六、阅读理解(共15小题;共30分)

A

On Thanksgiving Day, a teacher asked her class of first-graders to draw a picture of something they were thankful for. She thought that these children from poor families actually had little to be thankful for. And she found most of them drawing pictures of flowers or tables with food. The teacher was very surprised to see the picture Douglas handed in. It's a hand, a simple hand.

But whose hand? The class were very interested in the strange picture. "I think it must be the hand of God that brings us food," said one child. "A farmer," said another, "because he grows beautiful flowers." Finally when the others were at work, the teacher went over Douglas' desk and asked whose hand it was. "It's your hand, Teacher," he said quietly and shyly.

She remembered that she had often taken Douglas, a dirty lonely child, by the hand while having a class break. She often did that with the children. But it meant so much to Douglas. Perhaps this is everyone's thanksgiving, not for the

material things we get, but for the chance, in whatever small way, to give to others.

"Be proud of what you do," my father always told me, "whether you are a boss or a cleaner." When I was 15, I got a summer job in a hospital. I was told that my duties would include sweeping floors. I smiled and remembered Dad's words. Even though my job was the lowest, it made me feel excited. I saw it as a challenge because it was my first job. I learned to be on time and tried to do everything well. In return, I was treated with respect by doctors, nurses and patients. Each morning I imagined that the dirty dishes would make patients more sick if I were not there to wash them clean. After breakfast was done, I started sweeping the floors of all patient rooms and cleaning toilets. Though I was tired, I wanted the job to be done well. People would say, "That young boy really does a good job." That gave me a pride.

Working in the hospital taught me that being proud of one's job is important. It does not matter whether the job is sweeping floors or managing a large business. Through every job I have ever had, my father's words have always stayed with me. I have swept floors, and I have been a manager. I think Dad would be proud of me.

A New Way to Save Water

Water costs money. In some places water is hard to get. What happens when a town has these problems? A small town in California found a happy answer.

There was very little rain there. The town had no water of its own. The water it used was brought in from a river 300 miles away. As more people came to live in the town, more water was needed. And more water had to be carried in from 600 miles away. All this cost a great many of money.

Then the town made a plan. It found a way to clean its "dirty" water. After the water was cleaned, it could be used again in many ways. For example, it could be used to fill the five man-made lakes. In the lakes people could swim and fish and go boating. People could have picnics around the new lakes. Farmers would have more water for their plants. New factories would be built.

In most places, used water goes to the river. Many places will have less water when more people move there.

八、阅读与表达(问答式)(共5小题;共10分)

My Dad was a fisherman, and he loved the sea. He had his own boat, but it was hard making a living on the sea. When the weather was bad, he would drive me to school. When we arrived, he would give me a big kiss on the cheek and tell me to be a good boy. It was so embarrassing for me. Here, I was 12 years old, and my Dad would lean over and kiss me goodbye!

I remember the day when I decided I was too old for a goodbye kiss. When we got to the school and came to a stop, he had his usual big smile. He started to lean toward me, but I put my hand up and said, "No, Dad." It was the first time I had ever talked to him that way, and he had this surprised look on his face. I said, "Dad, I'm too old for a goodbye kiss. I'm too old for any kind of kiss." My Dad looked at me for the longest time, and his eyes started to tear up. I had never seen him cry. He turned and looked out the windshield (挡风玻璃).

"You're right," he said. "You are a big boy....a man. I won't kiss you anymore." It wasn't long after that when my Dad went to sea and never came back. It was a day when most of the fleet stayed in, but not Dad. He had a big family to feed.

I don't know what I would give to have my Dad give me just one more kiss on the cheek... to feel his rough old face... to smell the ocean on him... to feel his arm around my neck. I wish I had been a man then. If I had been a man, I would never have told my Dad I was too old for a goodbye kiss.
