For some people, simply being able to live their life 41 a minimum of misery and suffering is considered 42 .Think of the peace of mind of the poor shepherd who 43 his sheep, enjoys his frugal life with his family in the beauty of 44 , and who is respected because he does a good job of 45 the goals expected of and accepted by him and his society. Pliladelphia on Thursday opened a public high school where students work on wireless laptops, teachers replace traditional subjects with real-world topics and parents can track their children’s work on the Internet.

Called “The School of the future” and created with help from software giant Microsoft, it is believed to be the first in the world to combine innovative teaching methods with the latest technology.

The school, which cost the school district $63 million to build, is free and has no entrance exams. The 170 students in the lowest ninth-grade class were selected by lottery from 1,500 applicants.

Three-quarters of the students come from the surrounding West Philadelphia neighborhood; 95 percent of the students are black, and about 85 percent come from low-income families, the school district said.

Philadelphia School District Chief Executive Paul Vallas told students they would be watched closely by other schools around the world.

“You have become instant role models,” Vallas said. “People are going to be watching you.” Students still sit in classrooms, but lessons rely heavily on information found on the Internet. Students will be allowed to learn at their own pace. Homework is done on the computer and sent to the teacher for grading and parents can access the school’s network to read the teacher’s feedback on their children’s progress.

“Traditional education is obsolete(陈旧的) and fails to teach students the skills of problem-solving , critical thinking and effective communication, which they need to succeed in the 21 st century,” principal Shirley Grover said in an interview.

David Terry, 14, said he was hoping to “turn over a new leaf ” after problems in his previous school left him with an “average to really bad ” academic record.

“This is a great opportunity for me,” he said. “in other schools, I would not get this kind of education.”

The idea of fighting a noise by making more noise sounds strange, but that’s exactly what motor engineers are doing in Germany and some other countries.

Carmaker’s research and development laboratories have already proved that mixing in more noise with the help of loudspeakers can reduce the unwanted noise.

Physicists have known about the technique for a long time. Sound is made up of pressure waves in the air. If two sound waves of the same frequency mix so that the highest point of one wave happens at the same time with the lowest point of the other wave, the result is no sound. Therefore, by producing a perfect copy of the noise and delaying it by half a wave cycle( 周期 ), we can kill the unwanted noise. Using this technique many carmakers are racing to develop noise-killing systems both inside and outside the cars.

Another good thing about the use or noise killing systems is that it saves the need for a silencer,

which not only reduces the weight of a car, but also makes the motor burn less oil and work better.

Some engineers believe that the noise-killing system will be used in most cars in 1996. But the carmakers haven’t decided if they will put it into production because it would add several hundred dollars to the cost of their cars.

60. Which of the following gives a general idea of how the noise-killing system works? A. By producing pressure waves going in the opposite direction.

B. By mixing high frequency sound waves with low frequency sound waves. C. By making copies of the unwanted sound waves and letting them out a little later. D. By mixing new sound waves with the noise and sending them out together. 61. Besides its main function, the noise-killing system can . A. make a car lighter B. make a car quieter

C. reduce the cost of a silencer D. improve the performance of a silencer 62. The noise-killing system is not yet popular mainly because .

A. it increases the cost of car production B. carmakers are not sure if it is necessary C. it is still being tried out D. people still have their doubts

What science fiction (story) , once told of other worlds far away, is now a fact. Astronomers ( experts at the science of the universe ) prove another solar ( of the sun ) system like ours with some planets in the constellation( 星座 ) Andromeda ( 仙女座 ) .

Geoffrey Marcy is a professor of astronomy and physics at San Francisco State University and says, “What we have found now , for the first time ever, is indeed a fully-grown system of planets Around the star Upsilon Andromeda. It appears to have three planets, one close in, one at a middle distance, and one farther out.” The star is slightly larger than our sun. The planets are huge, like our Jupiter(木星座)

Marcy’s partner in this research , Debra Fischer, describes the solar system, “Here’s the inner planet that goes around every 46 days, the middle planet that goes around every 242 days, and then the outer planet that goes around every three and a half to four years.”

Astronomically, it’s not far away, 44 light years . The sun of that solar system, Upsilon Andromeda, is so near and bright that it can be seen by using no equipment during summer and fall.

For twelve years astronomers searched the skies in the belief that if our sun has planets around it, surely others do, too. Geoffrey Marcy says, “And then starting three and a half years ago, we began

finding for the first time planets singly, one planet here around one star.”

“When I look up at the stars now at night, I can imagine easily that every one of them has planets around them,” says Debra Fischer.

It was a tremble (shaking ) in the star that led Marcy to the planets. “The star rocks around due to the gravity of the planet much like a dog owner gets pulled around by a little dog.”

Can they support life? We don’t know, because present technology is not advanced enough to determine what the planets are made of. “That”, Marcy says , “is astronomy’s next challenge”.

63. What’s the relation between Andromeda (A) ,Upsilon Andromeda system (U) and the mentioned planets (P) ?

64. According to Debra Fischer, in the new solar system, . A. the larger a planet is, the shorter it takes to go around the star.

B. it takes all the planets around three and a half to four years to go around the star C. the planets move around the star at uneven speeds

D. the farther a planet is from the star, the longer it takes to go around the star 65. What led to Marcy’s discovery of the planets?

A. The tremble of Upsilon Andromeda. B. That any planet has gravity.

C. That he believes any star has its planets. D. that he found a dog owner was pulled by his dog. 66. We can infer that the scientists are . A. to find means to communicate with the living beings on the planets B. to find means to travel to the planets

C. soon to be able to answer the question of whether there is life on these planets D. to find out whether the planets can support life.

The English, as a race, are very different in many ways from all other nationalities, including their closest neighbors, the French, the Belgium and the Dutch. It is claimed that living on an island separated from the rest of Europe has much to do with it. Whatever the reasons are, it may be fairly stated that the

Englishman has developed many attitudes and habits which distinguish him from other nationalities.

Broadly speaking , the Englishman is a quiet, shy , reserved person who is fully relaxed only among people he knows well, In the presence of strangers or foreigners he often seems restrained, even embarrassed. You have only to witness a city train any morning or evening to see the truth of this. Serious looking businessmen and women sit reading their newspapers or having a light sleep in a corner, no one speaks . In fact, to do so would seem most unusual. An Englishman, Pretending to be giving advice to overseas visitors, once suggested, “On entering a railway carriage, shake hands with all the passengers.” Needless to say, he was not being serious. There is an unwritten but clearly understood code of behavior which, if broken, makes the person immediately suspected( 怀疑 )”.

In many parts of the world it is quite normal to show openly extremes of enthusiasm, emotion, excitement, etc, often accompanied by appropriate gesture. The Englishman is somewhat different. Of course, an Englishman feels no less deeply than anyone of a different nationality, but he tends to display his feelings far less. This is reflected in his use of language. Imagine a man commenting on the great beauty of a young girl. Whereas a more emotional man might describe her state “Oh, she’s all right. ” An Englishman who has seen a highly successful and enjoyable film recommends(推荐) it to a friend by commenting, “It’s not bad you know ”, or on seeing very unusual scenery he might convey( 表达 ) his pleasure by saying, “Nice, yes, very nice.” The overseas visitor must not be disappointed by this apparent lack of interest and involvement. Instead, he must realize that “all right,” “not bad” and “nice” very often have the sense of “first-class”, “excellent”, “beautiful”. This use of language of a unique style, particularly common in England is known as restrained statement.

67. From the passage people can infer that the English are different from other nationalities mainly in . A. attitude B. character C. habits D. all the above 68. If one doesn’t want to be suspected in public, he had better . A. follow the English code of behavior B. shake hands with all the people he meets C. talk with others D. keep quiet

69. The underlined word “restrained” in paragraph 2 most probably means . A. friendly and kind B. polite and graceful C. afraid and frightened D. calm and controlled 70. According to the passage, the Englishman . A. has less feelings than other nationalities B. has emotions as deep as any other nationalities
