feel comfortable.‖

More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work. In the United States, the change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday, but only on Friday. This became known as ―dress-down Friday‖ or ―casual Friday‖. ―What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing.‖ said business consultant Maisly Jones.

Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it’s easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code. ―A lot of young people don’t want to dress up for work,‖ says the owner of a software company, ―so it’s hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code.‖ Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss and Company, 85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employee morale(士气). Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative effect on productivity. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. ―Suits are expensive, if

6

you have to wear one every day,‖ one person said. ―For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes.‖

67. David Smith refers to himself as having been ―a clothes addict‖, because . A. he often wore khaki pants and a sports shirt B. he couldn’t stand a clean appearance C. he wanted his clothes to look neat all the time D. he didn’t want to spend much money on clothes

68. David Smith wears casual clothes now, because . A. they make him feel at ease when working B. he cannot afford to buy expensive clothes C. he looks handsome in casual clothes D. he no longer works for any company

69. According to this passage, which of the following statements is FALSE? A. Many employees don’t like a conservative dress code. B. Comfortable clothes make employees more productive. C. A casual clothes code is welcomed by young employees. D. All the employers in the U.S. are for casual office wear.

70. In this passage, the following advantages of casual office wear are mentioned except . A. saving employees’ money B. making employees more attractive

C. improving employees’ motivation D. making employees happier

71 Being angry doesn’t really solve much, but what people do when they feel angry is important. The goal is to calm down and try to solve what is bothering you. This is hard for some kids and adults, too. Instead of calming down, some kids might keep getting more and more upset until they explode like a volcano!

72 Their anger might be so strong that they lose control of their temper. They may act in ways unacceptable and hurtful. People may say that someone has trouble controlling their temper. 73

Some kids might get so angry that they scream at their parents, break something , or even worse , hit their brothers or sisters. 74 However, it’s not OK for a kid to do any of those things .Kids don’t want to act in this way , but sometimes angry feelings can be hard to manage. So what to do?

Well, the good news is that kids don’t just have to keep making the same mistakes over and over again. 75 Imagine your temper as a puppy inside you that needs some training. The puppy is not bad — it will probably turn out a great dog. It just needs to learn some rules because, right now, that puppy is causing some problems to you.

A. In fact, they usually mean that a kid behaves badly when feeling angry. B. You don’t want to cause trouble.

7

C. Kids should be allowed to express their feelings, even angry ones. D. Some kids get angry more often or more easily than some other kids. E. You can train you temper.

F. Instead of thinking of the person you’re angry with, think of something else. G. Everybody gets angry sometimes.

36-40 DCDCA 41—45 DABBD 46—50 BCADD 51—55 CCCBD

故选up。 37.C。

47.C。固定结构be able to do sth. 48.A。

52.C。―on the job‖为一常用短语。

A选项应用a moment; C选项表
