第三部分:阅读理解(共8小题,每小题2分,满分16分)

First Days
First days are milestones in our lives. They mark the beginning of a new experience or journey. They are also filled with mixed emotions. They can be a little frightening as we step into the unknown, but they can also inspire us as they give us fresh hope for the future, First days are powerful as we can leave our mistakes and failures in the past and make a new start.
I want to share a story that perfectly illustrates this point. It is a story about a little girl named Trisha. Trisha was born into a family of teachers who had taught her that reading was the key to knowledge. She watched her older brother as he read his schoolbooks and could hardly wait for the day when she would learn to read.
But when Trisha finally started school, she found that she was not able to understand the words like the other boys and girls. No matter how hard she tried, the letters mixed up together, and she saw only confusion. Trisha fell further behind, the other children laughed and made fun of her, and she began to believe that she was not smart. By the time Trisha entered fifth grade, she had lost all confidence in herself. That was the year she met Mr. Falker. He was different. He praised Trisha’s talents, and he wouldn’t tolerate the other children teasing her. Mr. Falker realized that Trisha didn’t know how to read, but he knew she could with some help.
He recruited(招聘)a reading specialist, and together they worked with Trisha after school. They helped her to write letters and hear the sounds until on day Mr. Falker handed her a book and she read it all by herself. She didn’t even notice the tears in his eyes.
This is a true story. The little girl is Patricia Polacco, the famous children’s author, and Thank you Mr. Falker is the twenty-sixth book that she has written.
Mr. Falker gave her a fresh new start when she walked into his fifth grade class on that first day of school. And he made a difference in her life.
We can all make a difference in the world —one student at a time by using “first days” with wisdom and grace, and giving each individual the chance to start over and become the best that they can be.

A. frightening as we step into the unknown
B. inspiring as they give us fresh hope for the future
C. turning points from where we can make a new start
D. chances when we can forget our mistakes and failures

It was a Sunday morning, and I was in a terrible mood. Two of my friends had gone to the movies the night before and hadn’t invited me. I was in my room thinking of ways to make them sorry when my father came in. “Want to go for a ride, today, Beck? It’s a beautiful day.”
“No! Leave me alone!” Those were the last words I said to him that morning.
My friends called and invited me to go to the mall with them a few hours later. I forgot to be mad at them and went. I came home to find a note on the table. My mother put it where I would be sure to see it. “Dad has had an accident. Please meet us at Highland Park Hospital”.
When I reached the hospital, my mother came out and told me my father’s injuries were extensive. “Your father told the driver to leave him alone and just call 911, thank God! If he had moved Daddy, there’s no telling what might have happened. A broken rib(肋骨) might have pierced(穿透) a lung....”
My mother may have said more, but I didn’t hear. I didn’t hear anything except those terrible words: Leave me alone. My dad said them to save himself from being hurt more. How much had I hurt him when I hurled those words at him earlier in the day?
It was several days later that he was finally able to have a conversation. I held his hand gently, afraid of hurting him.
“Daddy... I am so sorry....”
“It’s okay, sweetheart. I’ll be okay.”
“No,” I said, “I mean about what I said to you that day. You know, that morning?”
My father could no more tell a lie than he could fly. He looked at me and said, “Sweetheart, I don’t remember anything about that day, not before, during or after the accident. I remember kissing you goodnight the night before, though.” He managed a weak smile.
My English teacher once told me that words have immeasurable power. They can hurt or they can heal. And we all have the power to choose our words. I intend to do that very carefully from now on.

A. Because he didn’t go along with his father.
B. Because he was rude to his father that morning.

( )72. The reason why the author’s father said he forgot everything about that day is that___.
A. he had a poor memory B. he didn’t want to forgive his son
C. he just wanted to comfort his son D. he lost his memory after the accident

In the past year, the number of parenting contracts-statements signed by parents agreeing to bring their child to school-has gone up by 41% to 6,861. The number of court-issued penalty notices went up by 12% to 7,793 last year.
The Department for Children, Schools and Families said that part of the rise was due to a crackdown on parents taking their child out of school during term time to go on holiday. The Labour government has a target to cut truancy(逃学) by a third, but the current rate of unauthorised absence in England is a third higher than in 2001.
The government has introduced tough new sanctions to force parents to tackle their child’s truancy. Parents can be fined, asked to sign contracts, or ordered to make their child go to school. Ultimately they can face custodial sentences. The first parent to be jailed was Patricia Amos, from Banbury, Oxfordshire, in 2006. Separate figures from the Ministry of Justice today reveal that 133 parents were jailed between 2004 and 2011 for failing to prevent their child’s truancy.
Children’s minister Delyth Morgan said: "It’s important that we back schools and local authorities in using these powers to tackle problem absentees and bad behaviour. They rightly make parents take responsibility for their children. These latest figures show that schools and local authorities continue to make good use of these measures".
David Laws, the Liberal Democrat education spokesman, said: "While parents need to take responsibility for their children’s behaviour and have an obligation to ensure they attend school, the government’s draconian strategy is failing. Truancy rates across the country remain sky high. What is needed is a more effective lecal approach involving parents, schools and the police. Extra money to cut class sizes and provide more one-to-one support will enable teachers to work with individual children and make sure that they are occupied in the classroom.”

People have been passionate about roses since the beginning of time.In fact, it is said that the floors of Cleopatra's palace were carpeted with delicate rose petals, and that the wise and knowing Confucius had a 600-book library specifically, on how to care roses.
The rose is a legend on its own. The story goes that during the Roman Empire, there was an incredibly
beautiful maiden named Rhodanthe. Her beauty drew many zealous suitors who pursued her . Exhausted by their pursuit, Rhodanthe was forced to take refuge from her suitors in the temple of her friend Diana. Unfortunately, Diana became jealous. And when the suitors broke down her temple gates to get near their beloved Rhodanthe, she became angry turning Rhodanthe into a rose and her suitors into thorns.
In Greek legend, the rose was created by Chiloris, the Greek goddess of flowers. It was just a lifeless seed of a nymph that Chloris found one day in a clearing.in the woods. She asked the help of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, who gave her beauty.Dionysus, the god of wine, added nectar to gove her a sweet scent, and the three Graces gave her charm, brightness and joy: hen Zephyr, the West Wind, blew away the clouds so that Apollo, the sun god, could shine and made this flower bloom. And so the Rose was born and was immediately crowned the
Queen of Flowers.
The first true primary red rose seen in Europe was "Slater's Crimson China" introduced in 1792 from China, where it had been growing wild in the mountains.Immediately, rose breeders began using it to hybridize red roses for cultivation.Ever since, the quest for the perfect red rose has been the dream of rose gardeners: formed rose with a clear non-fading vivid red color.Absolute perfection still hasn't been attained, and of course never will!

People born in the winter are more likely to suffer mental health disorders, according to a recent study carried out by researchers at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee。
Researchers raised baby mice from birth to weaning in either "summer" light cycles of 16 hours of light and eight hours of dark or "winter" cycles of eight hours of light and 16 hours of dark. A third group experienced 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark a day。
Then half the winter mice stayed in a winter cycle, while half switched to a summer schedule. The summer mice were similarly split. The mice raised in equal periods of light and dark were split into three groups, one of which stayed on the 12-hour schedule, one of which joined the winter group, and one of which joined the summer subset。
After 28 days, it turns out the summer-born mice behaved the same whether they stayed on the summer cycle or switched to winter. But among the winter-born mice, those stayed in winter kept their 10-hours-on, 14-hours-off schedule, while whose that switched to summer stayed active for an extra hour and a half, which indicates that mice born and weaned in a winter light cycle showed dramatic disruptions in their biological clocks。
The finding is the first of its kind in mammals, and it could explain why people born in the winter are at higher risk for mental health disorders including bipolar depression, schizophrenia and seasonal affective disorder。
"We know that the biological clock regulates mood in humans," said study researcher McMahon. "If an imprinting mechanism similar to the one that we found in mice operates in humans, then it could not only have an effect on a number of behavioral disorders, but also have a more general effect on personality."
( )31.How many groups of mice are there finally in all in the experiment?
A. four B. five C .six D .seven
( )32.What’s the main idea of the text?
A .The biological clock regulates mood in humans
B .People born in the winter are at higher risk for physical health disorders

( )35.Who is the appropriate reader of the passage?

Making Peace with Your Parents
As a teen, you’re going through big changes physically and mentally. Your interests are expanding. Here is the challenge:Kids need to explore the world in new ways, and parents need to protect them from the dangers that all out in that world. These conflicts can easily set off fireworks in otherwise calm houses. Sometimes conflicts can’t be avoided. But by paying attention to the building blocks of successful relationships, you can work towards making home a happy and healthy place for you and your parents.
For instance, try to find a time to talk when your parents all not angry, tired, distracted, or hungry. A good time to talk is when you’re all relaxed. Timing is everything. If the conversation begins to turn into an argument, you’d better calmly and coolly ask to stop the conversationListen to what your parents are saying, and repeat it back to them. This shows them that you’re listening.Respect is the building block of good communication. People who respect each other and care about each others’ feelings call disagree without things getting ugly.
How do you build trust? Trust comes by actually doing what you say you’re going to do. Some teens find that doing fun activities with their parents can improve their relationships. Sometimes we forget that parents are more than rule-makers--they’re interesting people who like to watch movies. And go shopping--just like their teenagers!
What do you do if you are trying your best, but your relationship with your parents continues to be rocky? Remember you can only change your own behavior. Your parents are the only ones who can change theirs.
