News has just been received of an air crash in the north of England. The plane, which was on a charter (包租) flight from London to Carlisle, was carrying a party of businessmen on their way to a trade fair. It seems likely that the plane ran into a heavy fog as it was approaching Carlisle and was obliged to circle for some twenty minutes. Everything seemed to be going well. There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process. People have generally viewed

personal growth as an external result or a product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a rise, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language —— all these examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.

By contrast , the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way.The process is not the road itself, but the attitudes, feelings people have , and their caution or courage, as they meet with new experiences and unexpected difficulties. In this process, the journey never really ends;there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new challenges to accept. In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to face the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is necessary for our ability to grow.Do we see ourselves as quick and curious? If so, we tend to take more chances and be more open to unfamiliar experiences.Do we think we’re shy and indecisive? Then our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate, to move slowly, and we think we are slow to adapt change or that we’re not smart enough to deal with a new challenge. Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all.

These feelings of insecurity and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow.If we protect ourselves too much, then we stop growing. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making. 72. In the author’s eye, one who views personal growth as a process would ______.

A.succeed in climbing up the social ladder B.grow up from his own achievements C.face difficulties and take up challenges D.aim high and reach his goal each time 73.Which of the following can be viewed as the process of personal growing?

A.Our manager was always willing to accept new challenges. B.Jane won the first prize in the speech competition. C.Jerry picked up French during his stay in Paris. D.Father’s salary rose from 5, 000 to 7,000.

74.For personal growth, the author is in favor of all the following EXCEPT _______.

A.being curious about more changes B.being quick in self-adaptation

C.having an open mind to new experiences D.staying away from failures and challenges

75.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A.It is not so easy to measure personal growth.

B.To try and fail on the new road facing the unknown is unavoidable. C.There are only two ways to see a person’s growth.

D.If you are too shy to take any risks in life, you cannot grow up.

I have never heard about a “Fashion Week” outside of New York, London or Milan. But then one just happens to turn up in Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan. Actually, I’m ignorant of all those countries in Central Asia, whose names are always ending in \the introduction from Turusbek Mamashov, from the Tourism agency of the president of the Kyrgyz Republic, says, “Throughout this Fashion Week project, we need to create a revolution in the minds of our people, preparing the country for the international tourism market. It is an opportunity as well as an investment.” What he says is right. If you just give it a glimpse(一瞥), you’ll find out that the flavor(风情) of the Silk Road is still there.

As part of the route for Silk Road traders and migrating tribes through its epic(史诗的) history, Kyrgyzstan, like other Central Asian countries, is a vast place of desert, grassland and mountain ranges. It is not widely known that Kyrgyzstan is the Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai's birthplace.

Bishkek, the place holding Fashion Week, is the capital and industrial center of independent Kyrgyzstan. It is a relaxed, handsome place with wide streets and large amounts of greenery. Especially in the autumn of November, the yellow leaves falling everywhere make the whole city a legend in fall. The mountains are just at its rear, in that case a unique scene of picturesque beauty is composed by snow-white peaks, lakes and the urban Landscape.

Today, Ala-Too Square is the center of the poetic places worth seeing in Bishkek. The “White House,” the seat of the Kyrgyzstan Government, is just at the west of the square. Behind this is Panfilov Park, a great place to head for a national holiday. The State Museum of Fine Arts is opposite, which is also called the Gapar Aitiev Museum of Applied Arts, featuring Kyrgyz jewelry, rugs and works by local artists.

One of the joys besides the scenery is the openness of the people. Bishkek is a city without a big population but mainly good-natured people from many races, 47 percent are Russian and about a third are Kyrgyz. Most travelers vote Kyrgyzstan as the most appealing, accessible and welcoming of the former Soviet Central Asian republics. It is written by a tourist that Kyrgyzstan is the country Russians most desperately want to keep: hills always covered with grass and wild flowers. Kyrgyz men always ride a horse wearing a photogenic hat.

76. According to the passage, Kyrgyzstan used to be ___________.

A. an international fashion centre B. an important part of Silk Road C. the focus of the world

D. a vast desert land in Central Asia 77. The Fashion Week in Bishkek is supposed to __________.

A. start a revolution in Kyrgyzstan

B. attract foreign investment to Kyrgyzstan C. promote tourism in Kyrgyzstan D. celebrate the independence of Kyrgyzstan

78. Which of the statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage?

A. Bishkek is a crowded modern city surrounded by mountain ranges. B. Panfilov Park is a popular destination for local people during holidays. C. The majority of the population in Bishkek are Russian and Kyrgyz. D. The famous poet Li Bai is thought to have been born in Kyrgyzstan. 79. What is the most important message the author wants to convey in the passage?

A. Reflections and thoughts on the glorious history of the Silk Road. B. Feelings about the ongoing Fashion Week project in Bishkek. C. The geographic features and imposing history of Kyrgyzstan. D. The natural and cultural characteristics and attractions in Kyrgyzstan.

E

A. Causes of changes B. Increasing number of museums and visitors C. Museums getting closer to more spectators D. More chances for people to tour museums www.kaoshiyuan.com

中小学1对1课外辅导专家 E. New notions about the management of museums F. A place to visit 80. _____________D

Museums have changed. They are no longer places for the privileged few or for bored vacationers to visit on rainy days. Action and democracy are words used in descriptions of museums now. 81. _____________C

At a science museum in Ontario, Canada, you can feel your hair stand on end as harmless electricity passes through your body. At the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, you can look at 17th century instruments while listening to their music. At the Modern Museum in Sweden, you can put on costumes provided by the Stockholm Opera. As these examples show, museums are reaching out to new audiences, particularly the young, the poor, and the less educated members of the population. As a result, attendance is increasing. 82. ____________F

More and more, museums directors are realizing that people learn best when they can somehow become part of what they are seeing. In many science museum, for example, there are no guided tours. The visitor is encouraged to touch, listen, operat, and experiment so as to discover scientific principles for himself. He can have the experience of operating a spaceship or a computer. He can experiment with glass blowing and paper making. The purpose is not only to provide fun but also to help people feel at home in the world of science. The theory is that people who do not understand science will probably fear it, and those who fear science will not use it to best advantage. Many museums now provide educational services and children s departments. In addition to the usual displays, they also offer film showings and dance programs. Instead of being places that one “should” visit, they are places to enjoy. 83. ___________A

One cause of all these changes is the increase in wealth and leisure time. Another cause is the rising percentage of young people in the population. Many of these young people are college students or college graduates. They are better educated than their parents. They see things in a new and different way. They are not content to stand and look at works of are; they want art they can participate in. The same is true of science and history. In the US, certain groups who formerly were too poor to care about anything beyond the basic needs of daily life are now becoming curious about the world around them. The young people in these groups, like young people in general, have benefited from a better education than their parents received. All these groups, and the rest of the population as well, have been influenced by television, which has taught them about other places and other times.

84. ___________B

The effect of all this has been to change existing museums and to encourage the building of new ones. In the US and Canada alone, there are now more than 6,000 museums, almost twice as many as there were 25 years ago. About half of them are devoted to history, and the rest are evenly divided between the arts and sciences. The number of visitors, according to the American Association of museums, has risen to more than 700 million a year.
