Passage One

Friendship is both a source of pleasure and a component of good health. People who have close friends naturally enjoy their company. Of equal importance are the concrete emotional benefits they derive. When something sensational happens to us, sharing the happiness of the occasion with friends intensifies our joy. Conversely, in times of trouble and tension, when our spirits are low, unburdening our worries and fears to compassion-ate friends alleviates the stress. Moreover, we may even get some practical suggestions for solving a particular problem.

From time to time, we are insensitive and behave in a way that hurts someone's feelings. Afterward, when we feel guilty and down in the dumps, friends can reassure us. This positive interaction is therapeutic, and much less expensive than visit so a psychologist.

Throughout life, we rely on small groups of people for love, admiration, respect, moral support, and help. Almost everyone has a \men and women have such friends, evidence is accumulating that indicates men rarely make close friends. Men are sociable and frequently have numerous business acquaintances, golf buddies, and so on. However, friendship does not merely involve a sharing of activities; it is a sharing of self on a very personal level. Customarily, men have shied away from close relationships in which they confide in others. By bottling up their emotions, men deprive themselves of a healthy outlet for their negative feeling.

People choose some friends because they are fun to be with; they “make things happen\Likewise, common interests appear to be a significant factor in selecting friends. Families with children, for instance, tend to gravitate toward families without children. It is normal to befriend people who have similar lifestyles, and organizations such as Parents without Partners have appeared on the scene as a natural outgrowth of this tendency. These groups focus on specific interest such as camping or politics. It is perfectly acceptable to select friends for special qualities as long as there is a balanced giving and taking that is mutually satisfying.

Very close and trusted friends share confidences candidly. They feel secure that they will not be ridiculed or derided, and their confidences will be honored. Betraying a trust is a very quick and painful way to terminate a friendship.

Passage Two

If you've just graduated from high school and are preparing for what might be your first year of college dorm life, you probably have a lot of questions and concerns. You may be facing the first time you've ever shared a room, especially with someone to whom you're not related. What if you don't get along? What do you need to take for your room? Top bunk or bottom bunk? For many, this will be an entirely new experience. First of all: relax. You're certainly not alone—chances are that every other freshman in the dorms will have the same fears and concerns. Take advantage of the time before school starts to prepare yourself. You can begin by reading some articles about what to expect and how to handle college dorm life.

It's natural for some homesickness to accompany your first two or three weeks of adjusting to college dorm life. You're in an entirely new environment. On the one hand, there are no more curfews, no constant reminders to do your homework, no questions about where you're going, or who you're going to be with. On the other hand, you're on your own for what might be the first time in your life. No one's cooking your meals, except maybe the cafeteria staff. No one's making sure your homework gets done, or that you get up for class

on time. No one's washing your clothes. The freedom accompanying college dorm life can be both a blessing and a curse. However, during this major transition, many students find that the biggest hurdle they face in their first college dorm life experience is homesickness. Here are a number of valuable tips on how to cope with the natural feelings of loneliness and homesickness that often affect new students.

Sharing your exciting and trying experiences with people from home can help dispel feelings of isolation and loneliness. You may actually learn that you're not missing much. However, if feelings of homesickness and depression persist as a result of college dorm life, make sure you talk to someone about them.

One of the anxieties that come with the approach to college dorm life lies in the preparation. How do you figure out what to take with you? Megan O'Leary, in What to Bring to College, provides a college dorm room checklist including many items you've probably considered, such as an alarm clock, a computer, and other essentials of college dorm life.

She also includes some items you may not have thought of, but that can make your college dorm life more pleasant, such as houseplants, a shower caddy, and a comfortable chair or bean bag. Be sure to get yourself a daily planner or calendar to mark down important dates, such as when papers or projects are due and exam days. Remember one of the biggest adjustments to college dorm life you'll have to make is to be disciplined, to put yourself in charge of getting your homework done and preparing for tests.

Experts agree that one of the best ways to cope with the loneliness that can accompany college dorm life is to get involved in activities on campus. Allowing yourself to get bored can lead to depression, so make sure you have things to do; the more you get out of your dorm room, the more you'll get out of college dorm life.

By finding activities you like, you'll meet like-minded people and develop friendships, and when you broaden your college experience you'll find that college dorm life becomes easier and easier.

Passage Three

It was the fall of 1955 and I was employed in my first job after high school. I would often park on a street bordering the Missouri State Governor's Mansion. If early, until time for work I would stay in the car reading or just enjoying the autumn colors of the trees and bushes on the beautiful grounds surrounding the mansion.

Because of the extensive leaf raking that time of year, there were often trustees from the nearby prison working around the mansion. It saddened me to see others walk past the prisoners looking straight ahead or with eyes averted so as not to acknowledge their presence. The trustees were not allowed to initiate conversation with people on the street; still they were human beings worthy of some sign of recognition.

Since I was too shy to speak, I simply smiled as I passed any of the prisoners. It was heart-warming to see their eyes light up as they returned the smile, none of us speaking a word.

At that time in history one never thought of locking car doors; so, I was surprised rather than concerned when one evening after work there was a package wrapped in newspapers on the seat of the car. And even more surprised when I unwrapped it to find a beautifully hand-carved leather purse. Who would have left such a gift?

As I admired the delicate detail of the designs I suddenly realized where the gift must have come from. I knew there were leather tooling classes for some of the prisoners; it had to be from one of the trustees. Since the trustees finished their work on the grounds before noon there was no one there at that moment to give any indication of an answer to my puzzle.

I was eager the next morning to reach my parking spot. And as I did one of the trustees who had been there regularly for several weeks was raking leaves near my car. He glanced my way as I parked and gathered my things to walk to the office. When I stepped onto the sidewalk with the beautiful purse in hand a smile as wide as the nearby Missouri River crossed his face. He was obviously the giver of the gift. Returning his smile I softly said, \but the expression on his face showed he was pleased. Touching the delicate design on the purse, I added, \beautiful!\Then, because there was nothing more I could say, I turned and walked to the office like every other day.

Because the work on the mansion grounds was obviously completed I never saw the giver of the gift or any of the trustees again. And in December I left my job to attend college in another town.

That was 48 years ago. I still have the purse. It is well worn now, not shiny new as it was then. But it remains one of the best gifts I ever received. Because each time I see it I'm reminded all over again of the power of a simple smile.

And I like to think that a smile can lift anyone's day. We are all prisoners of something. Perhaps we're restrained by our fears of venturing into the unknown, perhaps we're hesitant to extend our lives because of what others might think or maybe we're prisoners of our own inertia - too comfortable or too tired to peek beyond the horizon of our daily lives.

____ 11 The story happened in the winter of 1955.

____ 12. The author didn’t know who sent her the purse gift.

____ 13. The author felt worried when she found a package in her car. ____ 14. The author and the gift giver have become good friends. ____ 15. According to the author, a smile can lift anyone’s day.
