For those that may not be familiar, there is such a thing as a bicycle grant(补助金). As a matter of fact, there are a number of organizations and programs offering bicycle grants to bicyclers all over the world. Now of course, you can‘t simply receive money, if you want to buy a new mountain bike. Usually, those awarded grants are working on improving the quality of life. People are excited about the bicycle grant. It is gaining attention of various organizations that want to help by providing the necessary funding. Eastman Kodak Company
Kodak has developed a fund called the ―Kodak American Greenways Awards‖. It is teaming up with the National Geographic Society and the Conservation Fund. Each year, they present grants as high as $2,500. The ―seed‖ grant award is awarded to organizations that focus on improving blueways, greenways, natural areas and trails. U.S. Government
The government has developed its own program for bicycle riders, called ―The U.S. Department of Transportation‘s Recreational Trails Program‖. The government‘s program is primarily focused on funding trail projects. The benefit of the fund is recreation, which includes bicycling, hiking, in-line skating,
snowmobiling, all-terrain vehicle (全地行车) riding and so forth. The great addition to the fund is that the fund is distributed to all the states. This means that everybody has the opportunity of receiving bicycle grants.
Bikes Belong Coalition
The Bikes Belong Coalition gives putting on more people on bicycles top priority. It advocates a better environment, recreation, sport, and better health, by way of bicycling. At the same time, it provides funding for supporting projects and bicycle facilities. Some of the projects it accepts are paved lanes and bike paths. Applications for its grants can be submitted by either a facility class or a supporting class. Also, the Bikes Belong Coalition is not quick to award bicycle grants to those that have been awarded in the past 3 years. This is partly due to its limited amount of funding. 56. What‘s the main purpose of the bicycle grants? A. To increase the sales of the bicycles C. To make bicyclers more popular
B. To advocate a healthy lifestyle D. To advertise some companies
57. Receivers of grants offered by the U.S. Government are _____________. A .winners

For those of us who sat through endless piano lessons as children, or spent summers learning a foreign language while our friends played outside, we probably never thanked our parents for those experiences. However, we weren‘t just put through endless extra-curricular activities just so our elders could enjoy some free time. In fact, the best time to learn sound-based skills such as languages or music is at a young age. As the brain is still developing, it‘s the perfect time to take in certain information.
But thanks to a new discovery by researchers at St Jude Children‘s Research Hospital in Memphis, US, adults may also be able to learn a new sound-based skill just as well as younger people can.
Using mice as test patients, the researchers found that the adult brain of both mice and humans – produces high levels of adenosine (腺甘酸), a chemical that slows down the ability to learn from sound. In younger brains, adenosine levels are much lower.
After finding a way to stop the brain from producing as much adenosine, the mice became more aware of sounds and were able to tell the difference between different notes played to them. This ability was previously unknown
B. states
C. riders
D. clubs
The researchers believe that if a drug is developed to slow down adenosine production in adult humans, it will unlock the ability to learn sound-based skills easier.
―These results offer a promising strategy to extend the same window in humans to acquire language or musical ability,‖ co-author Stanislav Zakharenko wrote in the study.
It‘s also believed that the findings could help people with serious medical conditions such as tinnitus (耳鸣), or those who have suffered a stroke .
If the researchers eventually go on to develop the drug, however, this probably won‘t mean that we could become masters of the violin or speak fluent Italian after taking a few pills.
Like everything in life worth doing, time, patience and hard work will probably still be needed if we want to take on a new sound-based skill.
58. The researchers discovered from their studies that a high level of adenosine _______. A. usually exists in younger brains B. made mice more sensitive to sounds
C. helped mice improve the ability to learn from sound D. stopped mice developing sound-based abilities easily 59. According to the text, the findings could help _______. A. children learn language more easily B. adults develop musical skills better C. people with tinnitus recover completely D. protect people against a stroke
60. What message does the author intend to convey in the last two paragraphs? A. He is pessimistic about the drug being developed. B. Everything worth doing deserves to be done well.
C. He is hopeful that the new drug will make it easy to master new skills.
D. There is no replacement for time and effort when it comes to learning new things.

For those who are too young to know what a Tamagotchi is, it‘s an egg-shaped plastic device with a black-and-white screen on which appears a little pixelated pet. ?
With the three buttons below the screen, you can feed the pet, care for it and clean up its mess. And just like a real pet, it gets sick and dies if neglected .
When it was first released by Japanese company Bandai in 1997, this virtual ―pocket pet‖ was so popular with schoolchildren that it was frequently sold out at stores all over the world. For many people, the Tamagotchi was their first ever experience of raising and caring for a ―pet‖.
A lot has certainly changed in the last 20 years – especially when it comes to technology – so would it be a good idea to reintroduce the Tamagotchi to today‘s world?
Bandai obviously thinks so since it‘s going to re-release it next month, marking the device‘s 20th anniversary. ―We‘re going after that nostalgia,‖ said Tara Badie, director of Tamagotchi‘s brand management, according to The Verge.
Nostalgia is all the rage these days. Just look at Nintendo‘s Pokemon Go – the 2016 smartphone game originated from its 1996 version – and Nokia‘s 2017 version of the 3310 – the mobile phone released in 2000 that it seems nearly everyone in the world owned. But these companies didn‘t just simply copy from the past – they managed to update the old version and adapt it for the modern world. With Pokemon Go, Nintendo successfully combined cutting-edge (前沿的) augmented reality (增强现实) technology with the game‘s original storyline.
―Pokemon Go tells us about the future of software and the nature of reality – and how they integrate (整合) into what we think of as entertainment,‖ technology writer Om Malik wrote on The New Yorker. And although Nokia‘s new 3310 stayed faithful to the original phone‘s design, it added a few modern features like a color screen, camera and internet access. It even kept the iconic (标志性的) game Snake, which many of today‘s adults would have spent hours playing as teenagers. But while nostalgia is certainly a selling point to many people, not everyone is a fan.
―I‘m so sick of nostalgia as a ploy (噱头) for profit. From the ?Make America Great Again‘ slogan, to the endless Star Wars and X-Men movies, we‘ve become a world obsessed with looking backward for lazy sources of joy,‖ wrote tech reporter Thomas Ricker on The Verge.
But will the magic of nostalgia work with the Tamagotchi? According to Julia Alexander, an editor for video game website Polygon, it seems pretty unlikely.
After trying the new product, Alexander soon found out that little has been changed since the original.
―I grew up and, unfortunately, the Tamagotchi didn‘t,‖ she wrote.
So when it comes to nostalgia, maybe the fond memories of our favorite childhood products are best left as that – fond memories.
61. What is the author‘s main purpose in writing this article? A. To promote the new Tamagotchi. B. To compare some hit video games.
C. To explore why ―nostalgia‖ is valued these days.
D. To analyse whether it was wise to bring the Tamagotchi back. 62. The underlined word ―nostalgia‖ in Paragraph 4 probably means ______. A. regret one has for the past B. the wish to take a risk
C. the desire for something exciting D. a longing for past happy memories
63. According to the text, the success of Pokemon Go and Nokia‘s new 3310 lies in the fact that they both ______.
A. use augmented reality technology
B. look exactly the same as the original version C. made creative adaptations from the old version D. changed what we think about entertainment
64. It can be inferred from the article that the author ______. A. isn‘t completely supportive of re-releasing old products B. believes that nostalgia is a great selling point C. believes the new Tamagotchi will appeal to the public D. loves products that can help revive her good memories

Dear Michelle,
I cannot find how my grandfather Anthony Peter Hellmann came to the US. or where he lived before 1900. I have his enlistment in the Spanish-American War and a 1900 census that lists his birthday as 1878 in Germany. I know that he immigrated in 1881 and died in 1918 but I have zero knowledge of his parents or siblings. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you!
Sandi Dear Sandi,
The two questions you are attempting to answer ─ how your grandfather migrated from Germany and where he lived before the Spanish-American War of 1898 ─ provide us with an opportunity to discuss what genealogists refer to as ― the wall ‖. As anybody searching for their ancestors discovers sooner or later, every search for our ancestors hits a wall ─ a place where the trail goes cold. And you seem to have hit two of these walls! Let‘s see if we can help you.
Our first rule is a simple one, but one that can be surprisingly useful: Start all over, and carefully review what you have already uncovered. Searching the records thoroughly you have already found can help you see if you missed something, or if more information can be obtained from them than you first realized.
Because you had mentioned his Spanish-American War Military Service Record, we decided to look more deeply into Anthony Hellmann‘s military service to see what we might find. Using Ancestry.com , we searched in a collection called U.S. Civil War Pension (抚恤金) Index and located an Anthony P. Hellmann and his widow (遗孀), Mary E. Hellmann. This might seem an unlikely place because of its Civil War title; however, its subtitle General Index to Pension Files, 1861-1934. The index covers pension applications filed for conflicts that occurred before WWI, which includes the Spanish-American War.
Anthony‘s pension file was a treasure of information, filled with 28 pages of affidavits (书面证词) from friends and relatives, as well as several original family documents. Who would have guessed that the only surviving copies of valuable family documents would be preserved in a pension application file? But here they were. To prove that she was in fact his widow, Mary Ellen included a transcript (文字记录) of Anthony. But it provided another bit of information that turned out to be essential link to Anthony‘s early life: the names of his parents, Simon Hellmann and Mary Mueller.
What‘s more, it stated that Anthony was born in landau, a city in the Bavarian province of Germany, an area known for its wine making. We now have learned the names of his parents and where he was born!
While most of the file focused on why the pension was valid and why the family needed help, the inclusion of Anthony and Mary‘s marriage and the baptismal records of their children made this invaluable information about the family. Their marriage and the baptism of their daughter, Mary Agnes Hellmann, were performed at the Roman Catholic Church in New York, by Reverend John P. McClancey, with the witness being relatives of Mary Ellen, but not Anthony‘s. It seems the community where the Hellmanns
lived included members of Mary Ellen‘s family but not necessarily Anthony‘s, which might suggest his family lived far away or had passed away. Page-by-page searches in city directories for Brooklyn and New York City between 1880 and 1898 for an Anthony, Anton, or Simon Hellmann were fruitless, though not surprisingly so. Immigrants were often very mobile, so Anthony‘s time in New York could have been very short.
Sometimes in family history the scenic route is the only way to reach your destination. Whilst specifics about Anthony‘s arrival and early years in America are still a mystery, ultimately, knowing the identity of his parents and where he was born in Europe will prove valuable in the long run as your search continues . We hope his information helps you in your search for your grandfather!
Michelle 65. What does the underlined part ―the wall‖ mean? A .The structure made of stone or brick.
B. Something that stops you from making progress. C. The state of defeat, failure, or ruin or the extreme position.
D. The thing preventing two groups of people from understanding each other. 66. What can we know about the first rule? A. It is useful but unnecessary B. It is much easy but practical
C. It needs a fresh start from the bottom
D. It requires hard work of organizing information
67. Why were Anthony‘s family documents included in his pension application file? A. To show the importance of the pension
B. To attach importance to the achievements of the family C. To offer the information of Anthony‘s parents D. To prove that the file was officially acceptable
68. After looking into Anthony Hellmann‘s military service, Michelle finds _________. A. just why Hellmanns needed help B. when Mary Hellmann was born and died C. the important connection to Anthony‘s early life D. the personal information of Anthony‘s relatives
69. What can be inferred from Paragraph 6 of the second letter? A. Most information in the file was not valuable. B. Anthony‘s family had all passed away then.
C. The Hellmanns lived near Mary Ellen‘s family for a short time. D. Anthony didn‘t didn‘t stay in Brooklyn or NYC between 1880 and 1898.
70. By ―Sometimes in family history the scenic route is the only way to reach your destination‖ , Michelle means __________.
A .it‘ll take longer to figure out Sandi‘s family history B. Sandi can take a shortcut to his family history
C. she has offered useful information and has solved Sandi‘s puzzle D. Sandi‘s family history is more glorious than that of others
第Ⅱ卷(非选择题 两部分 共35分)
第一节 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
In our day-to-day life, whether it is official, personal or social, we have to deal with complex situations. Some situations are easy to handle, but others are complex which disturb the peace of mind because our brain gets stuck on how best to handle such a state of affair. This is where analytical skills help us. The prime purpose of the analysis of any given situation is to get to know what resulted in the issue, to forecast the impact and to plan corrective strategies. So basically, analytical skill is to visualize a given situation, task, project or issue from several angles in order to break it up into small steps.
Below are different situations where our analytical skills are required. I shall give some advice in each category accordingly.
When running a large project : In this case you need to set a high level agenda for the staff to start working on WBS (Work Breakdown Structure ) and then assign each task to relevant resource. While making WBS you can have a meeting with your teammates.
When purchasing something : Let us take the example of a mobile phone. When you want to purchase a new mobile, you need to ask yourself: Do I really need to purchase a new phone, and what is my budget? Do I need one with a 4-inch screen or less? What other aspects do I need to consider? While trying to answer these questions, you will come up with the right mobile which is to be purchased.
When handling family conflicts: Being a sensitive subject, this is something where you need much
more than analytical skills. For each family member involved in the conflict, you have to do a study into his feelings, emotions, stress, age factor, and relationship with others. So in my opinion this is the most difficult part of practicing your analytical skills. You have to consistently guide everyone, following the forgive-and-forget policy. You have to calmly listen to each party and take adequate time to analyze all aspects.
In conclusion, analytical skills can make your life easier in almost all aspects of decision making or problem solving; however, it‘s not only the matter considering all the options and the inputs (输入), but it‘s also the matter of considering the weight of each option. For example, for a given situation you have two options having equal number of advantages or disadvantages . So in order to make decisions in such a situation, you have to consider the weight of each option.
How to develop analytical skills Introduction · Analytical skills play an important 71 in handling various complex situations in our life. · When analyzing any given situation, we should focus on the 72 and possible impact of the problem, and the 73 to the problem. Skills in different situations When handling family conflicts When making a purchase When 74 out a large project · 75 all your team members in working on WBS. · Assign each task to relevant resource. · You need to analyze your 76 before making your final decisions. · Take each family member‘s feelings, stress , etc, into 77 . · Encourage everyone to 78 each other or forget the conflicts. · Make the 79 comprehensively by listening calmly to each party and devoting lots of time. Conclusion Analytical skills help us live more easily by making us learn to evaluate the possible advantages or disadvantages of our 80 . 第二节 书面表达(满分25分)

Recently the world has witnessed the ―four new great inventions‖ of modern China, of which High Speed Railway plays the most important role in influencing and changing people‘s lives in different ways.
As we know, China has built the world‘s longest high-speed railway network. Featuring high speed, large passager-carrying capacity and assured safety, it consumes modest energy and resources and has greatly improved the transportation efficiency of the country. What‘s more, it makes our world smaller. With the high-speed railway, we can go almost anywhere in China conveniently whether on a trip or on a visit to our relatives and friends.
In conclusion, I am proud of the development of high-speed railway, which will no doubt put forward the development of China, but also strengthen the relationships with neighbouring countries. With living standards rising , it is only a matter of time before more and more people are able to pay to satisfy the need for speed.

附:听力原文: 例题:
M: Excuse me, can you tell me how much the shirt is? W: Yes, it‘s nine-fifteen.
(Text 1)
W: Mr. Compton, I‘d like to take tomorrow off if that‘s all right with you.
M: Well, let me take a look. Just a second. That‘s no problem, Susan. See you on Wednesday. (Text 2)
M: What did you do on the weekend?
W: Well, on Saturday I wanted to go for a picnic but it rained too much, so I washed my car instead. And on Sunday I worked in the morning then I played tennis with my husband.
(Text 3)
W: Could you please have my car ready at 5:00? I am to meet my friends at 7:00 at the station. M: Sure, the damage is not that serious. It should be ready before 5:00. (Text 4)
M: Could I get a ride with you to the concert tonight?
W: I can‘t go. But you might ask Betty. I think she is leaving at 7:30. (Text 5)
W: Good morning! The Hilton Hotel. How may I help you?
M: Good morning. I‘d like to book a single room for Friday night and Saturday night.
W: That‘s fine. The nightly rate is $50, including breakfast. But we offer a 20% discount for guests staying on Friday and Saturday. (Text 6)
W: So, you‘re a designer. That must be very interesting.
M: Yes, it is. Right now we‘re in the middle of a big project. We‘re designing a new shopping mall. W: Uh-huh. That sounds great.
M: Yes, it does. And the only trouble is the person I work with and we have quite different ideas of what it should look like.
W: Is that going to be a problem? M: I hope not. You see, I‘m his boss.
[来源学科网](Text 7)
W: So what was the damage?
M: They‘re gonna have to replace the cooker, two kitchen units and repaint one wall.
[来源:Zxxk.Com]W: Sounds pretty bad.
M: It could have been a lot worse.
W: Can I take a photo of you for the paper?
M: Do you have to? Oh, OK.
W: Thanks. It‘ll be front page news.
M: Oh dear! Haven‘t you got anything else to write about?
W: Not this week. There‘s not much happening on campus. I‘m joking. You‘re on Page 2. M: Thanks! (Text 8)
W: How was your meal today?
M: Well, the food was good as it always is. We were disappointed about the waiter‘s attitude tonight, though.
W: Oh, I‘m sorry to hear that. Would you like to fill out a comment card? Or I could get a manager for you. M: Not necessary. We know it‘s your peak time. We usually come a little earlier before the rush.
W: Well, I‘d like to make it up to you. I‘m going to give you a discount today. I‘ll take your drinks and dessert off the bill.
M: Oh, that would be nice. Thank you. W: Your satisfaction is important to us. (Text 9) M: Hello.
W: Hello, Sam. This is Emma Robert. Sorry to bother you, but I‘m having a small problem and I think you might be able to help me out.
M: My pleasure, Emma. What‘s up?
W: Well, you know, Julia and I moved into an off-campus apartment last year. We‘ve been happy with it until the past couple of months. M: Yeah? What happened?
W: Well, the washing machine broke down, so we reported it to Ms. Hansen, the owner. She said she‘d take care of it, but a month went by and nothing happened. M: Did you get in touch with her again?
W: I got a repairman to give me an estimate and I sent it to Ms. Hansen. I had the repair done before hearing from her. And I took away the cost from the rent check.
M: So what‘s the problem?
W: She called madly. She said she could have gotten the repair done with less money. Now she‘s threatening to expel(驱逐) us for not paying the full rent.
M: Hold on, Emma. It does sound pretty serious. But I?m sure you can all sit down and work this out. W: Well, you‘re studying at the law school, so I wonder if you would mind coming with Julia and me when we go to talk to Ms. Hansen. We‘re supposed to meet her at 7:00 tomorrow night.
M: Sure, I haven‘t studied a lot about contracts yet, but I‘d be glad to help you straighten things out. I‘ll stop by around 6:30.
W: That‘s great. Thanks, Sam. (Text 10)
W: Now it is time to welcome all the newcomers to the International School. You are all here to improve your business English skills. This weekend, which is your first in London, we‘ll offer to help you adapt to your new surroundings in an unusual and exciting way. So, starting Friday, in the morning we thought you‘d want to visit the city. We know that some of you have already visited a few museums in the neighborhood, so we‘ve organized a visit for those of you who are interested. At 3:00 pm, we‘ve planned games that‘ll help you get to know your fellow new comers. You‘ll all be rather tired after dinner so we thought you might like to see a film at 7:00 pm, which is free to all International School students. On Saturday, we have organized a day trip to visit the historical city of Bath. We?ll leave at 10:00 am on a bus that we‘ve rented for the day.
Everything will be provided for you, including lunch. On Sunday, we will leave it up to you how you spend the day, both the morning and the afternoon. OK, that‘s all for now. Thank you.
