Passage 2 (2016广州改编)
植物灯
Getting electricity has always been a problem for the 173 people living in Nuevo Saposoa, a small village in Peru, South America. However, things went from bad to worse in March 2015 after heavy rains damaged the only power cables in the area. The villagers were forced to use oil lamps, which are not only expensive but
also dangerous because of the harmful gases they produce.
Luckily, researchers at the University of Technology(UT)in Lima, Peru heard about their problem and found a wonderful solution. They made a lamp that can be powered by plants and soil, both of which can be easily found in the Amazonian rainforest where the village lies. The lamp takes energy from a plant growing in a wooden box and uses it to light up an LED light bulb.
While that may sound amazing and even impossible, the science behind the idea is quite simple. As plants create their food(using the sun's energy, water and chemicals from the soil), they also produce electrons — the building blocks of electrical energy. The UT team put special sticks inside the soil to capture the energy and keep it in the lamp's batteries for later use. The researchers say a single charge can power a 50-watt LED light for two hours—enough time for local villagers to get their evening work done.
The university gave ten Plant Lamps to the villagers of Nuevo Saposoa in October 2015. So far, they have been a huge success! Elmer Ramirez, the UT professor who invented the lamp, believes the Plant Lamp could help improve the lives of many people, especially small rainforest communities, 42% of whom have no electricity.
1. What are the problems of oil lamps according to Paragraph 1?
A. They are difficult to use and create pollution. B. They are expensive to buy and easily damaged. C. They are difficult to repair and produce little light. D. They are expensive to use and can be bad for health. 2. The electricity made by the Plant Lamp comes from ________.
A. plant food
B. plant waste
C. the soil's heat D. the sun's energy
3. The Plant Lamp's inventor believes it could be the most helpful for________.
A. rainforest communities C. poor people in cities 4. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To report on a new invention. B. To explain a new scientific theory. C. To describe how electricity is made. D. To discuss the problems of poor villages.
Passage 3 (2016泰安改编)
自洁服装
Some days, don't you think,“Wouldn't it be nice if the laundry(洗衣)would just do itself?” Self-cleaning clothes may sound crazy. But Australian researchers have found a way to make something like this possible!
A team at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, found a way to put special nanostructures(纳米结构)into clothing, which can then clean the clothes. When sunlight hits the nanostructures, they break down the dirt and stains(污渍)that don't belong on your clothes.
The nanostructures don't break down the actual clothing because cotton and the other clothing materials are too strong to be broken down. According to CNN, the researchers cover the clothing in a solution made of silver and copper(铜) nanostuctures. All it takes is 40 minutes of sunlight and your clothes will look as good as new.
So if you spill on yourself during lunch, you can step outside for a walk, and it will be clean by the time you go inside. It not only makes your life easier, but it can
B. cars D. farmers
also be good for the environment.
According to the US Department of Energy, the average load of laundry uses about 25 gallons(about 94 liters)of water. Water is a very important resource, so using less of it to wash clothes is better for the environment. But one of the scientists at RMIT University knows more needs to be done.
“There's more work to do before we can start throwing out our washing machines,”said Dr Rajesh Ramanathan,“but this is a strong foundation(基础).”
So what's the next step? Ramanathan wants to either start selling the solution by itself or convincing(说服) clothing makers to treat the clothing with the solution while clothes are being made.
1.How do the clothing with the nanostructures get cleaned?
A. Cotton clothes wash easily.
B. This kind of clothing washes it by itself.
C. The dirt and stains are broken down in the sunlight. D. Silver and copper help to get off the dirt in the dark. 2. What do Paragraphs 4-5 mainly talk about?
A. What advantages the self-cleaning clothes have. B. How the self-cleaning clothes work. C. How the self-cleaning clothes are made. D. What helps the self-cleaning clothes work.
3. What does the underlined word “solution” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Machines. B. Clothes. C. Silver. D. Design. 4. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Silver and copper sell well. B. The solution is not put into practice.
