二、课程简介

高级英语课程题材广泛,时代气息浓厚,选材体裁多样,除说明文外,还有记叙文、叙述

文和论说文,是一门训练学生综合英语技能尤其是阅读理解、语法修辞与写作能力的课程,注重培养学生对不同体裁﹑不同题材﹑不同风格的文章的理解和欣赏能力。课程材料主要选自名家作品,内容涉及政治﹑经济﹑社会﹑文化、文学﹑教育﹑哲学诸方面。通过精心阅读与分析,学生的知识面得以扩大,对社会和人生的理解得以加深,分析理解能力及逻辑思维能力得以升华,英语语言综合运用能力得以提高。为此,每课都配有大量的相关练习,包括阅读理解、词汇研究、句子释义,文体分析、中英互译和写作练习等。

Featured in a wide range of materials with strong flavor of the times and various types of writing — exposition, description, narration and argumentation, Advanced English is a course designed to train students’ comprehensive English skills, especially in reading comprehension,

grammar, rhetoric and writing. Great attention is paid to students’ development in comprehension and appreciation of the articles with different types, themes and styles. Materials are selected largely from some famous contemporary masters’ works with respect to politics, economics, society, culture,

literature, education, philosophy, etc. Students’ scrupulous reading and analysis of the articles help to broaden their knowledge, deepen their understanding of life and society, elevate their analysis and logical thinking and enhance their ability comprehensively in application of the English language.

For those purposes, plenty of relevant exercises are attached to each lesson for reading

comprehension, word study, sentence paraphrase, style analysis, writing and Chinese-English cross-translation.

三、课程性质与教学目的

根据全国英语专业教学大纲规定,在基础阶段的英语教学完成以后,必须继续进行更高一级的英语阅读教学。高级英语是英语专业本科教学中的一门主干必修课,是低年级基础英语课程的延伸和发展。该课程的教学重点在于提高学生阅读理解和词汇运用能力,即能掌握和使用所学词汇,特别是同义词、近义词的区分和使用,正确理解文章的内容和主题思想,抓住文章的要点,分析文章的结构、语言技巧和修辞特点;提高学生语言表达能力,逻辑思维和判断评述能力,能用英语解释文章中的难句、要点;能用英语归纳文章的主题思想,并能对文章的内容进行简单的分析、鉴赏、评论。

学生应该能用辞典和其他工具书独立解决语言和文化、背景知识方面的难点,增加文化知识,尤其是英语语言国家的背景知识和文化知识,更好地使语言和文化结合起来。

通过一学年(约144学时 )的高级英语课程教学,学生应达到高等学校外语专业教学指导委员会修订的《 高等学校英语专业英语教学大纲 》所规定的要求:认知词汇达10,000以上,能正确而熟练地使用其中5,000多个及其最常用的搭配;能熟练掌握句子之间和段落之间的各种衔接手段,连贯地表达思想;能读懂一般英美报刊杂志上的文章、英语国家出版的有一定难度的历史传记和文学作品;能分析文章的思想观点、语篇结构、语言特点和修辞手法等。通过阅读和分析内容广泛的材料,包括涉及政治﹑经济﹑社会﹑语言﹑文学﹑教育﹑哲学等方面的名家作品,扩大学生的知识面,加深对社会和人生的理解,培养对文章的分析和理解能力﹑逻辑思维能力以及独立思考能力,巩固和提高语言综合运用能力。要求学生掌握课文的中心思想,了解篇

章结构﹑段落大意,熟悉各种常见的修辞手段以及课文的重点、难点。每课都配有大量的相关练习,包括阅读理解、词汇研究、文体分析、中英互译和写作练习等,使学生的英语水平在质量上有较大的提高。

英语专业高年级阶段的主要教学任务是让学生继续打好语言基本功,学习英语专业知识和相关专业知识,进一步扩大知识面,增强对文化差异的敏感性,提高综合运用英语进行交际的能力。

与其它高年级英语课程相比,高级英语课程课时最多,涵盖面最广;因此,该课程是保证实现教学目标的重要环节。

Lesson One

Where Do We Go From Here?

Teaching Aims and Requirements

1) carefully read the “Guide to Reading” to get a basic understanding of the background of Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech ---Where Do We Go From Here?

2) read the word and expressions provided on Page 11 that will facilitate reading 3) preview the speech itself with the help of the notes provided between page 12 to15

4) learn how to comprehend works of English literature ---for this lesson, a famous speech by a famous person

5) learn how to use some rhetorical devices such as metaphor, simile, antitheses, and parallel structure

6) understand some biblical allusions with the help of the original version 7) learn to paraphrase some sentences in the text 8) do some translation work as is required.

重点:restructuring the whole of American society with nonviolence 难点:the rhetorical devices in the speech

Lesson Two

Two Kinds

Teaching Aims and Requirements

1) carefully read the “Guide to Reading” to get a basic understanding of the background information of the story: Two Kinds

2) read the word and expressions provided on Page 30-31 that will facilitate reading 3) preview the story with the help of the notes provided on page 31-32

4) learn how to read and appreciate an English short story: especially the theme, character, organization of plot development and the hero’s or heroine’s epiphany(顿悟)

5) get some brief information about the differences between Chinese culture and American culture

6) get some information about the author, Amy Tan (谭恩美)

7) explain some meaningful sentences and understand their implications

重点:the sharp conflict between two generations and two cultures 难点:the author’s language and techniques in writing

Lesson Three

Goods Move. People Move. Ideas Move. And Cultures Change.

Teaching Aims and Requirements

1) learn how to read and appreciate an English essay in the way the arguments are presented. 2) What are some of the important words that the author uses in developing her arguments

3) get to know what the author’s attitude is towards globalization

4) get to know how the author describes the process from the moving of goods to the changing of cultures

5) note the choice of words in the rhetorical device of contrast the author employs and the mood or attitude expressed through such choice of words 6) notice some characteristics of a journalistic writing.

重点:Globalization will result in a cultural merging.

难点:the words and the rhetorical device of contrast the author employs

Professions for Women

Teaching Aims and Requirements

1) The background information of the author, Virginia Woolf, and her writing style. 2) The characteristic of the language in this essay. 3) The organization of the whole speech.

4) The transition between the author’s 1st and 2nd professional experience.

5) What metaphors the author uses in describing her first professional experiences as a book reviewer and her second professional experience as a novelist

6) The history of women’s liberation from patriarchy and women’s current social status in society.

重点:Women still encounter many of the same obstacles. 难点:the techniques the author employs in the text

Love Is a Fallacy

(三)课后练习

要把课堂教学与课外实践相结合,这是因为课外实践是课堂教学的延伸与发展,也是培养和提高学生能力的重要途径。在教师指导下,课外实践活动以课堂教学内容为基础,面向全体学生,有目的、有计划、有组织地进行,旨在培养学生的语言综合运用能力和创新能力,发展个性,培养合作精神。其形式可包括:演讲、辩论、戏剧表演、英

语角等;在有条件的情况下,高级英语课程的课外练习要尽量运用网络形式,学生随时交,教师随时批改。

(四)教学方法与手段

高级英语课程应在教学的不同环节,启发学生进行不同的活动,使学生不仅能独立工作,而且能进行逻辑思维,善于独立思考。讲解课文前安排学生做课文思考题、查工

具书等活动;课文讲解应调动学生的学习积极性,除了学习课文中的语言重难点以外,还应根据课文提出针对大意或细节的问题以及推理性问题,引导学生深入思考,并在篇章结构、文体分析等方面要求学生解释分析。

教师可利用现代的、多元的和全方位的教学模式,开发计算机辅助教学,借助网络系统、光盘资料和多媒体,更新教学内容,与时俱进,为学生提供灵活、方便和广阔的实践空间。

高级英语的课堂教学应以学生为主体、教师为主导,注意培养学生的学习能力和研

究能力,多多开展以任务为中心、形式多样的教学活动(启发式、讨论式、研讨式),课堂练习可采用分组讨论的形式,对词语、句法、修辞、篇章、文体等方面的问题进行讨论,从而提高学生的英语应用能力,充分调动学生的积极性,激发学生的学习热情,尽可能让学生参与学习的全过程。

课堂教学应遵循以下的教学原则和教学方法: 1)凸现语言基础知识原则和相应的方法。

高级英语课的教学,要充分利用其教材编写原则,即课文、补充阅读材料及练习都围绕同一主题,相关的词汇和语言现象复现率高,要注意通过各种课堂教学活动、课后阅读等辅助练习形式,进行大量的英语表达,帮助学生巩固和升华语言基础知识,提高词义辨析能力,扩大词汇量,为进一步学习打下扎实的基本功。 2)加强文化背景知识认知的原则和相应的方法。

外语学习和文化认知密切相关。高级英语课程的教学,要充分利用多媒体技术,加强学生对相关文化背景知识的学习,让学生对表层文化和深层文化有所了解,拓宽学生的视野,培养学生对不同文化的比较、辨析、说理和批评的能力。

3)主题渐进学习原则和相应的方法。

学生在词汇、文化背景知识习得的基础之上,通过赏析具有厚重感的名篇、新颖的时文,力求深化学习;不但要培养他们赏析能力、思辨能力,提高综合运用英语的水平,还要引导他们会超越纯语言的学习,引发对社会、历史、科学和文化等重大问题的兴趣,培养他们思考的习惯。针对不同的题材,教师的教学活动安排与教学方法要灵活多样,随机应变,要注重调动学生主动参与教与学的积极性。
