I am Peter Brown. I am a writer with an important magazine. The other day I saw a white-haired man sitting on the chair in front of his house. I could see the wrinkles (皱纹) in his face and neck, and his wrinkled hands. Articles on the secrets of living to an old age are always popular with our readers, s o I decided to write a story and discover the secret of this man’s long life. As I went near him, I said:

“Sir, would it be okay if I talked with you for just a moment?”

“Not at all. Actually, it would make me very happy. I get very bored sitting here, ev en for

a short time. Until a little while ago, I lived a full and active life without a moment’s rest.”

“Well, they say that a lot of activities help one to live a long time.”

“That’s true, very true. I still feel very well, although my step has slowed down a little.”

The conversation continued in that way for a while. Although I tried to be very thoughtful about getting information from older people, it seemed to me that it would now be all right to begin to ask some polite questions.

“Would it be okay if I smoked?”

“Not at all.”

“I’d offer you one, but I suppose you probably don’t smoke, or drink, or…”

“You’re wrong! I’ve always smoked a great deal. And until a little while ago, I went dancing every night. And as for alcoholic drinks ...”

“Do you mean to say that you’ve done these things all your life?”

“Of course. Why does that surprise you so much?”

“I’ve always been told that doing those things is bad for the health.”

“Nonsense!”

“I suppose that you have another secret ... a lot of fruit... vegetables ... a lot of exercise in the fresh air…”

“Don’t be silly! I hate exercise in the fresh air, and I don’t like any kind of vegetable.”

“This is unbelievable!”

“What do you mean, unbelievable? What are you talking about?”

“It’s just that I can’t understand how you’ve been able to live like that and to have lasted so long. Tell me, how old are you?”

“Me? I’m twenty-eight. Why?”

24. Why did Peter Brown decide to write a story about the man?

A. Because the man looked healthy.

B. Because he thought the man looked cool.

C. Because the man was white-haired and wrinkled.

D. Because readers are interested in the secret of a long life.

“A seed?” The man looked at the big tree. “Are you joking? You are not a seed. You are a big tree!”

“Really?”

“Yes! Why else do you think people come here?”

“What do they come here for?”

“To feel your shade(树荫)! Don’t tell me you didn’t know you had grown over time.”

A moment passed before the traveler’s words brought him pride. The seed thought and smiled for the first time in his life. The years of torture (折磨) by the sun and the rain finally helped him grow up.

Travelling Alone in Toronto

Travelling alone can be frightening. I have travelled by myself many times but there was always someone to meet me at the other end of the train or plane journey. This time was different. Last week I had a holiday from work, but none of my friends had the same week off. But I still booked a train ride to Toronto and a bed in a hostel(旅社) for one week.

One week by myself! Would I be lonely? Quite the opposite! In fact, there were many benefits. Firstly, I was able to do whatever I wanted. I spent hours in museums that would have seemed boring to some of my friends. I walked all around the city, which some people may have found too tiring. Secondly, I discovered my independence and developed map-reading skills. Finally, being in the safe environment of a hostel with travellers also gave a great chance to meet new people from all over the world.

However, there were some disadvantages of travelling alone. I missed having someone to talk to. Eating in a restaurant or cooking in the hostel was less fun on my own. Besides, without a travel partner, I won't be able to laugh about and remember my Toronto adventure with friends in years to come.

I am very proud of myself for travelling alone and I had a fantastic time in Toronto. However, in the future, I think I will always prefer to travel with another person or in a small group. Though,

maybe it depends who I travel with --- I would rather be by myself than with someone who is lazy and difficult!

32. The author travelled alone in Toronto because .

A. she was asked to do so

B. she had no friends to go with her

C. she wanted to know something different

D. she d idn’t like to travel with someone else

33. In Paragraph 2 the author wants to tell us of travelling alone.

A. the costs

B. the danger

C. the advantages

D. the tiredness

34. What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 3?

A. She missed her family very much.

B. She didn’t need to cook by herself.

C. She couldn’t do whatever she wanted.

D. She had nobody to share the experience with.

35. The last paragraph suggests that the author .

A. is afraid of travelling alone

B. enjoys travelling with her family

C. prefers to travel with proper partners

D. is interested in travelling in a large group

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

When I was little, my mom would say, “Half the fun of doing anything is sharing it with others.” 36 Friends and mates allow us to enjoy our successes and our joys, comfort us in our hard moments, and provide a mirror for us to learn more about ourselves. 37 As Robert Louis Steven once said, “A friend is a present which you give yourself.”

38 Hear what your friend or mate has to say first rather than jump to conclusions. When they hear their words repeated back to them, it can help them to realize what they said was not exactly what they meant to say.

Patience, sympathy and understanding are also important qualities. You know the old golden rule, “39 ” The concern of a friend could make the difference between success and

failure. Encouragement and confidence are the gifts that can help change a person’s life.

Take care, though, with whom you choose to have close relationship, for they can have a great effect on. As someone once to ld me, “ 40 They will either take you up or down.”

A. I am afraid so.

B. It is quite true.

C. They enrich our lives.

D. A friend in need is a friend indeed.

E. The attitudes of your friends are like the buttons on a lift.

F. Care for others the way you would like them to care for you.

G. To be a good friend or a partner, it’s important to be a good listener.
