While astronauts in space get to do many exciting things, they miss out on ordinary things that we all take for granted—being able to walk on firm ground, hanging out with family and digging into a slice of hot steaming pizza. Though not much can be done about the first two things, there may soon be a solution to the third one, thanks to this cool 3-D pizza printer!

About a year ago, NASA offered $125,000 to Anjan Contractor, a 3-D technology expert, to

build a device that would allow astronauts to make pizza on demand. The mechanical engineer promised that his invention would produce pies in large quantities that looked, tasted and even smelled like pizza made in common ovens.

Late last year, the engineer presented a video of his first prototype (原型) that begins by creating a single slice of dough (面团) that is cooked and printed at the same time. Then comes the tomato “sauce”—a mix of tomato powder, oil and water and finally, a protein slice that looks like cheese. While the video doesn’t show the baking process, the inventor says that once the pizza is printed, it can be ready to be consumed in 7 seconds.

While the pie in the video looks delicious enough to attract any pizza lover, Anjan Contractor is far from ready for astronauts. That’s because he still has to find a solution to make the food container in the printer last for 30 years. Though that may sound unrealistic, actually it is not. Anjan Contractor believes that the only way that is possible is that the water is removed from all the ingredients and then they are reduced to the powder form. This, as you can imagine, will not be so easy. But, while the printer may not be ready for space, it certainly looks ready enough for people on earth. Hopefully, NASA and Contractor will consider selling it to those not fortunate enough to go to Mars!

4. Why does the author mention the things that astronauts in space cannot do?

A. To ask us not to take common things for granted. B. To show they live a difficult life there. C. To show their life is boring in space. D. To introduce the topic of the text.

5. NASA offered $125,000 to Anjan Contractor mainly to ________.

A. create some new type of 3-D printer B. attract more companies to work for NASA C. help astronauts in space enjoy fresh pizza one day D. produce pizza in large quantities to earn great profits

6. The biggest challenge that Anjan Contractor is faced with now is probably that ________.

A. he has no money left to go on with his research B. the pizza doesn’t seem appetizing to pizza lovers C. he has no way to make pizza that can last for thirty years

D. he cannot make the food container last for decades 7. What’s the best title of the passage?

A. NASA is trying its best to help astronauts eat better B. Astronauts may soon be able to enjoy steaming hot pizza C. NASA is working on making pizza for common people D. A 3-D pizza printer has been used to make pizza

How do you spend your Sunday? For many, this traditional day of rest and churchgoing has become a day to shop, but it may be taking a toll on happiness. Researchers from Depaul University tracked church attendance and levels of happiness among some Americans. Those people live in states that had cancelled so-called blue laws which once required most shops to stay closed on Sundays.

The research found that allowing stores to open on Sundays was linked with a decline in church attendance among white women, which led to a decline in happiness. Among black women, the cancel of the blue laws had no measurable effect, although that may be because the sample size was too small to draw any statistically meaningful conclusions.

But the finding was true only for women. For men, the cancel of blue laws didn’t seem to influence church attendance or levels of happiness. Since the cancel of blue laws, women are about 17 percent less likely to report being “pretty happy”, and more likely to report being “not happy”according to the study. A professor of economics at Depaul said, “ People know there is a connection between religiosity and happiness, and our paper tends to provide more conclusive evidence that religiosity among women does affect happiness. ’’

So why would Sunday shopping make women less happy? Part of the reason may be that some of the women were required to work on Sundays after the cancel of blue laws. Or the decline in women’s happiness may be linked to the behavior of their children, once Sunday shopping is allowed, many of whom may start hanging out at shopping malls on Sundays. Or it may simply be that the attraction of shopping is more powerful than the desire to attend church, even though it brings less happiness.

8. The underlined sentence “it may be taking a toll on happiness” means ________ .

A. B. C. D.

it may decrease some people’s sense of happiness it may be having a positive result on people’s mind it may destroy many Americans’ sense of happiness it may be having a good effect on women’s feelings

9. What happened after the cancel of the blue laws?

A. B. C. D.

Black women did not go shopping any more. Fewer white women went shopping on Sundays. White men attended church more often than before. Some white women gave up attending church on Sundays.

10. What can we learn from the text?

A. B. C. D.

Attending church makes white women unhappy. Children’s hanging out makes their parents happy. Black women supported the cancel of the blue laws. Some white women were happier before the cancel.

11. One of the reasons causing the result was that _______ .

A. B. C. D.

shopping on Sundays was a waste of time women became more religious than before some women had to go to work on Sundays shopping would cost a large sum of money

D

Over the past several years, scientists have developed so-called “camera pills” that can be swallowed by patients and then send video from within their bodies. While such non-digestible pills could serve as an invaluable means of imaging, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University are now looking into tiny electronic medical devices that not only could be swallowed but also partially digested.

The research project is being led by professors Christopher Bettinger and Jay Whitacre. Bettinger has been working on biodegradable (可生物降解的)electronics for medical use, while Whitacre has developed an inexpensive battery which is safe to eat.

“I had claimed my battery was so harmless that you could eat it\Whitacre. “Chris came into my office and asked me whether I could really eat it. The answer is yes and the rest is history
