Besides, people in Jinan are friendly and kind. Mountain Tai is another attractive destination. Time permitting, you can experience different cultures and enjoy various local snacks.

The woman was slowly seated in a wheelchair with the help of the nurses. “How much do I owe you?” she asked eagerly, reaching into her purse. “Nothing,” I said. “But you have to make a living,” she answered. “Oh, there are other passengers,”

I responded. The old woman offered his heartfelt gratitude once again.

Text 1

W: Welcome back! Did you have a nice summer vacation?

M: Yes. We went to Rome first and stayed there for about two weeks. Then we went to China and

after that Thailand. It was really a wonderful trip.

Text 2

M: Want to join me? I’m g oing to that store around the corner. I want to buy a T-shirt there.

W: Why go there? Everything there is too expensive. There is a store a little further down with

much better and cheaper things.

Text 3

M: Where is the report I asked you to finish for today? I need it at the board meeting this

afternoon.

W: It’s on my desk, Mr Brown. I’ll go and get it for you right away.

Text 4

M: Professor Brown asked me to go to his office after class.

W: Then I don’t think you’ll be able to get to the cinema by 7 tonight.

M: Yes. I’m sorry for the unexpected change.

M: Hi! I read about your house rental online and I’m interested. Could you fill me in with a few more details?

W: Sure. What do you want to know about?

M: Are water and electricity included in the rent?

W: No, but the wireless Internet is free.

Text 6

W: I heard Doug got hurt yesterday afternoon. What happened?

M: Well, there was a tree that fell near his house during that big snowstorm yesterday. When he tried to remove it, part of it fell on his foot.

W: That sounds painful.

M: Yeah, it was. He had to go to the hospital right away. Luckily, no bones were brok en, but he’ll have to stay there for a few days before he can come back home.

W: He really shouldn’t have tried to take care of that tree by himself. So who ended up removing the tree?

M: I called some friends over to help, and we removed it together. This time nobody got hurt.

M: Hello. I’d like to get a return ticket to Cambridge.

W: We have Saver Return, Standard Open Return and First Open Return. What kind do you want? M: I want the cheapest one, please.

W: That’s Saver Return. It costs 27.20 pounds.

M: OK. Here’s 30 pounds.

W: Here is your change and your ticket.

M: Um, what time is the next train?

W: 1:12 pm.

M: And what time will it arrive in Cambridge?

W: Arriving in Cambridge at 2:21 pm.

M: Have you ever dreamed of going into space, Mary?

W: Yes. One of my heros is Sally Ride. Traveling into space was always her dream.

M: When did she realize her dream?

W: On June 18, 1983. She was the first American woman to travel into space.

M: Was she an astronaut with NASA?

W: Yes. She studied physics in college and graduate school, and after that she was accepted into NASA’s astronaut training program. She traveled into space for the first time in 1983, and then traveled to space again the following year.

M: What did she do after she left NASA?

W: Ride dedicated her time to getting kids interested in science, technology, engineering and math.

M: Why did she do that?

W: She wanted to encourage American kids to become more interested in STEM subjects. You know test scores show that US students are falling behind in STEM subjects compared to kids in other countries.

Text 9

W: Brian, which of the awards you’ve won is the most important to you?

M: The Caldecott Medal.

W: Which of your books earned you that award?

M: The Invention of Hugo Cabret.

W: I’ve read some books that have won the Caldecott Medal, and most of them are short picture 只要坚持梦想终会实现 4

books like Where the Wild Things Are. But your book is 526 pages long — with only 284 of those pages given to pictures.

M: You’re right. If you took all the books that had won the Caldecott Medal before my book and put them all together, it would be about as long as my book. My book is the first novel to win this award.

W: That’s really amazing. So what was the first award that you won?

M: The very first award I ever won was called the Lemme Award.

W: What’s the Lemme Award?

M: It was from the Helen Lemme Elementary School, in Iowa City, Iowa. I was given the award because the kids at that school loved my book The Houdini Box. This award was very important to me, because it encouraged me to keep writing.

Text 10

When Ohio’s health department released birth records last month for those adopted over a period of more than three decades, a spokesman called it a chance for people to possibly reconnect with their sisters and brothers or their birth parents.

For one woman, both her birth mom and sister were much closer than anyone could have guessed. The woman, 38, had been working with her mother for four years before the two found out about it. Her sister works at the same company.

The path to discovery began on Monday, when the woman’s birth record arrived in the mail. She learned that her mother’s name was Francine Simmons, and she looked up Simmons’ Facebook profile. It showed her place of employment. Her mother works at the front desk. The two women live only six minutes apart. The two shared a tearful phone call soon afterward.

Simmons had always wanted to meet her daughter, who she gave up at age 15. She didn’t even get to name her when she gave her up, but she had a name for her lost daughter in her heart all these years.
