Unit1

One’s listening comprehension and speaking ability grow by practice. To achieve good results in training aural comprehension at college, it is necessary to practice listening to English on a regular basis. I will start by listening to tapes based on the materials we use in class. Later, when I am more advanced, listening to taped lectures, stories, and news reports will be a good way to improve my ear. And I will develop my speaking ability by taking an active part in classroom activities and talking with my fellow students after class. Besides, I will try to find native speakers on my campus and make friends with them. A sustained friendship with people from English-speaking countries will provide the motivation to communicate and help improve my spoken English slowly but steadily.

Unit4

Watching television may do us more harm than good. True, television provides some entertainment. It may even serve as an electronic baby-sitter. But television takes so much of our free time that we don't even have time to talk, even among family members. In fact, many of today's social problems, such as the widening generation gap and the rising divorce rate, are caused by this lack of communication. What's more, too much television viewing has robbed our children of their precious time for reading, thus producing a new illiterate generation. Educators report that some college freshmen who have grown up with television can barely write an English letter, let alone an English story or a personal essay. They are so accustomed to passive television viewing that their imagination is dulled and their creativity killed. If this is allowed to continue, our young people will have a doubtful future and our nation will sooner or later be left behind in the global race to get ahead in economic prosperity and in science and technology.

Unit5

There are several factors leading to Linda Stafford's success as a writer. Firstly, her determination to write her own books certainly served to help her achieve her dream of becoming a writer. From the start, she refused to believe only geniuses can become writers. In her opinion, geniuses, degrees and qualifications to be a writer do not count. What does count is your determination. As she puts it, anyone can write a book if they set their mind on it. So, when her teacher and fellow students laughed at her, she remained firm in her decision to write her own books. Secondly, her strong love for writing was an important factor in her success as a writer. She likes writing what she feels, and she thinks of writing as fun. Finally, it seems to me that practice played a part. While at high school she kept writing poems, letters, jokes and recipes. After she got married and had four children, she still tried to find time to write one book after another. Needless to say, the more she practiced, the better she wrote. It is practice that makes perfect.

Unit8

With Christmas approaching, I looked everywhere in search of a present for my son. I wanted something big for him, but the few dollars I had managed to scrape together couldn't go very far. Then I remembered when we were shopping in Baltimore Street the other day, he had looked for a long time at a second-hand bicycle with balloon tires. The next day I went back secretly and asked about the price. It was something like $15. Luckily, the shop owner said if I made a down payment of 5 dollars, I could pay the rest in installments. I accepted the deal instantly, wheeled the bike

back and hid it in my bedroom. On Christmas morning, the whole family gathered around the Christmas tree. As my son tore open the brightly wrapped package and pulled out a shirt and a necktie, I saw bitter disappointment in his face. I knew the critical moment had come. I snapped my fingers and said, \and came back with the big black two-wheeler. My son was astonished. At the sight of the bike, he could no longer hold back his emotions. He suddenly threw out his arms, hugged me and kissed me. I was quite startled, but had never felt so happy as I did that day.

Unit9

Venusian scientists were very excited about a satellite they had landed on the planet Earth. The satellite had been sending back valuable information from a place called Manhattan. After studying the signals and photographs, the scientists have discovered some important facts about the Earth. For one thing, it is impossible for anything to grow on Earth because its surface is made up of solid concrete. For another, the atmosphere is full of deadly gases. Clearly no one can stay alive if he has to breathe this air. Also, a dark black could, known as the Consolidated Edison Belt, hovers over the Earth. It threatens all life forms. Finally, the water on Earth is so polluted that no humans or animals could possibly drink it. Based on these discoveries, Venusian scientists have concluded that there is no life on Earth.
