As many as twenty countries will be the first to receive assistance from a new effort to improve African agriculture. The Gates and Rockefeller foundations in the United States recently announced the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa.

Their joint effort will begin with what they call a first investment of 150 million dollars in a seed program known as PASS.PASS is the Program for African Seed Systems. The money is to go toward seeds that can produce bigger harvests in conditions south of the Sahara.

To be chosen for the project, countries must be able to support agricultural research systems.Countries with civil unrest or governments unwilling to carry out the program will not be involved.

Between the 1940s and 1960s,the Rockefeller Foundation helped launch the “Green Revolution” in Latin America and Asia. The starting is valued highly.Norman Borlaug, known as the father of the Green Revolution, was a Rockefeller Foundation scientist. He won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on improved crops and changes in farming methods.Farmers increased their use of fertilizers and pesticide chemicals, and irrigation systems to water crops.Food production sharply increased and helped prevent widespread hunger.

The project in Africa has similar goals. One is to develop new seeds that resist disease and dry conditions.Another goal is to make sure those seeds reach farmers, along with fertilizers, chemicals and knowledge of farming.Still another is to invest in training future agricultural scientists in Africa.

Asia’s Green Revolution centered on wheat and rice. But experts say no single crop will revolutionize farming in Africa because farmers there grow a mixture of different crops.

Experts say the project will have to deal with dry conditions, poor soil quality and other realities of farming in southern Africa.Crops are often grown year after year in the same fields,so the soil loses all of its nutrients. At the same time, though, there is concern about too much use of fertilizers.

Separately,American businessman George Soros says he will give fifty million dollars over five years to a United Nations Project in Africa. The Millennium Village Program sends experts into African communities to improve health care, education and farming.

60.What is said about the PASS?

A.The Program is for World’s Seed Systems.

B.The money is to go toward tools that can help get bigger harvest. C.They were used to changing bad weather conditions.

D.The first investment is about 150 million dollars.

61.Many crops will revolutionize farming in Africa because________.

A.farmers want to comfort the families B.farmers must obey an official order

C.farmers in that place grow a combination of different crops D.crops are often grown year after year in the different fields

62.How much will George Soros give for one average year to a USA project in Africa?

A.Fifty million dollars. B.Five million dollars. C.150 million dollars. D.10 million dollars.

63.According to the passage, the underlined word “launch” in Paragraph 4 probably means “______”.

A.have B.protect C.start D.value

The United States is trying to improve its education system that produces millions of citizens who cannot read, write,or add—let alone finding their country on a map.

In his first State of Union message since taking office a year ago,President George Bush promised to wipe out illiteracy(文盲) in the next decade and declared that “by the year 2008,US students must be the first in the world in math and science achievements”.They have a long way to go.American students were placed 14th in a recent general science test conducted in 16 countries. In a separate survey of chemistry students, the United States came 12 out of 14.In a mathematics test, they were last.According to Bush, there are 17 million illiterates in this country of 245 million people.Other estimates put the number as high as 23 million. In percentage terms, that ranks the United States alongside Nicaragua and below Cuba.“This nation,”Bush said in his State of the Union address,“will not accept anything but excellent in education.”Bush, who has declared himself “Education President”,and senior officials of his administration are warning that the United States will be unable to compete in the world without an educated workforce.

How to increase educational standards is a matter of debate in a country whose schools have no uniform national curriculum and are subject to a confusing variety of state and local controls. Most experts

think that the problem lies at the elementary and high school’s levels rather than with universities—but even their graduates show huge gaps in general knowledge.Among the root causes most frequently mentioned in education debates is the low respect in which US society holds teachers—in contrast to Japan and Germany. In Japan teaching is a profession of high prestige(威望) and high pay.In the United States teachers are near the bottom of the society.

64.The causes of low educational level in America include the following EXCEPT that________.

A.some problems exist in primary and secondary education B.society keeps teachers in low respect

C.America pays more attention to economy instead of education D.America has no uniform national courses

65.Which of the following statements can be inferred from the passage?

B.The education in Japan and Germany is in higher level.

C.According to Bush, the number of illiterates accounts for 9% of the total.

D.Teachers in the United States enjoy good treatment and great respect.

66.Which of the following is the right order of the leastfirst of the percent of illiterates?

A.Germany,Cuba,Nicaragua. B.Germany,Nicaragua,Cuba. C.Nicaragua,Japan,Cuba. D.Cuba,Japan,Nicaragua.

答案

21.A [感叹句式有两种:How+adj./adv.或What+n.。

known as 3M此处相当于定语从句which is known as 3M。]

A项缺少连词,C、D两项缺少be动词。]

27.D [考查“the+比较级……,the+比较级……”

consist of由……组成;make up组成;come across遇见。]

29.B [be/get used to doing sth.习惯于做某事;be used to do sth.

30.B [advise sb. to do sth.

31.D [refer to涉及;be intended for为……

without the trouble of...

it在句中作形式主语,真正的主语是to keep order in an important football match,其他选项都不能作形式主语。]

41.A [break up with sb.

43.D [pass pleasantly

45.A [由end up可知他们要“毕业”了。]

47.B [“提醒某人某事”表示为remind sb. of/about sth.。] 48.A [ever曾经;曾。]

50.D [leave sth. for sb.

52.A [又说又笑talking and laughing。] 54.D [lose a friend失去一个朋友。] 55.D [change my life改变了我的生活。]

61.C [根据文章倒数第三段的“But experts say no single crop will

revolutionize farming in Africa because farmers there grow a mixture of different crops.”

62.D [根据最后一段的“American businessman George Soros says he will give fifty million dollars over five years to a United Nations Project in Africa.”

63.C [根据后面的“The starting is valued highly.”

64.C [文章第三段提到“whose schools have no uniform national curriculum”,“the problem lies at the elementary and high school’s levels...”以及“Among the root causes most frequently mentioned...the low respect in which US society holds teachers...”,由此可知A、B和D三项均是教育水平低的原因,选项C未在文中提及,故为正确答案。]

65.B [第二段开头,布什总统曾许诺要在接下来的十年里消除文盲,后面指出“They have a long way to go...According to Bush, there are 17 million illiterates in this country of 245 million people.”,由此可知,布什并没有实现,故选项A不对;根据布什的统计,文盲比例应为17/245,约为7%,而不是9%,故排除C;根据文章最后一句话可知,在美国,老师的地位几乎在最底层,由此可排除D;根据文章最后一段倒数第二、三句可推断出,B为正确答案。]

根据文章倒数第三句话可知,在德国,教师地位比较高,由此可推断出其教育水平高,文盲也较少;第二段中间部分的“In percentage terms, that ranks the United States alongside Nicaragua and below Cuba.”

由第七段中第一句话“...teacherincharge from Innova Junior College,which organized the event.”

由第七段中的“Although the topics were local subjects...”

71.Cheaper 72.Convenient 73.cost 74.£233

75.£197 76.security 77.reliability 78.widespread 79.Influence 80.bargains

Dear Editor,

We are students of Guangming Middle School. We not only work hard in class but also are active outside class.Every day we are organized to put the bicycles around the school buildings in order, clean the tables and sweep the floor in the dining hall.Once a week we go to help the old and disabled people in their houses around our school. We also clean the street in front of the school and the square nearby.

From the activities,we have learnt what kind of person we should be as well as how we should manage the school. As a result,we treasure the fruits of our own labor. When we find ourselves helpful to others,we all feel happy and enjoy it very much.

Yours sincerely, Li Hua
