Since 1985,Johnny Jennings,86,has been selling newspapers and magazines to a recycling center with his son to raise his savings account.By the time Jennings’only child was 17,he stopped joining his father, but the money they made covered the down payment for his first home years later.

Even though his son is all grown up now,Jennings hasn’t slowed down his efforts. In fact,he’s turned his recycling money into something bigger.

Jennings visits local churches and businesses to collect paper, which he brings to a recycling center for money. But instead of putting those earnings in his own bank account,he sends every dollar to Georgia Baptist Children’s Homes & Family Ministries.Once a year,he’11 give the organization a check somewhere between $10,000 and $35,000.By 2016,that reaches $400,000.

Jennings devoted himself to helping Georgia Baptist Children’s Homes&Family Ministries after his first visit there when he was 18.“When we went to leave, these three little boys grabbed me by the knees and said,‘Will you be my daddy?’”Jennings told TODAY.“And I said I'll do what I can. That took my heart, right there.”

Jennings says he’ll continue raising money for charity as long as his health allows.“If you got it to give, give it away,”he told CNN.

Do people really put messages into bottles? Has anyone ever found such a message? The answer to both questions is yes.

A Greek teacher named Theophrastus put messages in bottles about 2,300 years ago.He

5

wanted to prove that the Mediterranean Sea was formed by water coming in from the Atlantic. The bottles floated from the Atlantic into the Mediterranean and proved him right.

During the rule of Elizabeth I of England(1558—1603),spies sent messages back to England in bottles.Because of this, the queen’s assistant opened every floating bottle found.Anyone else was forbidden to open such a bottle. In the late 1700s,Ben Franklin used bottles to show where the main ocean currents in the Atlantic are.His findings, and the charts he drew, were correct. They were so accurate,in fact, that they are still followed today.

In 1929 German scientists sent a bottle floating in the South Indian Ocean. The message asked the finder to record the date and place of the Finding. It asked that the note and boric be set afloat again. The bottle first landed at Cape Horn at the tip of South America. In 1935 it was picked up the second time, off the coast of Australia. The bottle had traveled more than 16,000 miles, possibly the farthest trip by a bottle.

The longest trip in terms of time took 150 years.A Japanese sailor sent a bottle floating in 1784 when his ship was wrecked on a Pacific Ocean reef.In 1943 it was picked up—in the Japanese village where he had been born.

Thousands of bottles are out on the waters today. The United States still uses bottles and other floating objects to study ocean currents. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service used them to study fishing grounds.Keep your eyes open. You just might find one. 28.Which of these events happened first?

A.Theophrastus proved how the Mediterranean was formed. B.Ben Franklin showed where Atlantic currents are. C.Spies sent messages to England in bottles. D.The Japanese sailor’s bottle was found.

29.What do we know about the bottle sent by the German scientists? A.It was received by the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service. B.It was opened by one of the Queen’s assistants. C.It floated directly to the sender’s birthplace. D.It was picked up twice during the long trip. 30.It can be inferred from the passage that_________.

A.the bottle sent by German scientists floated past Cape Horn without being seen

6

B.a Greek teacher helped show main ocean currents in the Atlantic Ocean C.the Japanese sailor never saw his bottle again after he sent it floating D.the message from the Japanese sailor was found by an Australian 31.What can be the best title of the passage?

A.Floating Bottles B.Study of the Oceans C.The History of Bottles

D.Scientists and Bottles

When you’re out with a friend and take a photo of yourselves,do you know that you are also creating a work of art? Or that you are competing with Vincent van Gogh himself? Probably not.Your idea might be to show off your selfie(自拍)on WeChat or QQ,but you probably don’t think of the internet as a gallery or of yourself as an artist.

But the manager of London’s Saatchi Gallery,Nigel Hurst, thinks that the casual pictures we take of ourselves do have something in common with self-portraits by the great masters. In support of the idea, the Saatchi Gallery has a new exhibition called From Selfie to Self-Expression,which is running now until May 30.

It features well-known self-portraits from artists including those drawn by Dutch painters Van Gogh and Rembrandt. It also has selfies on show, which include one taken by US celebrity Kim Kardashian and another of former US President Barack Obama with former UK Prime Minister David Cameron, according to the BBC.The gallery is even encouraging visitors to add their own selfies to the show.

Hurst is perhaps not being 1 00 percent serious. He isn’t claiming that a snap you take of yourself in your favorite restaurant can be compared with a self-image painted by Van Gogh. But he does make a serious point.Once upon a time,it was only artists who could make images of themselves. They were the only ones,as Hurst told The Guardian, who“had the skills, materials and tools to create self-portraits.”Today,however,we“all have that ability through our smartphones.”

And Hurst described the smartphone selfie as an example of“a transform in society using technology as a means of self-expression”.He told The Guardian:“The selfie generation is becoming the self-expression generation as each of us seeks to explore and share our inner creativity through the one artistic tool to which we all have access, the smartphone.”

7

32.What is the new exhibition intended to express?

A.A celebrity’s selfie is more likely to become a masterpiece. B.Selfies are a better way to express oneself than self-portraits. C.Smartphones have changed the way people understand the world. D.Selfies have something in common with great artists’self-portraits. 33.What does the underlined word“those”in Paragraph 3 refer to? A.Self-portraits. B.Selfies. C.Artists. D.Visitors. 34.Which of the following would Nigel Hurst agree with? A.Selfies help us master the skills used by earlier artists. B.Every snap you take of yourself can have artistic value. C.Self-portraits of great masters have lost their attraction. D.Selfies offer people a chance to explore their creativity. 35.What is the writer’s purpose in writing this article? A.To remind readers of works from some famous artists. B.To explain the reason for people enjoying taking selfies. C.To introduce a new exhibition of selfies and self-portraits. D.To make a comparison between selfies and self-portraits.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)(注意:如果选E涂AB;选F涂AC;选G涂AD)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

As we can see, everyone seems to rush in their life, but you don’t have to be like that. You can be different. You can walk instead of driving in rush hour traffic. You can limit your time spent on your mobile phone, and if necessary, power it off.Your environment doesn’t control your life —you do.I’m not going to give you a step-by-step guide to moving slower. 36 Try to do less.

Cut back on your projects,on your task list,on how much you try to do each day.Concentrate not on quantity but on quality. 37 Save smaller, routine tasks for later in the day,but give yourself time to focus.

Have fewer meetings.

8

38 And they eat into your day, forcing you to squeeze the things you really need to do into small windows, and making you rush.Try to have blocks of time with no interruptions,so you don’t have to rush from one meeting to another.

39 When you do the important things with focus, without rush, there will be things that get pushed back, and that don’t get done. And you need to ask yourself:how necessary are these things? What would happen if I stopped doing them?

Practice being comfortable with doing nothing.

One thing I’ve noticed is that when people have to wait, they become impatient or uncomfortable. They want their mobile device because standing and waiting is a waste of time.Instead, try just sitting there, looking around, soaking in your surroundings.Try standing in line and just listening to people around you. 40 .

Try these things out.Life is better when unrushed. A.Start to put off or cancel the unnecessary. B.Meetings are usually a“big waste of time”. C.Avoid rushing to appointments or other places.

D.It takes practice, but you’11 do it with a smile after a while. E.The world likely won’t end if you don’t pass one of the examinations. F.Pick no more than 3 important things or just even one,and work on those first. G.But here are some things to consider and perhaps adopt,if they work for your life.

Nowadays more and more Chinese go to work with bicycle, leaving their cars at home. Why are so many people riding bicycles to work? They have different reason for it.

First, bicycles do not use up any fuel. Therefore, they cost less than other means of transport.Besides, bicycles do not need many space on the road, and it is easily to find a place for it.And everybody knows that riding a bicycle is healthy sport.

When people drive their cars to work or shop, they lost the chance to exercise, but the waste gas from the cars will pollute the air.And moreover, people feel annoying when looking for a parking lot in the busy city center. So I prefer riding a bicycle to drive a car.

We are looking forward to a cleaner and better environment by changing our life style.

I think I need your help. Last Friday I placed an order for a laptop on line, and it is estimated to arrive to your address this Sunday. But you know I’m out with my parents, and we are going for a trip to London this weekend. So I’m writing to let you know that it’s not convenient for me to go back to receive the laptop at home. Can you do me the favor, please?

It’s a Lenovo laptop made in China. Please give it a careful checkup and make sure the package is well preserved and the machine operates well. Don’t hesitate to contact the seller if you find any damage. Thank you very much.

Best wishes!
