第三部分 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题 2 分,满分 40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

The growing population of the elderly in the country is a frightening challenge for which we appear to be least prepared, if not fully unprepared.

According to a research, the current ratio(比率)of 16 elderly per 100 workers will double by 2025 and rise to 61 by 2050. By then China will have 438 million people aged 60 and over and 103 million aged 80 or over.

In a matter of 18 years, China has achieved an aging population ratio that developed countries reached in several decades or nearly a century. This means the challenge for China is far greater because we are becoming a graying society before getting rich.

What does it mean for the economy? We will face a shortage of labor, which will affect the productivity of the country. The vast aging population will also have a negative effect on the living standards of every Chinese as more government money would be spent on senior citizens.

Unfortunately, our country is ill prepared even for the aging population of today. For example, there are only a little over 2 million beds in various senior citizen homes, averaging 11 beds per 1,000 elderly.

Surveys in Shanghai show that the elderly long for more home service, community medical service and psychological and mental comfort, all of which are seriously lacking now.

We must spend more on pension (养老金) and include people in the vast countryside, where the challenge is even bigger. We should also build more public facilities for the elderly in local Such efforts and expenditure(支出)would mean less money for other things and possibly slower economic growth. But unless we act now with firmness and courage, we will be making a terrible mistake in dealing with one of the biggest coming challenges.

56. What will be the population of the elderly aged between 60 and 79 in China by the year 2050?

A. 438 million. B. 103 million. C. 541 million. D. 335 million.

57. The aging problem is a far greater challenge for China because ___.

A. the developed countries have already become rich

B. the aging population increased very slowly in the western country

C. China will have to face such a problem in a short period

D. China will have to deal with such a problem when it’s not developed

58. The following are the negative results of an aging population EXCEPT___.

A. increasing income of employees

B. lowering people’s living standards

C. lowering the speed of development

D. increasing government expenditure

59. The underlined word “list” in Paragraph 7 refers to “___”.

A. the number of facilities for the old

B. the number of the increasing aging people

C. programs to be carried out for senior citizens

D. challenges together with the aging problem

60. What’s the author’s main purpose in writing this article?

Carrots come in many different sizes and shapes. For example, Paris Market carrots are about five centimeters around. Imperator carrots are thin and about twenty-five centimeters long. And Belgian White carrots are, as their name suggests, white.

For the best results, carrots should be grown in sandy soil that does not hold water for a long time. The soil also should have no rocks. To prepare your garden for carrots, dig up the soil, loosen it and turn it over. Then, mix in some plant material or animal fertilizer. Weather, soil conditions and age will affect the way carrots taste. Experts say warm days, cool nights and a medium soil temperature are the best conditions for growing carrots that taste great. Carrots need time to develop their full sugar content. This gives them their taste. If they are harvested too early, they will not have enough sugar. But carrots lose their sweetness if you wait too long to dig them out. The best way to judge if a carrot is ready to be harvested is by its color. Usually, the brighter the color, the better the taste.

Many people do not know that carrots can be grown during the winter months. If the winter is not cold enough to freeze the ground, you can grow and harvest carrots the same way as during the summer months. If the ground does freeze in your part of the world, simply cover your carrot garden with a thick layer of leaves or straw. This will prevent the ground from freezing. You can remove the ground cover and harvest the carrots as needed.

Carrots are one of the world’s most popular vegetables. They can be cooked and prepared many different ways. Or, once they are washed, they can be eaten just as they come out of the ground.

( ) 61. Carrots vary in size, shape and ______.

A. color B. length C. habitat D. weight

( ) 62. The soil for the growth of carrots should first be ______.

A. fertile B. sandy C. dry D. mixed

A. before carrots are harvested B. when the carrots are young

( ) 65. Fully grown carrots with great taste are those ______.

A. that are just dug out of the soil B. that are planted in winter

C. that look brightest in colour D. that are prepared just by washing C

John Barnes’ Mother of Storms, published by Tor Books, starts out slow, with many characters being introduced, and this becomes a unnecessarily long process. John Barnes all the way along gives us a little science, how dangerous storms develop, and more. The imaginary centers around small nuclear bombs are set off in the Artic ocean in the year 2028, letting go methane, which is a strong greenhouse gas, which in turn heats the oceans and atmosphere, and you can expect what happens after that in our life.

青州一中高三检测题

John Barnes is expert at character development and uses it to great effect here; the plot is also excellent, although at times the writing is dull and boring, with an unclear writing style. Much of the book might be a tiresome read, perhaps with too many characters and too many pages; it could easily be 80 pages shorter. It does become more interesting after page 150 or so, and there is much interesting food for thought on the disastrous results that can be foreseen.

In addition to the topic of weather and hurricanes, Barnes gives his readers here some idea what it may someday be like to computerize your attempts, which of course is in advance to what is available today; this alone is probably worth the cost to read this book, but again, he gives too much tasteless and confusing descriptions to some scenes. Also, Barnes frequently uses rude and bad-mannered subjects, so watch out if you tend to be hurt or angry.

Besides being an excellent story, it is a timely warning. The effects of global warming don't sound like fun. They probably won't be exactly as Barnes describes, of course, but they will be very similar, and very disastrous, if we fail to cut down sufficiently on destruction and pollution.

( )66. According to the review, the beginning of the book ______.

A. is hard to understand B. misleads readers

C. needs shortening D. can be cut off

( )67. The awful result of setting off the small nuclear bombs in the Arctic Ocean is that ______.

A. poisonous gases will be produced

B. methane will need to be controlled

C. the earth will need more greenhouses

D. the earth will be heated up

( )68. By “…expert at character development”, the author of the passage means that ______.

A. John Barnes has some good characteristics for people to appreciate

B. John Barnes has good skills in creating characters in his novel

C. John Barnes creates too many characters for readers to understand

D. the characters John Barnes creates develop into experts

( )69. After page 150 or so, some scenes______.

A. help people to realize future disasters and are interesting as well

B. are good for people, especially for those who work with their mind

C. foresee some disasters both frightening and encouraging

D. foresee some disasters that we are having today

( )70. According to Paragraph 3, the following statements are false except ______.

A. Barnes shows the importance of computers in the future.

B. It is possible to computerize people’s attempts at present.

C. The most valuable is Barnes’ imaginary scenes about computerizing people’s attempts.

D. Some people may dislike some of the expressions or subjects in the book.

As for me, the Coming of Age Ceremony was a really fun and nice memory of the special year. During that ceremony, one student from each class gave a speech on the topic “At the age of 18”. Besides, there was also a singing competition among classes. It was indeed a precious, impressive and fun experience that we worked together on the song. Each class put a lot of creative thought into it, whether on make-up or dresses, or musical instruments. Some classes brought sticks that gave weak colourful light to show the structure of a birthday cake during the performance; others combined a wonderful dance performance with the song. At the end of the

contest, each class teacher was asked to say a few words and some of them even sang songs as we asked. For the first time, we knew that many of them had beautiful voices!

Another highlighted event is the commencement. There were lots of touching as well as exciting moments during it. We first watched a video looking back on all the class activities we were in together, such as the very first school assembly, military training and the farm trip. Watching that video was both fun and moving. All of us took those for occurrences of yesterday and so soon we were saying goodbye to each other. Later all the class teachers gave us their best wishes on our future study and life. It was at that moment that we found we were so attached to our teachers and the school.

Instead of saying “graduation ceremony”, people in the West use the word “commencement”, meaning “a beginning”, to name this occasion. True, the commencement symbolizes a turning point—while saying goodbye to our high school, we're journeying into another period of our life!

( )71. The Coming of Age Ceremony was most probably held ______.

A. in school time in a classroom B. on one morning in one classroom

C. on one evening in the open air D. on one evening in the teachers’ offices

( )72. Each class put a lot of creative thought into the singing competition because ______.

A. it needed a large amount of team work

B. there would be no such ceremony without it

C. make-up or dresses, or musical instruments required careful preparations

D. each class wanted to get high a score and impress the other classes

( )73. Which of the following is an unnecessary part of the Coming of Age Ceremony?

A. Teachers’ singing. B. Teachers’ words.

C. Singing competition D. Students’ speeches.

( )74. The word “assembly” in the passage is closest in meaning to ______.

A. impression B. notice C. meal D. meeting

( )75. Unlike people in the West, we adopt the expression “graduation ceremony” to indicate

______.

A. a turning point B. a successful ending

C. a new journey D. a great challenge

Never underestimate small talk -- even though many people fear it, or think it's silly, boring or surface.

"If you think conversation is basically about exchanging information, then small talk looks like a waste of time and probably lies," says David Weinberger, a former philosophy professor and

Think of it as a sorting system, by which you identify the wheat and remove the chaff(谷壳). You will listen to boring street talk. You can always excuse yourself after a few minutes, and you'll have learned something valuable.

"In small talk, we express ourselves in the details of what we talk about, the words we use, the ones we don't, how far we lean forward, how tentatively(试验性地) or aggressively we probe for shared ground," Weinberger posted last month in his Internet newsletter. A possible version:

Is the dragon a good national symbol?

The Chinese have long seen the dragon as the symbol of the country. As a mythical creature, the dragon is deeply rooted in Chinese culture.

While Chinese believe dragons bring prosperity and good fortune, however, the creature is regarded differently in Western countries. More often than not, dragons in Western literature are presented as monsters against which the hero must battle to save a princess.

China is more engaged in foreign affairs because of its increasing strength, especially after the 2008 Olympic Games. Some people assume that it is not suitable to see the dragon as the symbol of china because of its evil image in Western culture, thinking it may leave Westerners a negative impression of china.

As far as I’m concerned, there are totally different meanings between the Chinese and the Western “dragon”, so it is not a bit necessary to change our symbol just because of the others’ understanding. For thousands of years, the dragon has run into many phases of China’s social and political life as well as art and literature. To solve the problem, translating it into another English word such as “long” or “loong” may be a good idea. But the most important is that we should try every possible means to introduce the image of “Chinese dragon” to foreigners, for example TV, films ,advertisements and some other cultural activities,to make them learn more about “dragon” and Chinese culture.
