One of the best ways to understand the world around us is to stop and pick up a book. Here are some books by black authors, which are shaping our conversations about race.
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

The novel tells the tale of Starr Carter, a 16-year-old who is trying to going to a white high school without feeling like she is abandoning her friends and family in her black neighborhood. This Will Be My Undoing by Morgan Jerkins

Quietly sitting there reading, I found myself suddenly listening to the train guard’s announcement. Train travelers will surely agree that when the guard makes an announcement, whether it’s the recorded message or the guard’s message, few people listen to it, because it’s often quite dull or hard to understand. This one was different. I noticed that other passengers appeared to be listening, too. Not only that, everyone was smiling!
Why was so much attention being paid to this message? As best I can recall, the guard said something along these lines, “Good Morning Ladies, Gentlemen and Children,
this is the 7.35 a.m. from Penrith to Central and you’ll be pleased to know that we are on time. And what a lovely morning it is in Sydney today. The sun is shining, birds are singing, and all’s right with the world. I trust you have a great day wherever you’re going. Thanks for catching my train this morning and I hope to see you again soon.”
Quite a few people (obviously previous strangers) started talking to one another about the guard’s excellent message and how good it had made everyone feel. I started thinking about this, and then I found the young guard and said “Were you the guard on the 7:35 a.m. from Penrith?” The guard seemed a bit stunned at first, replying, “Yes, yyyyes.”“Well, I really appreciate your announcement. Thank you for your extremely good message, which gave me and the other passengers such a good start to the day. Please keep doing it.” I said.
There are two messages for me in what happened that day. Firstly, when people are happy in their work it shows in what that do and say. Secondly, the story attaches much importance to the benefits that accumulate from thanking people for something they’ve done, particularly when it’s not expected. Can you imagine the conversation that guard would have when he got home?
4. Why do few train travelers listen to the announcements? A. They usually feel sleepy.
B. The messages are unattractive.
D. They are absorbed in books.
C. The guard’s voice is not clear.
5. What does the underlined word “stunned” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Surprised. Patient.
6. What might the guard talk about with his family when he got home? A. The beautiful weather. C. The train from Penrith. appreciation.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. A Boring Train Story
B. An Intelligent Guard
D. A Different Train Announcement
B. The recorded message. D.
The
unexpected
B. Cautious.
C. Excited.
D.
C. A Lovely Morning in Sydney

The old saying that practice makes perfect seems to make no sense when it comes to schoolwork. Many educators today are looking for evidence to support the case for homework, but are coming up empty-handed. “Homework is all pain and no gain,” says author Alfie Kohn. He points out that no study has ever found a relationship between homework and academic achievement in elementary school.
Mary Jane Cera is the academic administrator for the Kino School, a private, non-profit kindergarten0through-12-grade school in Tucson, Arizona, and she maintains a no-homework policy across all grades. The purpose of the policy is to make sure learning remains a joy, not a thing that discourages social time and creative activity.
Many supporters of homework argue that life is filled with things we don’t like to do, and that homework teaches self-discipline, time management and other non-academic life skills. Kohn challenges this popular idea; he says that if kids have no choice when it comes to homework, they’re not really exercising judgment, and are instead losing their sense of autonomy.
At the Kino School, Cera says children often choose to take their favorite parts of school home. “A lot of what we see kids doing is continuing to write in journals, practicing music with their friends, and taking experiments home to show their parents,” she says. Surveys of Kino graduates suggest that the early control they are given over their education continues to serve them well into college, and that they feel better equipped to manage their time and approach professors with questions than other students do.
One of the reasons why we continue to assign homework, Kohn says, is our obsession(着迷)with standardized tests. Even if we can agree on the importance of kids doing better on tests, he says, there is no research to suggest that homework is the ticket to success.
Wherever the homework debate goes next, it’s worth taking a moment to examine if we’re asking the right questions about our children’s education. 8. Which of the following is Kohn’s idea?
th
A. Homework teaches students life skills.
B. Standardized tests are not important in education. C. The quality of homework is linked to students’ interests.
D. Homework is not connected with academic achievement in elementary school. 9. According to the text, Mary Jane Cera ________.
A. thinks that learning should help develop student’s creativity B. argues some homework should be assigned to students C. finds her students can’t finish their homework on time
D. believes in the connection between homework and academic achievement 10. What can we infer from the fourth paragraph? A. Students who so more homework study better.
B. Students who refuse homework have better time – management skills. C. Students who have control over their studies can do better in college. D. Students who have better professors have better academic performance. 11. What is the attitude of the author towards homework? A. Opposed. B. Objective.
C. Indifferent.

Imagine a cat that does not need someone to clean up after it keeps an older person company and help them remember to take their medicine. That is the shared dream of the toy maker Hasbro and scientists at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The researchers received a $3-nillion-dollar award from the National Science Foundation for a special project. They want to find ways to add artificial intelligence, or A.I., to Hasbro’s “Joy for All” robotic cat.
The cat has already been for sale for two years. Though priced over 1000 dollars, it sold quite well. It was meant to act as a “companion” for older people. Now the project is aimed at developing additional abilities for the cat. Researchers at Brown’s Humanity-Centered Robotics Initiative are working to decide which activities older adults may need the most. They hope to make the cat perform a small number of activities very well. Such activities include finding lost objects and reminding the person to take medicine or visit their doctor. They also want to keep the cost down
D. Supportive.
to just a few hundred dollars.
It is an idea that has appealed to Jeanne Elliot. Her 93-year-old mother Mary Derr lives with her in South Kingstown. Derr has dementia(痴呆). The boy for All cat that Elliot bought this year has become a true companion for Derr. The cat stays with Derr and keeps her calm while Eliot is at work. Elliot said a robotic cat that helps her mother to remember to take her medicine and be careful when he walks would be greater.
The researchers are trying to learn how the improved cats will complete helpful activities and how they will communicate. They say that they do not want a talking cat, however. Instead they are trying to design a cat that can move its head in a special way to successfully communicate its message. In the end, they hope to create an exchange
between the human and the cat in which the human feels the cat needs them. By doing so, the researchers hope they can even help prevent feelings of loneliness and sadness among elderly people.
12. What’s the purpose of the project? A. To relieve the pain of the elderly. medicine.
C. To help make the robotic cat smarter. elderly.
13. Compared with the old model, the new robotic cat will be ________. A. cheaper
B. smaller
C. more talkative D. more expensive

14. What does Paragraph 3 intend to tell us? A. The more functions of the cat, the better. the elderly.
C. There is no cure for dementia at present.D. Mary Derr would have died without the cat.
15. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The feeling of being needed is vital to the elderly.
B. The cat gives much help to
B. Each family can afford such a cat in the future. C. A talking cat is quite popular among the elderly. D. Feelings of sadness among the elderly are unavoidable. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How many times have you started to make changes in your life, study a certain topic, or start a certain project, only to stop after a short while? It is mainly due to lack of motivation. It is an inner driving force. In order to accomplish anything, you need the driving force. How to get motivated? 16
Start with small goals
It is easier to display motivation in connection with short-term goals. When I comes to long-term goals, it is always hard to sustain the motivation for along period of time, unless you have a strong ambition. 17 After learning to awaken motivation and increase the ambition, you can proceed to bigger goals.
18
Writing it down will help you describe it in clear and brief words. The more specific it is, the easier it would be to focus on it and awaken the necessary motivation.
Make workable plans.
With small steps that are easy to follow, insist on taking at least one step a day. 19 When you see a goal as doable(可做的), it would be easier to become motivated and enthusiastic.
Read inspiring quotes related to the topic of your goal.
I suggest that you read a few in the morning and again at night, before you go to sleep. You may also read them at any other time of the day. You can write a few on a piece of paper or save them on your smartphone.
20 If you want to make changes in your life you need to start them now, this very moment, and not tomorrow. A. Awaken the motivation B. Make your goal very clear
C. So, what are you waiting for?
D. Here are a few tips that can help you. E. What is motivation, and why do we need it?
F. This is why it is wiser to start with small goals, which you can accomplish quite fast.
G. This will give you confidence, and make you believe that the goal is within your reach.
