Analysis of the teaching material:

This is the 7th period of Unit One. The main purpose of this lesson is to make students learn what a science fiction story is like and how to write a science fiction story.

Teaching aims:

To learn what a science fiction story is like and how to write a science fiction story.

Teaching important and difficult points:

How to make students understand the science stories better.

How to write a science fiction story.

Teaching approaches:

Asking-and-answering activity.

Individual, pair or group work to make every student work in class.

Teaching Aids:

Multimedia and a blackboard

Teaching procedures:

Step 1 lead-in

1. Present some pictures of some science fiction.

2. More questions about science fiction and science fiction writers.

*Do you know what science fiction is?

It is a type of writing based on fantasy and imagination.

*What do science fiction writers often write about?

What will happen in ‘Tomorrow’s World’.

Let’s read summaries of the followi ng famous science fiction.

Step 2 reading

1. Skimming

Which one do you like best?

What are they mainly about?

Who wrote this science fiction?

Do you know something about them?

2. Scanning

For the first summary:

Where do the German professor and his nephew travel to?

What do they see during their journey?

For the second summary:

What has the scientist invented?

What does he find when he travels to year AD 802,701?

For the third summary:

What has happened to the three young people?

How do they come back to the earth?

3. Introduction to the writers

Jules Verne (February 8, 1828—March 24, 1905) was a French author and a pioneer of the science fiction genre. Verne was noted for writing about space, air, and underwater travel long before they were possible.

Herbert George Wells (September 21, 1866 - August 13, 1946) was an English writer best known for his science fiction novels such as The War of the Worlds and The Time Machine.

Zheng Wenguang (1929-2003) Beginning to write science fiction stories in the 1950s, he is regarded as the father of Chinese science fiction.

Step3 Consolidation:

Step4 writing a science fiction story (Group Work)

1. Planning

1). Discuss the two questions first.

What do you imagine the future will be like?

What would make an interesting story?

2). In the groups of four, choose a topic for their group’s science fiction story. (e.g.Future farming)

2. Preparing

Take notes of the story: in 3000, on a farm land of the moon

Time and place (setting): e.g.

In 3000, on the moon

Storyline:

Human beings, the aliens and the robots plan to explore the Moon

Characters:

Human beings, the aliens and the robots

3. Producing

1). Write the story, please. Each group member should write one paragraph.

2). After finishing the story, you should proofread it together and make any necessary changes.

4. Presenting

Report your story to the whole class now. And make sure that you can answer their questions Step 5 Homework

1.Finish the WB exercises (B1, B2and D1, D2)

2.Read the three summaries.

3.Finish writing a science fiction story.
