You are made of 73 percent water. You have 206 bones. There are about 60

muscles (肌肉) in your face; you use 20 of them to smile but 40 to frown. Your heart beats over 100,000 times each day. You really are amazing!

The human body is a complex machine. Most of the time we are unaware of what is

happening in our bodies; usually it is only when we get sick or feel pain that we notice. Many people do not take enough care of their complex machines. Bad habits like smoking, drinking too much alcohol, and eating junk food damage our bodies. Stress can also cause health problems. People who worry a lot or have busy jobs often don’t get enough sleep, or don’t eat properly. We also damage our bodies by playing sports or having accidents. A recent survey in the U.K. found that 14 percent of people had gone to a hospital Emergency Room in the previous three months. The two most common reasons were for injury and poisoning. Hospital patients were also treated for many other medical problems, ranging from colds to heart attacks.

Just like any machine, different body parts sometimes go wrong from old age. In

fact, a study in the U.S. found that 60 to 70 percent of all patients in the Emergency Room were aged 75 or over. Fortunately, older people who suffer from an illness or injury can now receive treatment to help extend their lives. It is now common for older people with damaged joints, for example, to have an operation to replace the old joint with a new one made of plastic or metal.

As with any machine, the better you take care of it, the longer it will last. Of course,

the best way to take care of your amazing machine is to eat the right food, do regular exercise, and get enough sleep. Oh, and don’t forget to smile! 45.The facts in Paragraph 1 are used to __________. A. explain how the human body can change

On December 5,1901,Walt Disney, the man who turned a mouse into one of the

world’s most beloved characters, was born in Chicago. Always the artist and businessman, he used to sell his drawings to neighbors to make extra money when growing up.

After serving in France during World War I, he move to Hollywood and set up a

cartoon studio with his brother Roy’s help. But the studio enjoyed little success before

1928—the year Walt created a character called Mickey Mouse, who appeared in the silent cartoon Plane Crazy.

By the late 1920s, sound was revolutionizing the movie business, and Walt Disney

was one of the first to use this new technology in Steamboat Willie, Mickey Mouse’s first starring role. Many more Mickey cartoons followed, and the little mouse became so popular throughout America that, in 1932, Walt was presented a special Oscar award for his creation. By 1935, Disney’s cartoon series included other popular characters, such as Donald Duck, Pluto and Goofy.

In 1937, Disney took a huge risk when he produced Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Previously, cartoons were usually 5 to 7 minutes long and shown in cinemas before the main movie. Snow White would be the world’s first movie-length cartoon film. Many predicted Walt would lose all his money and studio because audiences would not pay to see a cartoon. But the movie was a huge hit, making an unbelievable$4.2 million (almost $400 million in today’s money) in North America. Walt used this money to build a modern studio where he went on to make even more movie-length cartoons such as Pinocchio, Fantasia, and Bambi.

During World WarⅡ, Disney’s studio stopped making cartoons to help with the

war effort—mainly by producing army training films. But at the war’s end, the studio was back to action and produced many popular movies including Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan. Cinderella hit the theatres in 1948, and was Disney’s most successful movie since Snow White. But Walt Disney was only getting started. In 1955, he opened the first Disneyland and a year later he started making programs for a new industry called television. By the time he died in 1966, Disney had created an empire that continues to grow today. 49. How did Walt Disney make extra money in his early years? A. By making movies. B. By selling his drawings.

C. By designing theme parks. D. By drawing his neighbors. 50. Why was Walt Disney presented a special Oscar award? A. For the creation of Mickey Mouse. B. For the production of cartoon movies.

C. For using advanced technology in his movies. D. For making the most successful movie in history.

51. Why did many people think the movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs would fail? A. The story was not very interesting. B. The quality of the drawing was poor. C. People would not pay to watch a cartoon.

D. Children would not sit in the cinema for so long.

52. In what order did the following events happen in the story? a. Walt Disney started making TV programs. b. Walt Disney built a modern cartoon studio. c. Walt Disney served in France during the war. d. Walt Disney made training films for the army. e. Walt Disney opened a theme park for business. f. Walt Disney went to Hollywood and set up a studio.

Robin Lythe’s Cave, East Yorkshire

Looking for a sense of magic? Something mysterious with a little danger? Possibly

filled with ghosts (鬼魂)? And free of charge? Robin Lythe’s Cave will provide everything you need—if the sea level’s low. To get there, you walk down from the car park and take the road on the right. Watch out, in spring, for the hundreds of seabirds nesting on the rocks. If the sea level is low, you will be able to see a carve entrance. Climb up and enter. You are now inside the first section of the cave, called Flam borough Head. For centuries, this section has been famous for eating ships and smugglers (走私者) that sailed too close during high sea levels. At its height of greediness, between 1770 and 1806, it took one ship every 10 weeks on average.

The cave’s path then leads through a wet frightening passage into a wonderful

curving hall, 15 metres high. From there you can see a distant light, the sea. Smugglers used to bring their goods up here and hide them—French wine and tobacco mostly. At other times, locals would find bodies washed in during storms, and one, so they say, was Robin Lythe. Maybe he was a smuggler too, and maybe he is still around. There are regular reports of ghosts walking through the cave carrying bottles of wine.

When the sea level is very low, it’s safe to explore around the cave entrance area, but don’t stay too long!

Back on the cliff there are excellent walks south, past the lighthouse, to the long

beach that leads towards Bridling ton. Watch out for the short-eared owls hunting around here. There are mysteries here too: Dane’s Dyke, a huge wall-base that no one has ever properly explained; and the strange white stones on the beach—great for building an even stranger sand castle.

53. What’s the purpose of this passage? A. To introduce the history of the cave. B. To encourage tourists to visit the cave. C. To describe the secret stories of the cave. D. To warn visitors of the danger of the cave.

54. Which of the following statements about Robin Lythe’s Cave is true? A. No entrance fee is required. B. It’s a popular bird-watching site. C. It’s a great place to go swimming.

D. Ships are no longer allowed to sail near it. 55. What did smugglers mainly use the cave for? A. To hide from the police. B. To keep their boats.

C. To store their goods. D. To bury their dead.

56. When is the safest time to explore Robin Lythe’s Cave? A. At night. B. When there are no storms. C. In spring. D. When the sea level is low.
