When I was twenty years old, my grandmother invited me to Europe. I had never been to foreign countries before, so I was very excited. When I

told my professor about the trip, he suggested, “Keep a journal.” More than ten years later, I am so thankful for his suggestion, as I can look back on this first trip to Europe through my journal.

Keeping a travel journal is very simple. During your vacation, write down the things that

4

interest you. They may not be the tourist attractions but some small things, such as a meal and a talk.

Choose a good journal book that you like. The size of your book is also important. It should feel good in your hand. Some people feel that a travel journal book should be small and easy to carry, while others prefer a large-sized one. My journal has always been about 8*11 inches. I haven’t found any real problems with carrying it. It fits well into a backpack. Y ou’d better get your journal with a waterproof(防水的) cover.

You can write with different kinds of pens or pencils to make your journal look beautiful. Even if you are not good at drawing, a journal can make you more creative. You will find yourself quickly drawing things or writing poems in your journal. Bring back some pictures and postcards so that you can put them in your journal. You can cut them into the shapes you like so that you can make your journal look more beautiful.

Tourist maps are also a wonderful thing to add to your journal because they show where you have been.

There are so many things you can write in your journal, such as the beautiful sights, a person you have seen in a museum, a café that has caught your attention and your feelings about your trip. All these small details do make up your trip.

My husband and I were out shopping on a cold day. On the way out of the parking lot, we saw a man standing on the grass, holding a sign. The

sign didn’t say anything about needing money or food, but simply said,

“Help would be appreciated(感激)!”

My husband wanted to give him some money, but he just had credit cards with him, so he picked up a bag of fast food and gave it to the man. But thinking about what we gave wouldn’t be enough, we parked and a sked him to go to a restaurant with us. He looked at us for a moment as if we were crazy, but then followed us.

The man told us that he was trying to save money for some candles that can warm him up, not for food that day. My heart broke. I explained that it was our treat and he could pick out anything he wanted from the menu. He said he always wanted to try a double cheeseburger, but had never got the chance. So we bought him a double cheeseburger and hot coffee. The total was around nine dollars. It was a piece of cake for us, but the world to him.

He said he h ad lost his flat after losing his job. Since then he’d lived in a tent because the shelters were full and he wanted to leave room for women and children. After he finished eating, we went to a store and bought some candles for him. Then we said goodbye.

We saw that man in our car a couple more times. We would give him a few dollars if we had any cash with us. Then one day, he just wasn’t there. A year passed and we never met again. One day, my husband and I went to the fast food place to treat ourselves. We heard a voice say “hi” while we were looking up at the menu. It was that man. He had been working there for eight months. He was preparing to get a flat, too.

We talked about how his life was going before there was a line behind us. Then I said we should probably pick something and get out of the way. He said, “I’ll treat you.”

He set down a tray(托盘) in front of us, with double cheeseburgers and hot coffee. I picked it up, thanked him and walked away before I started crying. What he didn’t know was that my husband had been without a job for six months. We only had last twenty-five dollars. The meal may not have meant much to him anymore, but it meant a lot to me. I sat down at the table, looked at the food and smiled.

In the Middle Eastern country of Lebanon, there are more than 1 million refugees(难民). Youssef was 10 years old when a local Syrian

musician discovered his talent: a deep, powerful voice—well-suited to traditional songs. However, Syria’s civil war took place soon. He and

his family lost their home.

When the Action for Hope Music School announced that it was looking for talented children to train, his family encouraged him to attend the school. A year and half later, the now-14-year-old, Yousssef, with another 11 children, was chosen to take part in a concert.

Youssef, a shy boy, was a lead singer in the concert. He gave a confident performance of traditional Syrian songs. “We only heard the sound of a mortar(迫击炮). It fell near us. A whole building came down. That is all I remember,” said Youssef. “Music makes me forget everything. Music is the most important thing.”

Basma, director of Action for Hope, said the music school offers children who suffers from the war strength. They can find a good way to express themselves and stop thinking of themselves as refugees.

“Art gives str ength. It comes from the ability to create,” Basma said. “People who are in difficult conditions need this streng th much more than the rich.”

46. When was Youssef’s talent discovered?
