Despite the fact that it has never been seen almost everyone is familiar with the legendary unicorn(独角兽). Descriptions of unicorns have been found dating from ancient times. The great philosopher Aristotle theorized that there were two types of unicorn--- the so-called Indian Ass and the Oryx, a kind of antelope. Unicorns are often used in the logo of a noble family, town council or university as their special sign. Even Scotland is represented by a unicorn.
According to the legend, anyone attempting to catch a unicorn had to be extremely cautious as it has a reputation for being very fierce. A clever trick suggested by
unicorn-trappers, in order to catch this magnificent beast without being hurt by its horn, was for the hunter to stand in front of a tree and then to move quickly behind it as the unicorn charged. Hopefully, the creature could then be captured when its horn was stuck in the tree. When hollowed out and used as a drinking-cup, the unicorn‘s horn was said to have the power to offer protection against person. It was believed that nobody could be harmed-by drinking the contents of a unicorn‘s horn. Right up until the French Revolution in 1789, the French court was said to have used cups made of ―unicorn‖ horn in order to protect the king. In addition, the horn was said to have medicinal value, so much so that it could be sold for more than ten times the price of the same weight of gold. What, then, was ―unicorn‖ horn? We know at times the rhino(犀牛) was confused with this legendary creature. A drinking-cup supposedly made of ―unicorn‖ horn was discovered to be made of the horn of a rhino.

Outside her shabby cottage, old Mrs. Tailor was hanging out laundry on a wire line, unaware that some children lay hidden in the leaves of a nearby tree watching her every move. They were determined to find out if she really was a witch.
They watched as she took a broomstick to clean the dirt from her stone steps. But, much to their disappointment, she did not mount the broomstick and take flight. Suddenly, the old lady‘s work was interrupted by the cackling of her hen—a signal that an egg had been laid in the warm nest on top of the haystack.
The old broomstick was put aside as she hobbled off towards the haystack followed by Sooty, a black cat she had rescued from a fox trap some time back. With only three legs, it was hard for Sooty to keep up with the old lady. The cat provided proof—the children were sure that only a witch could own a black cat with three legs.
There, standing on a wooden box, was Mrs. Tailor, stretching out to gather her precious egg. Taking the egg in one of her hands, she began to climb down when, without warning, the box broke and the old lady fell.
―We have to got and help her,‖ whispered Amy.
―What if it is a trick?‖ replied Ben.
―Don‘t be silly, Ben. If she were a witch, she would have turned us into frogs already,‖ reasoned Meg. ―Come on Amy, let‘s go.‖ The girls climbed down the tree and ran all the way to the haystack.
Approaching carefully, they could see a wound on the old lady‘s face. She had knocked her head on a stone and her ankle was definitely broken. ―Go and get Dad,‖ Amy yelled to her brother. ―Tell him about the accident.‖

The surprising experiment I am about to describe proves that air is all around you and that it proves down upon you. Air pressure is a wonderful force. When you swim underwater, you can feel water push down your body. The air all around you does the same. However, your body is so used to it that you do not notice this. The pressure is caused by a layer of air called the atmosphere. This layer surrounds the Earth, extending to about five kilometers above the Earth‘s surface.
The following experiment is an easy one that you can do at home. But make sure that you are supervised, because you will need to use matches. Now foe the experiment!
What you need ·A hard-boiled egg without the shell ·A bottle with a neck slightly smaller than the egg ·A piece of paper ·A match Method
1) Check that the paper will sit firmly on the neck of the bottle. 2) Tear the paper into strips and put the strips into the bottle. 3) Light the paper by dropping a burning match into the bottle.
4) Quickly sit the egg on the neck of the bottle. Result
Astonishingly, the egg will be sucked into the bottle. Your friends will be amazed when you show them the experiment. But be careful when you handle matches.
Why it happened
As the paper burns, it needs oxygen and uses up the oxygen (air) in the bottle. The egg acts as a seal in the neck of the bottle, so no more air can get inside. This reduces the air pressure inside the bottle. The air pressure must equalize, so more air from outside must enter the bottle. The outside air pressure against the egg and then the egg is pushed into the bottle! The proves that air is all around and that it is pressing down on it.
60. Why is there the need to take care when you are doing the experiment? A. The bottle could break.
B. You need to light the paper with a match. C. The egg needs to be shelled.
D. The egg has to be perfectly placed on the neck of the bottle. 61. In the experiment, the burning inside the bottle can___. A. equalize the air pressure inside and outside B. make a seal in the neck of the bottle C. finish up the oxygen inside the bottle D. produce more oxygen inside the bottle 62. How did the egg put into the bottle?
A. The oxygen inside the bottle sucked the egg in. B. It became salt without the shell.
C. The neck of the bottle was wide enough.
D. The outside air pressure forced it into the bottle. 63. The experiment is carried cut to prove ______.
A. water pushes on your body when you swim underwater.
B. the earth is surrounded by a layer of air called the atmosphere. C. the pressure of air around us has a powerful force. D. the air pressure is not equalized around us.

Many people to newspaper and magazines to express their opinions. Letters to the editor must carry the writer full name, address and telephone number, although the information is not necessary for publication. This requirement to provide personal particulars is a clear indication that writers are held responsible for what they say. When a writer wants his voice heard. He needs to claim ownership of his voice. Responsibility is the name of the game.
―People today prefer living together to putting their signatures on a marriage certificate because they refuse to accept responsibility for the relationship,‖ said social worker Ken Yip, ―and this is what is causing a lot of family problems.‖ When we sign a paper, for example, a business contract or a bank document, the signature is symbol of consent, an agreement to take the matter seriously. Most governments and many organizations will not process writer‘s complaints if they do not bear the writer‘s signature. The absence of a signature, they explain, tells us that the writer cannot be too serious and therefore does not deserve a reply.
There are people who wish to remain anonymous(匿名的)for various reasons. Multi-billionaire Mr. King donates generously to charity several times a year. He gives simply
because he wants to help but not for the publicity his donations may bring, and he does not want his good deeds to make news. In other cases, people insist on anonymity because they are afraid of the consequences of revealing their identity. Crime witnesses may be willing to assist the police, but most are unwilling to give their names when reporting a crime.
Name or no name? The answer is very personal and lies in how much we want to get involved. We all have a name, it is a matter if responsibility to it when we make a statement, a claim or an accusation. We all want to honour our own name, and it is only by stamping our expression of an opinion with our own name that we honour what we say.
68. What does the writer mean by saying ―Responsibility is the name of the game‖? A. Writers need to provide their personal information in the game.
B. Publication must bear the writer‘s full name, address and phone number. C. Writers should be responsible for their names.
D. Names are required to indicate writers‘ responsibility for what they say.

A. honour and writers B. identity and signature C. signature and responsibility D. anonymity and signature E
New archaeological discovers suggest that trade between Europe and Asia along the Silk Road probably began in some form many countries earlier than once thought. The findings, coupled with a widening range of scientific and historical research could add a fascinating new page to the epic of the Silk Road.
The farest and most surprising discovery is pieces of silk found in the hair of and Egyptian mummy from about 1000 BC, long before regular traffic on the Silk Road and at least one thousand years before silk was previously thought to be used in Egypt. Other research may extend human activity along this route back even further, perhaps a million years to the migration of human ancestors into eastern Asia.
The official origin of East-West commerce along the road is usually placed in the late 2nd century BC which was the agent of the Chinese Emperor Wu-di returned from a dangerous secret mission(使命)across the desert into the remote high country of Central Asia. The agent, Zhang Qian, travelled as far as Afghanistan back knowledge of even more distant lands such as Persia, Syria and a place known as Lijion,. Histerents have called this one of the most important journeys in ancient times. His journey opened the way for what have been thought to be the first indirect contacts between the ancient world‘s two superpowers, China and Rome. Chinese silk, first traded to central Asian tribes for war horses and to the Parthians of old Pet la lu exchange for acrobats and ostrich eggs, was soon finding its way through a network of merchants to the luxury markets in Rome.
But the new discoveries show that Chinese silk was apparently present in the West long before the Han emperor started organized trade over the Silk Road. A
Andy rode slowly on his way to school, day-dreaming about the fishing trip that his father had promised him. He was so busy dreaming about all the fish he would catch that he was unaware of everything else around him.
He rode along until a strange sound drew him to the present. He came to a stop and looked curiously up to the heavens. What he saw shocked and terrified him. A huge swarm of bees filled the sky like a black cloud and the buzzing mass seemed to be heading angrily towards him.
With no time to waste, Andy sped off in the opposite direction, riding furiously—but without knowing how to escape the swarm. With a rapidly beating heart and his legs pumping furiously, he sped down the rough road. As the bees came closer, his panic increased. Andy knew that he was sensitive to bee stings(蜇). The last sting had landed him in hospital—and that was only one bee sting! He had been forced to stay in bed for two whole days. Suddenly, his father‘s words came to him. ―When you are in a tight situation, don‘t panic. Use your brain and think your way out of it. ‖
On a nearby hill, he could see smoke waving slowly skywards from the chimney of the Nelson family home. ―Bees don‘t like smoke, ‖ he thought. ―They couldn‘t get into the house. ‖
Andy raced towards the Nelson house, but the bees were gaining ground. Andy knew he could not reach the house in time. He estimated that the bees would catch up with him soon.
Suddenly, out of the corner of his eyes, he spotted a small dam used by Mr. Nelson to irrigate his vegetable garden. Off his bike and into the cool water he lived, disappearing below the surface and away from the savage insects. After holding his breath for as long as he could, Andy came up for air and noticed the bees had gone. Dragging himself out of the dam, he struggled up the hilly slope and rang the doorbell. Mrs. Nelson took him inside and rang his mother.
―You‘ll really need that fishing break to help you recover, ‖ laughed his mother with relief. ―Thank goodness you didn‘t panic!‖ But Andy did not hear her. He was dreaming once again of the fish he would catch tomorrow.
56. Why did Andy fail to notice the swarm of bees earlier? A. He was riding to school.

59. Which of the following can best describe Andy‘s escape from the bees? A. No pains, no gains. B. Once bitten, twice shy.
C. Where there is a will, there is a way. D. In time of danger, one’s mind works fast.

Kong Zi, also called Confucius (551—479 B.C.), and socrates (469—399 B.C.) lived only a hundred years apart, and during their lifetimes there was no contact between China and Greece, but it is interesting to look at how the world that each of these great philosophers came from shaped their ideas, and how these ideas in turn, shaped their societies.
Neither philosopher lived in times of peace, though there were more wars un Greece than in China. The Chinese states were very large and feudal, while the Greek city-states were small and urban. The urban environment in which Socrates lived allowed him to be more radical than Confucius. Unlike Confucius, Socrates was not asked by rules how to govern effectively. Thus, Socrates was able to be more idealistic, focusing on issues like freedom, and knowledge for its own sake. Confucius, on the other hand, advised those in government service, and many of his students went out to government service.
Confucius suggested the Golden Rule as a principle for the conduct of life: ―Do not do to others what you would not want others to do to you. ‖ He assumed that all men were equal at birth, though some bad more potential than others, and that it was knowledge that set men apart. Socrates focused on the individual, and thought that the greatest purpose of man was to seek wisdom. He believed that the superior class should rule the inferior (下层的) classes.
For Socrates, the family was of no importance, and the community of little concern. For Confucius, however, the family was the centre of the society, with family relations considered much more important than political relations.(www.nmet168.com) Both men are respected much more today than they were in their lifetimes. 64. Which of the following is TURE according to the first paragraph? A. Socrates and Confucius had much in common,
B. Confucius had much influence on Socrates‘ ideas. C. The societies ware influenced by the philosophers‘ ideas. D. There were cultural exchanges between China and Greece. 65. Socrates shared with Confucius the idea that ________. A. all men were equal when they were born
B. the lower classed should be ruled by the upper class C. the purpose of man was to seek freedom and wisdom
66. What made some people different from others according to Confucius? A. Family. B. Potential. C. Knowledge. D. Community. 67. This passage is organized in the pattern of ________.
A. time and events B. comparison and contrast C. cause and effect D. definition and classification
D
Modern inventions have speeded up people‘s loves amazingly. Motor-cars cover a hundred miles in little more than an hour, aircraft cross the world inside a day, while computers operate at lightning speed. Indeed, this love of speed seems never-ending. Every year motor-cars are produced which go even faster and each new computer boats (吹嘘) of saving precious seconds in handling tasks.
All this saves time, but at a price. When we lose or gain half a day in speeding across the world in an airplane, our bodies tell us so. We get the uncomfortable feeling known as jet-lag; our bodies feel that they have been left behind on another time zone. Again, spending too long at computers results in painful wrists and fingers. Mobile phones also have their dangers, according to some scientist; too much use may transmit harmful radiation into our brains, a consequence we do not like to think about.
However, what do we do with the time we have saved? Certainly not relax, or so it seems. We are so accustomed constant activity that we find it difficult to sit and do nothing or even just one thing at a time. Perhaps the days are long gone when we might listen quietly to a story on the radio, letting imagination take us into another world.
There was a time when some people‘s lives were devoted simply to the cultivation of the land or the care of cattle. No multi-tasking there; their lives went on at a much gentler pace, and in a familiar pattern. There is much that we might envy about a way of life like this. Yet before we do
so, we must think of the hard tasks our ancestor faced: they farmed with bare hands, often lived close to hunger, and had to fashion tools from wood and stone. Modern machinery has freed people from that primitive existence.
68. The new products become more and more time-saving because ________. A. our love of speed seems never-ending B. time is limited.
C. the prices are increasingly high. D. the manufactures boast a lot.
69. What does ―the days‖ in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Imaginary life B. Simple life in the past. C. Times of inventions D. Time for constant activity. 70. What is the author‘s attitude towards the modern technology? A. Critical B. Objective. C. Optimistic. D. Negative. 71. What does the passage mainly discuss? A. The present and past times. B. Machinery and human beings. C. Imaginations and inventions. D. Modern technology and its influence.

Every day we experience one of the wonders of the world around us without even realizing it. It is not the amazing complexity of television, nor the impressive technology of transport. The universal wonder we share and experience is our ability to make noise without mouths, and so transmit ideas and thoughts to each other‘s minds. This ability comes so naturally that we tend to forget what a miracle (奇迹) it is.
Obviously, the ability to talk is something that marks humans off from animal. Of course, some animals have powers just as amazing, Birds can fly thousands miles by \\observing positions of the stars in the sky in relation to the time of day and year. In Nature‘s talent show, humans are a species of animal that have developed their own special act. If we reduce it to basic terms, it‘s an ability for communicating information to others, by varying sounds we make as we breathe out.
Not that we don‘t have other powers of communication. Our facial expressions convey our emotions, such as anger, or joy, or disappointment. The way we hold our heads can indicate to others whether we are happy or sad. This is so-called ―body language‖. Bristling (直立的) fur is an unmistakable warning of attack among many animals. Similarly, the bowed head or drooping tail shows a readiness to take second place in any animal gathering.
Such a means of communication is a basic mechanism that animals, including human beings, instinctively acquire and display. Is the ability to speak just another sort of instinct? If so, how did human beings acquire this amazing skills? Biologist can readily indicate that particular area of our brain where speech mechanisms function, but this doesn‘t tell us how that part of our bodies originated in our biological history.(www.nmet168.com) 72. according to the passage, the wonder we take for granted is ________. A. our ability to use language B. the miracle of technology C. the amazing power of nature D. our ability to make noises with mouth
73. What feature of ―body language‖ mentioned in the passage is common to both human an animals?
A. Lifting heads when sad. B. Keeping long faces when angry. C. Bristling hair when ready to attack. D. Bowing heads when willing to obey. 74. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3? A. Body language is unique to humans. B. Animals express emotions just as humans do. C. Humans have other powers of communication. D. Humans are no different from animals to some degree. 75. This passage is mainly about ________. A. the development of body language. B. the special role humans play in nature C. the power to convey information to others
D. the difference between humans and animals in language use

―Mum, what does it mean when someone tells you that they have a skeleton (骨骼) in the closet (衣橱)?‖Jessica asked. ―A skeleton in the closet?‖ her mother paused thoughtfully, Well, it‘s something that you would rather not have anyone else know about. For example, if in the past, someone in Dad‘s family had been arrested for stealing a horse, it would be ?a skeleton in his family‘s closet‘. He really wouldn‘t want any neighbor to know about it.‖
―Why pick on my family?‖ Jessica‘s father said with anger. ―Your family history isn‘t so good, you know. Wasn‘t you great – great grandfather a prisoner who was transported to Australia for his crimes?‖ ―Yes, but people these days say that you are not a real Australian unless your ancestors arrived as prisoners.‖ ―Gosh, sorry I asked. I think I understand now,‖ Jessica cut in before things grew worse.
After dinner, the house was very quiet. Jessica‘s parents were still quite angry with each other. Her mother was ironing clothes and every now and then she glared at her husband, who hid behind his newspaper pretending to read. When she finished, she gathered the freshly pressed clothes in her arms and walked to Jessica‘s closet. Just as she opened the door and reached in to hang a skirt, a bony arm stuck out from the dark depths and a bundle of white bones fell to the floor. Jessica‘s mother sank into a faint (晕倒), waking only when Jessica put a cold, wet cloth on her forehead. She looked up to see the worried faces of her husband and daughter.
―What happened? Where am I?‖ she asked. ―You just destroyed the school‘s skeleton, Mum,‖ explained Jessica. ―I brought it home to help me with my health project. I meant to tell you, but it seemed that as soon as I mentioned skeletons and closets, it caused a problem between you and Dad.‖ Jessica looked in amazement as her parents began to laugh madly. ―They‘re both crazy,‖ she thought.

The garden city was largely the invention of Ebenezer Howard (1850 – 1928). After immigrating from England to the USA, and an unsuccessful attempt to make a living as a farmer, he moved to Chicago, where he saw the reconstruction of the city after the disastrous fire of 1871. In those days, it was nicknamed \for his later building plan of towns. Returning to London, Howard developed his design in the 1880s and 1890s, drawing on ideas that were popular at the time, but creating a unique combination of designs.
The nineteenth-century poor city was in many ways a terrible place, dirty and crowded; but it offered economic and social opportunities. At the same time, the British countryside was in fact equally unattractive: though it promised fresh air and nature, it suffered from agricultural depression(萧条) and it offered neither enough work and wages, nor much social life. Howard's idea was to combine the best of town and country in a new kind of settlement, the garden city. Howard's idea was that a group of people should set up a company, borrowing money to establish a garden city in the depressed countryside; far enough from existing cities to make sure that the land was bought at the bottom price.
Garden cities would provide a central public open space, radial avenues and connecting industries. They would be surrounded by a much larger area of green belt, also owned by the company, containing not merely farms but also some industrial institutions. As more and more people moved in, the garden city would reach its planned limit-Howard suggested 32,000 people; then, another would be started a short distance away. Thus, over time, there would develop a vast planned house collection, extending almost without limit; within it, each garden city would offer a wide rang of jobs and services, but each would also be connected to the others by a rapid transportation system, thus giving all the economic and social opportunities of a big city. 66.How did Howard get the name for his building plan of garden cities? A.Through his observation of the country life. B.Through the combination of different ideas. C.By taking other people's advice. D.By using the nickname of the reconstructed Chicago.
67.The underlined phrase \. A.making use of B.making comments on C.giving an explanation of D.giving a description of 68.According to Howard, garden cities should be built______. A.as far as possible from existing cities B.in the countryside where the land was cheap C.in the countryside where agriculture was developed D.near cities where employment opportunities already existed 69.What can we learn about garden cities from the last paragraph? A.Their number would continue to rise B.Each one would continue to become larger
C.People would live and work in the same place D.Each one would contain a certain type of business 70.What could be the best title for the passage? A.City and Countryside B.The Invention of the Garden City C.A New City in Chicago D.A Famous Garden City in England

Why should mankind explore space? Why should money, time and effort be spent exploring and researching something with so few apparent benefits? Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions and people on Earth? These are questions that, understandably, are very often asked.
Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup(基因构成)as human beings. What drove our ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? The wider the spread of a species, the better its chance of survival. Perhaps the best reason for exploring space is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible.
Nearly every successful civilization has explored, because by doing so, any dangers in surrounding areas can be identified and prepared for. Without knowledge, we may be completely destroyed by the danger. With knowledge, we can lessen its effects.
Exploration also allows minerals and other potential (潜在的)resources to be found.Even if we have no immediate need of them, they will perhaps be useful later. Resources may be more than physical possessions. Knowledge or techniques have been acquired through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or quality of our lives. We have already benefited from other spin-offs including improvements in earthquake prediction, in satellites for weather forecasting and in communications systems.Even non-stick pans and mirrored sunglasses are by-products (副产品)of technological developments in the space industry!
While many resources are spent on what seems a small return, the exploration of space allows creative, brave and intelligent members of our species to focus on what may serve to save us. While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The danger exists, but knowledge can help human being to survive. Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist.
While Earth is the only planet known to support life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to live on other planets. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future. 71.Why does the author mention the questions in Paragraph1? A.To express his doubts. B.To compare different ideas. C.To introduce points for discussion. D.To describe the conditions on Earth.
72.What is the reason for exploring space based on Paragraph2? A.Humans are nature-born to do so. B.Humans have the tendency to fight. C.Humans may find new sources of food. D.Humans don't like to stay in the same place.
73.The underlined word \. A.survival chances B.potential resources C.unexpected benefits D.physical possessions 74.What makes it possible for humans to live on other planets? A.Our genetic makeup. B.Resources on the earth. C.The adaptive ability of humans. D.By-products in space exploration. 75.Which of the statements can best sum un the passage? A.Space exploration has created many wonders. B.Space exploration provided the best value for money. C.Space exploration can benefit science and technology. D.Space exploration may help us avoid potential problems on Earth.

[1]It is now possible to watch live sport on television on any day of the week, and the current amount of reporting will undoubtedly increase further in years to come. This is certainly having an influence on the live sports events themselves, and there are both benefits and shortcomings to this.
[2]Why has there been such growth in televised sport? For one thing, with digital broadcasting, there are now many more TV channels than there were even ten years ago. Moreover, sport has become an important form of entertainment, appealing to both men and women.
[3]When are the benefits of this state of affairs? One obvious advantage to the profession is the addition of money provided by television companies. Large football clubs benefit financially from TV income and the top players can command very large salaries. Less popular sports also receive money that can be used in training and awareness-raising. What's more, there is a health benefit to some of the population, because through televised sport, more people have become interested in actually playing sport.

Fewer people attend live matches nowadays, preferring to watch from the comfort of their living room. And ticket prices have risen greatly.
