V. Translation

Money is fun and almost entirely self-explanatory. My way of teaching the child about money is setting up an account for him. Interest rate offered by the bank and compounded holds his attention and he has soon turned into a keen saver. Another attractive feature is that his account belongs to him. He can make other deposits, or withdrawals, whenever he likes.

Giving children more control, not less is helping him become a rational consumer.

V. Guided Writing

New Interests of University Students

There has been a change of interests on campus in recent years. Many excellent students used to show a great interest in liberal arts. To become a writer was their life-long dream. Now top students go in for computer science, business studies and other subjects concerning finance. Obviously they believe if they master such subjects they are more likely to get well-paid jobs after their graduation.

Moreover, students display greater enthusiasm than ever in learning English. A good command of the language will open up new windows for them and help broaden their mind and horizon. Besides, with the carrying out of the open-door policy and the rapid development of our economy, more and more companies have entered into business relations with foreign firms. So university graduates with a good knowledge of English will find it easier to win good positions.

II. Reading Comprehension (30%)

Passage OneEver since William Harvey defined an animal’s heart as “the sovereign of everything

within them, the sum of their microcosm,” in De Motu Cordis in 1628, the heart has been one of the most widely studied organs of the body ? and fortunately so, given that heart disease is the world’s leading cause of death.

Each year, around 8 million people die from heart attacks and many millions more suffer from, and eventually succumb to, heart diseases such as congestive heart failure and arrhythmia (心律不齐). Global figures are rising, yet calculations suggest that this number could be slashed by around 50 per cent if smoking were removed from the equation. However, decreases would be offset to some degree as the world’s population ages, diets become more fat-laden and lifestyles more sedentary (久坐的), as all these factors are harmful to a healthy heart.

Although scientific study of the heart began four centuries ago, the past few decades have seen a paradigm (范例) shift in research. We are now able to monitor the process of contraction and relaxation that underlies the gross function of the heart at close quarters by tracking the movement of calcium (钙) and other ions (离子) within myocytes (肌细胞). And genetic information is used in trial heart gene therapy. As with all diseases, understanding the processes involved at the molecular and genetic level is enabling us to make inroads in preventing and treating heart disease.

11. If there is no one smoking, people suffering from heart diseases can be reduced _________. A. by about one fourth B. by about one thirds C. by about half D. to none

12. According to the passage, _________ is harmful to our hearts. A. drinking coffee B. long-time sitting

C. living a mobile life D. not eating regular meals 13. Scientific study of the heart _________. A. began a few decades ago B. began before Harvey’s time

C. is different from what it used to be

D. focuses on the ageing problem of the society

14. At the molecular level, researchers study the heart _________.

A. by tracking the movement of calcium and other ions within myocytes B. by monitoring the process of contraction and relaxation of the heart C. by doing trial heart gene therapy

D. by observing the heart beat of the subjects 15. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

8 外教社?《大学英语》(全新版)4级学业测试

Directions: Read the following passage and translate the underlined sentences into Chinese.

(注意:翻译做在试卷二上。)

For three centuries after the Norman conquest, two languages were used side by side in England. (76) Latin and French were the languages of the upper classes, spoken at courts and used in churches and schools. Official edicts and documents as well as literary works were written on parchment(羊皮纸) in Latin. (77) However, the common people clung to the Anglo-Saxon which had undergone remarkable changes. (78) The original system of Old English was weakened and a large number of French words had been absorbed. It is interesting to note that as most of the noblemen were French, so words that are related with enjoyment and pleasure are usually of the French origin whereas words that have to do with labor are usually of Old English origin. (79) Hence, different words for the live animals and for their meat after they are killed. Thus we have bull/beef, calf/veal, sheep/mutton. (80) The live animals looked after by poor English peasants had English names but the meat going to the tables of the French speaking lords had French names. In the 14th century, thousands of words and expressions were borrowed from French and Latin and Greek, and many inflectional forms of the words were dropped and formal grammar simplified.

Many students have read your articles published on several famous journals and are particularly interested in your pioneering views on modern literature. They will greatly appreciate it if they have an honour to listen to your lectures and are given a chance to consult you face to face.

With warmest regards and looking forward to your favorable reply.

Yours sincerely Huang Chengwei

Tapescript of Listening Comprehension (CET4)

Section A

Directions: In this section, you will hear 10 short conversations. At the end of each conversation, a

question will be asked about what was said. Both the conversation and the question will be spoken only once. After each question there will be a pause. During the pause, you must read the four choices marked A), B), C), and D) and decide which is the best answer. Then mark the corresponding letter with a single line through the center.

Example: You will hear: M: Is it possible for you to work late, Miss Grey?

W: Work late? I suppose so, if you really think it’s necessary.

Q: Where do you think this conversation most probably took place?

You will read: A) At an office.

B) In a waiting room. C) At an airport. D) In a restaurant.

From the conversation we know that the two were talking about some work they had to finish in the evening. This is most likely to have taken place at an office. Therefore, A) “At the office” is the best answer. You should choose [A] and mark it with a single line through the center.

1. M: Your boyfriend says he’s going to give you a car for your birthday.

W: Don’t believe him. He must have been pulling your leg when he told you that. Q: What does the woman mean?

2. W: Roberta took 22 minutes to dress and didn’t arrive until 4. M: Fortunately, we didn’t start until 4:15. Q: When did Roberta arrive?

3. W: How is George doing at the moment?

M: He’s doing fine. He planned to change his job for a while but finally decided to keep the present one.

Q: What can we learn about George in this conversation?

4. W: If I were you, I’d live in the city instead of commuting to work by train. M: But the country is so beautiful in the spring and fall. Q: Where does the man prefer to live? 5. W: I think Star Wars is a good movie. M: But Jaws is even better.

Q: What did the man think of Star Wars?

6. W: What are we going to do in case of mistake? The proposal has been typed already. It looks ready to go.

M: We’ll just have to write in any corrections by hand. Q: What are the man and the woman most likely doing?

7. M: Mrs. Hunter, you must take three pills every five hours without fail. And don’t forget to

finish the bottle.

W: Don’t worry, Doctor. I want to get well as quickly as I can. Q: What will the woman probably do?

8. M: Oh dear. I got home very late last night. I hope I didn’t disturb you. W: No, I didn’t hear a thing.

Q: What can you conclude from this conversation? 9. W: Stephen, how did your football team do last season? M: We won three times, lost twice. Q: How many times did they lose?

10. W: Good afternoon, sir. What can I do for you?

M: Some travelers are coming for dinner this evening, I want to reserve three tables for four and three for two, please.

Q: How many people are coming for dinner?

Section B: Compound Dictation

Directions: In this section, you will hear a passage three times. When the passage is read for the first

time, you should listen carefully for its general idea. When the passage is read for the second time, you are required to fill in the blanks numbered from S1 to S7 with the exact words you have just heard. For blanks numbered from S8 to S10 you are required to fill in the missing information. You can either use the exact words you have just heard or write down the main points in your own words. Finally, when the passage is read for the third time, you should check what you have written.

People over the age of 65 in the U.S.A. are called senior citizens. Life for these people is more different than for (S1) younger Americans. Most senior citizens retire, or no (S2) longer work full time. Also it is (S3) unusual for people of this age to (S4) live with their children and grandchildren. (S5) Grandparents tend to live in their own houses or (S6) apartments away from their families. For many senior citizens, the years after 65 are not (S7) enjoyable. They feel unproductive when they no longer work. In addition, they may feel lonely being away from their families and the contacts they had in their work. Moreover, (S8) they become more concerned with their health as they grow older. If they live in big cities, they often worry about their safety. Other senior citizens enjoy their lives. They feel free to do things they were not able to do when they were working and raising families. They now have time to enjoy hobbies and sports and travel. Many senior citizens move to retirement communities located in warm climates. (S9) Some senior citizens continue to work beyond retirement age. Many find new careers and professional opportunities after they retire. The number of senior citizens in the U.S. is increasing rapidly because people are living longer than before. (S10) Because of their larger numbers and more active life styles, senior citizens are gaining social influence in the country, both politically and economically. Their concerns are receiving a wider audience than ever before. The time may come when all Americans will look forward to becoming senior citizens.
