On her first day in Micronesia, an island in the Pacific, Lisa thought people weren‘t paying any attention to her. The day was hot. She went into a store and asked, ―Do you have cold drinks? The woman there didn't say anything. Lisa repeated the question. Still the Woman said nothing. She later learned that the woman had answered her: She had raised her eyebrows (眉毛), which in Micronesia means \
Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria, a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant that was known for its cabbage. She asked the waiter, \ have cabbage today?\He nodded his head. Jan waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a nod means no. Tom had a similar problem when he arrived in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the head. He thought some people had not understood, so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same thing. He soon found out that his students did understand. In India, people nod and shake their heads in different ways depending on where they come from. You have to know where a person is from to understand whether they mean \

They decided that miscommunications were always possible可知,他们对在不同地区与人如何交流感到有麻烦。
77. B细节理解题 根据第二段的最后一句话―She had raised her eyebrows (眉毛), which in Micronesia means \可判断答案是B.
In that country, a nod means no.可知在这个地方点头表示不。
Once there was a piano player in a bar(酒吧). People came just to hear him play. But one night, a lady asked him to sing a song. \
But the lady told the waiter, \‖ The waiter shouted across the room, \‖ So he did. He had never sung in public before. Now he was singing for the very first time! Nobody had ever heard the song Mona Lisa sung so beautifully!
He had talent(天赋) he was sitting on! He may have lived the rest of his life as a no-name piano player in a no-name bar. But once he found, by accident, that he could sing well, he went on working hard and became one of the best-known singers in the US. His name was Nat King Cole. You, too, have skills and abilities. You may not feel that your talent is great, but it may be better than you think. With hard work, most skills can be improved. 81. C 细节理解题 根据第四行的一句 ―I'm tired of listening to the piano.

Doctor Seuss was born in 1904. By the middle 1950s, he had become one of the best-loved and most successful children's book writers in the world. His books are very popular with young readers. They enjoy the invented words and the pictures of unusual funny animals and plants.
In 1954, life magazine published(刊登) a report about school children who
could not read. The report said many children's books were not interesting. Doctor Seuss strongly hoped to help children and decided to write books that were interesting and easy to read. He used words with the same ending sound, like fish and wish. He did not receive training in art. Yet, he drew the pictures for most of his books.
In 1957, Dr. Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat. He used less than 230 words to write the book and even a six-year-old should be able to read it. It was a fun story and easy to read. Children loved it. Their parents loved it, too. Today it is still one of the stories they like best. The success of The Cat in the Hat made him want to write more books for children. In 1960, he wrote a book using less than fifty words. The book is called Green Eggs and Ham.
In 1984, Doctor Seuss won a Pulitzer Prize He was honored for the education
and enjoyment his books provided American children and their parents.
He died at the age of 87, but his influence remains. Millions of his books have been sold worldwide. People say his books helped change the way American children learned to read. Yet, his books are loved by people of all ages. Doctor Seuss once said, \write for people.
91. Doctor Seuss learned from the magazine that _______. A. some school children could not read B. many children's books were interesting C. children wanted to learn to read D. a writer for children was wanted
92. People like his books because the books ______. A. are cheap and easy to get
B. were written in different languages C. are easy and interesting to read D. were written with invented words
93. He wrote the book The Cat in the Hat at the age of _____. A. 50 B. 53 C. 56 D. 87 94. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Doctor Seuss wrote Green Eggs and Ham with over 230 words. B. Doctor Seuss wrote books only for children in the United States. C. The Cat in the Hat was written only for six-year-old children. D. His books provided education and enjoyment for Americans. 95. From the text we know that Doctor Seuss __________. A. won a Pulitzer Prize soon after his death
B. sold millions of his books himself worldwide C. changed American children's way of reading
91. A 细节理解题 从文章第二段开头的In 1954, life magazine published(刊登) a report about school children who could not read. The report said many children's books were not interesting.
Doctor Seuss strongly hoped to help children and decided to write books that were interesting and easy to read.
Doctor Seuss was born in 1904. In 1957, Dr. Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat.
He was honored for the education and enjoyment his books provided American children and their parents. In 1960, he wrote a book using less than fifty words. The book is called Green Eggs and Ham. Yet, his books are loved by people of all ages.可知答案B错误;第三段第二句even a six-year-old should be able to read it.

Prana was a beautiful dog, whose name means ―breath of life‖. Although he died several years ago, I can still remember the days we spent together and what he has taught me about love.
I have two apple trees in the garden. Prana loved apples. When he went outside, he‘d catch an apple and take it into the house to eat later. The apples had been on the ground and were often dirty so I wasn‘t always happy that Prana had brought them into the house.
It was an autumn day in America, but it was very cold. A big snow fell and we had not done anything for its coming. On that special day, Prana went outside and I watched him through the window. I noticed that he was madly digging(挖) holes and bringing the apples to the ground so they could be seen above the snow. I did not know why he was doing this. He seemed to want to do something special.
When I called him back, he had his usual one apple in his mouth. About five minutes later, I looked outside. The garden was completely covered with birds. Prana had dug up all those apples for his bird friends to eat. He knew that they wouldn‘t have stored enough food for the coming winter!

When we have small cuts in the skin(皮肤),something strange may happen. The cuts are able to heal(痊愈) themselves in a couple of days. How does this happen? Read on,and you will find out the secret.
Every living thing on the earth is made up of cells(细胞).Cells grow and make new cells. Most cells are very tiny and we can‘t see them with our eyes.Different cells have different uses. Our skin cells are special ones. The cells on the surface(表面) of our skin are old dead cells.New skin cells are right under the surface. These are the living skin cells. They do work for our bodies. They help protect our bodies and heal cuts.
Our bodies make skin cells all the time.As the old cells fall off, new cells grow in the same place. Each person makes about 18 kg of skin cells during his or her life.Surface skin cells fit together closely with no gaps between them. When you cut or bum yourself, you can harm your skin cells.A small cut will not do much harm.Your skin will quickly heal itself by making new skin cells. How do skin cells work? First, the cells near the cut get bigger and move into the gap.Next, these bigger cells meet in the middle. They form a new layer(层)of skin cells. Finally, new cells will grow until the gap disappears completely. In this way, your skin can grow and get well itself.

There have been many great inventions or things that changed the way we live. The first great invention was the one that is still very important today——the wheel. This made it easier to carry heavy things and to travel long distance.
For hundreds of years after that there were few inventions that as much effect as the wheel. Then in the early 1800s the world started to change. There was little unknown land left in the world. People didn‘t have to explore much any more. They began to work instead to make life better.
In the second half of the 19th century many great inventions were made. Among them were the camera, the light and the radio. These all play a big part in our daily life today.
The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions. The helicopter in 1909, movies with sound in 1926, the computer in 1928, jet planes in 1930. This was also a time when a new material was first made. Nylon came out in 1935. It changed the kind of clothes people wore.
The middle part of the 20th century brought new ways to help people get over diseases. They worked very well. They made people healthier and allowed them to live longer. By the 1960s most people could expect to live to be at least 60.
By this time most people in developed countries had a very good life. Of course new inventions continued to be made. But man now had a desire(渴望) to explore again. The earth was known to man but the stars were not. Man began looking for ways to go into space. Russia made the first step. Then United States took a step. Since then other countries, including China and Japan, have made their own steps into space.

Like many people, I have no clear idea about heroes. At some point, we all wonder if we need a hero and what a hero really is.
Although there are a lot of differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics (特点) which give us courage and make us want to learn from them. A hero does something worth talking about. A hero has a special story to tell and people think highly of it. But a hero is not just the person with great fame (声誉) .
A hero has powers (力量) larger than himself. Some people want to live like a hero, and they have to experience life with new and further meaning. A sure test for would-be heroes is what or whom they serve. What do they want to live and die for? If the answer suggests they serve only their own fame, they may be famous persons but not heroes.
A hero has a vision from the mountaintop. He has the power to move people. He creates new possibilities. Without Gandhi, India might still be part of Britain. Without Martin Luther King, Jr., Americans might take different buses, eat in different restaurants, go for walks in different parks, and shop in different stores because of the different colours of their skin.
There might be changes in society without a hero, but the speed of change would be rather slow. Thanks to heroes in history, they make the society develop so rapidly. 66. 69. Black people in America used to ________ before Martin Luther King, Jr.. A. shop at the white‘s stores B. drive buses with the white C. take walks in the white‘s parks D. eat in restaurants without the white 70. What can we learn from the passage?
A. We don‘t need heroes anymore at some point now. B. Heroes are all the same though different in cultures. C. People get power from heroes to move to a new place.
D. Our society has developed faster because of heroes in history. 【

Dereek Joubert and his wife, Beverly, have made many films about wild animals in Africa. Their films and photographs are very popular and one of the photographs has been on the front cover of a National Geographic magazine.
A working day for Dereck and Beverly starts very early — at 4:30 in the morning! That‘s when they get up and start filming. And it‘s a long day — they often work until 8:30 in the evening. In the winter it's very cold and in the summer it can be 40° C. Dereck always does the filming — Beverly never does that, and she doesn't write. But Dereck never takes photographs or records the sound. They work very well as a team, and they both believe we should shoot animals with cameras— not with guns!
When they have finished filming and taking photographs for the day, they have dinner and Dereek usually writes while Beverly looks at her photographs. At night, they usually sleep in a small tent, but they sometimes sleep in the Land Cruiser — when you're very close to animals, it‘s sometimes safer to sleep in the car.
Dereek and Beverly have also travelled around the world and given talks about their work. Dereek says that the animals are not just something to look at — they play an important role. Beverly thinks the wild animals can teach us a lot about ourselves. 51. Dereek and Beverly start working__________. What do you do if you're stranded (处于困境的) on a lonely island? Surely you need to find a way to get in touch with the outside world. Your best chance of doing this is to draw the attention of a passing plane. Body signals (信号)
Pilots from different countries understand body signals if they have the correct training, When you wave your arms up and down in a straight line, it means, \and swing your arm from side to side, it means \land, push your hands out in front of you and bend (弯曲) your knees. If you want to say that it's not safe to land, put your arms in the air and move them to one side. Smoke signals
The smoke from a fire can be seen from far away, so it‘s a good way to draw attention. If the weather is dry, it isn‘t hard to start a fire. Remember, however, that fires can be very dangerous if they get out of control. Never light a tire unless you're sure that it can‘t spread. If the ground is dark, light smoke can be seen more easily. Green grass and leaves produce light smoke. Ground-to-air signals
It's a good idea lo build some signals, too. Use large pieces of wood to make the symbols (标记). If you can't find any wood, use earth. Some useful symbols are: F \ II \ I \

My summer hols wr CWOT. B4. we usd 2 go 2 NY 2C my bro, his GF & thr 3 : -@ kids FTF. ILNY, its gr8.
Can you understand this sentence? If you can‘t, don't feel too bad: neither could the middle school teacher in England who received this as homework. This is Netspeak: the language of computerized communication found on Internet or cellphones. To newcomers, it ran look like a completely foreign language. So, what is the \of the sentence above? My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend, and their three screaming kids face to face. I love New York; it‘s great.
Schoolteachers and parents say this new form of writing is harming(破坏) the English language. Increasing spelling and grammatical mistakes can be seen in students' writing. They fear the language could become corrupted
Everyone should just relax, say linguists They believe Netspeak is in fact more of a good thing. David Crystal, from the University of Wales, argues that Netspeak and Internet create a new language use and the almost lost art of diary writing has been picked up again. Geoffrey Nunberg, from Stanford University, agrees. \says, ―Kids who are now doing text messaging, e-mail, and instant messages will write at least as well as, and possibly better than, their parents.\
