Pills to make you smarter

There is a theory that there is no such things as intelligence, that IQ tests are weapons of racism and repression, and that the social environment determines all.

That theory will be seriously challenged this week when psychologists and geneticists gather in Sydney for the 23rd annual conference of the BGA, an association which was formed when psychologists began to ask whether similar behavior among family members could be due to genetic rather than social factors.

Some of the most exciting research in the field comes from Con Stough from Auckland University, who has managed to reduce the concept of intelligence to a simple matter of nerves, chemicals, lights, buttons, lines and sounds.

Stough says the view that intelligence has its basis in biology fits in well with the theory that it is largely genetically determined. Various programs in the US have tried to improve children’s intelligence by improving their environment, but most have been failures.”Most of our intelligence is settled within the first year of life”, he says.

However, there are other views. American researchers believe that our genes determine the potential for intelligence rather than intelligence itself, and, given the right environment, we can fulfill this potential.

AS usual, the conference will see plenty of talk about rodents. It brings you down to earth to realize that we need to watch rats when we want to understand humans.
