The best mistake I ever made was when I was 24 years old and a senior at New York University(NYU).At the time,I was planning to get a law and business degree after graduation and wasn’t even job hunting.

One day,1 walked into the student center looking to get a soda, but instead found a roomful of students wearing suits and ties and holding a stack of resumes(简历).Clearly,I had accidentally walked into a job fair.I was casually dressed and had a scarf on my head because I hadn’t washed my hair that morning.I tried to walk across the hall when a man stopped me with his hand reached out.“Hi,my Dame is Donny McKenthan.Would you like to work for IBM?”I replied,“Uh,no thank you,I’m just getting something to drink from that machine over them.”

I ended up having a wonderful conversation with him,but I told him there was no why he could convince me.My course was set. I went out for dinner that night with some friends. When I mentioned my story, they could n’t believe I was foolish enough to turn down interviewing with this amazing company! I went home that night, dug out his card from the garbage bin and called him back.

After a series of successful interviews,an IBM manager called me to extend an offer, which would be followed up in a few days in writing. When I asked what the salary was,he cryptically(含糊其辞)said $ 18.In my mind,I thought $ 18,000 a year was low, given what I had been earning for part—time work paying my way through NYU.So I told him I thought I should earn more, and started to negotiate. He was

surprised and explained that the starting salary for all trainees was set in store.

The next day,I received the offer in the mail.As it turns out,I misunderstood the offer—I would earn $1,800 a month. That was a great salary,so of course,I took the job.I never did tell my manager about my mistake, but a few months later he placed me in sales became I was the only trainee who had tried to negotiate a starting !That comedy of errors ended up being a wonderful 22-year career at IBM. 24.Why did the author go to the student center? A.To look for a job. B.To meet a friend. C.To wash her hair.

D.To get a drink.

25.How did the author’s friends feel about her refusal of the interview? A.Satisfied. B.Admired. C.Encouraged. D.Surprised. 26.What was the offer that the IBM made? A.$18 a day.

B.$1,800 a month. D.$18,000 a year.

C.$18,000 a month.

27.Why was the author placed in sales a few months later? A.She did very well in the training. B.She had a law and business degree. C.She was brave enough to negotiate. D.She was a person full of curiosity.

Some people prefer Google when exploring the Web.Some like Yahoo Or Bing. But now more than 2.5 million people are using Ecosia a month, because every time they click“Search”they help plant a tree. Ecosia donates an impressive 80 percent of its income, after expenses,to the programs that flow trees in Africa. The money,up to $75,000 a month(most of it from ads),is responsible for four new trees every minute, according to Ecosia spokesperson Jacey Bingler.

The group, based in Germany, had been funding a tree program in Brazil.but last October it began financing WeForest’s reforestation project in Burkina Faso.in West Africa. It is part of a larger effort to spread greenery across dry regions of Africa.Ecosia’s goal is to plant 1 billion trees by 2020.Originally it hoped to reach that level by this year, but planting costs were high and uses did not quickly flock to(涌向)the search engine. That is all picking up steam today.“We celebrated our first million tress in November 2019,the second million already in May 2019,”Bingler noted. And the cost in Burkina Faso works out to about 30 cents a tree, instead of the dollar being spent before.

Bingler says that the search engine continues to improve;searches are now 34 percent faster than they were last year.It is powered primarily by Bing and is a1so improved by Ecosia’s own technologies.Users
