participants a happy and meaningful stay in China, brief as it may be. Thank you very much for your kind attention. I hope I have not tired you out so much as to prevent you from enjoying the reception which follows this opening session. 40. Thank you, Director General Han, for those opening remarks. It’s an honor to be

co-hosting with you the “First US-China Forum on Sustainable Energy and the Environment”. This meeting, which we hope is the first of many discussions between US and Chinese government and business officials, is a unique opportunity to exchange ideas and discuss areas of cooperation in the fields of energy and the environment, the two biggest challenges facing our countries in the 21st century. 41. I recall gazing around open-mouthed when I went with my wife on a holiday to

Shanghai to see the general prosperity. I think at that time almost half the tall cranes in the world were actually in Shanghai, building these vast edifices. The giddy pace of development is likely to continue, in spite of the downside of increased pollution, which affects Hong Kong of course, the demographic problems and the problems of uneven development. Shanghai is not the whole of China. 42. There are a lot more wonderful and exciting events waiting for you in the New Beijing,

a modern metropolis with 3,000 years of cultural treasures woven into the urban tapestry. Along with the iconic imagery of the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the Great Wall, the city also offers an endless mixture of theatres, museums, discos, all kinds of restaurants and shopping malls which will amaze you and delight you.

43. We have gone down a different path and the possibility for engaging with this country in

wider issues of mutual benefit and of common interest for the whole world puts United Kingdom in an interesting position. We are by far the most open of all the high-income countries. If we have time, perhaps we can talk a bit more later about the degree of our openness. Just today, GE has bought Wood, which is one of the most important manufacturers in its niche in oilfield services sector. Just very day there is a story of this kind, which is not a good or a bad thing, but it differentiates us sharply from Germany and to some degree from France. 44. Tourism has become the leading driver of a number of our economies over the past two

decades. Despite our concerted efforts, much more has to be done with regard to changing attitudes so that our people recognize the importance of the agricultural industry and its potential, if efficiently run, to generate profits. This linage must not only be seen in the light of Member States supplying goods for their own markets, but also the breadbasket for other developing countries in the region. 45. I want to thank all who participated in this historic summit --- 49 leaders from every

region of the world. Today’s progress was possible because these leaders came not simply to talk, but to take actions; not simply to make vague pledges of future action, but to commit to meaningful steps that they are prepared to implement right now. 46. In 2009, China’s imports totaled US$1.0056 trillion, and its trade surplus dropped by

US$102 billion. In the first seven months of this year, China’s imports reached US$766.6 billion, a surge of 47.2 percent year-on-year and the trade surplus was reduced by US$22.6 billion year-on-year. 47. Generally speaking, from the companies that we see coming to this, their level of

knowledge is incredibly basic to begin with and that is a risk to the UK if UK business people do not understand what is going on in the second largest economy in the world. So, somehow, through many different means --- and I think it is through multiple means --- we have got to improve the knowledge of what is going on in China and Asia more generally in our country. 48. During the past decade, you have made massive investments in your universities,

strengthening the most excellent of those institutions while broadening access to higher education from less than 5 percent to more than 15 percent of your college-age population. Your nation’s focus on education has contributed substantially to your historically unprecedented success in lifting more than 200 million of your citizens out of poverty in the past quarter century. 49. The first three set out priorities for action in the fields of development, security and

human rights, respectively, while the last deals with global institutions --- mainly the United Nations itself, which must be, as the Millennium Declaration says, “a more effective instrument” for pursuing those priorities. 50. Their sportsmanship and team spirit have inspired us all, and allowed us to believe that

anything is possible. It is my deepest wish that you will take the spirit of the Asian Games, the ideals of fair play, tolerance and understanding, back to your homes and continue to spread these important messages. 51. I think the biggest challenge for SMEs is lack of resource in the broader sense: both

money and number of hours in the day. SME business owners tend to be pulled in multiple directions. And that is the biggest challenge in the context of China, because it is a long way

away; it costs a great deal of money to develop the market. You do need to build those relationships that were mentioned earlier, and that requires a huge amount of investment, both timewise and capitalwise. But there are good opportunities.

52. We each do the piece that we do best --- as we’re doing, for example, in support of

Ghana’s food security plan, which will help more farmers get more goods to market and earn more money to support their families. 53. The challenges we face will be familiar to all of you: seismic shifts on global media; the

Internet making everything global; fierce competition from media outlets that wouldn’t have registered a few years ago; new technologies creating rapid changes in audience expectations --- not least to contribute and take part and to consume when and how they choose. 54. I want to thank all who participated in this historic summit --- 49 leaders from every

region of the world. Today’s progress was possible because these leaders came not simply to talk, but to take actions; not simply to make vague pledges of future action, but to commit to meaningful steps that they are prepared to implement right now. 55. And there has been no sector of our societies that have been stronger proponents of

US-China relations than the business sector. And so I’m very pleased that we have some of America’s top businesses here. Many of them have a longstanding relationship with China; have been selling American goods, promoting American services in China. And they, I think, can testify to the benefits that the United States obtains from strong relations with China. 56. We’ve got some Chinese business leaders here, who I know are already doing business

in the United States, making investments in the United States, and helping grow the economy here in the United States. I know they’re interested in finding ways that they can expand their activities in the United States. 57. I make proposals for enabling the Economic and Social Council, whose functions are

clearly relevant to our all-important development agenda, to play the leading role that should be expected of it, in making and implementing coherent United Nations policies for development. 58. Today, with the ever-increasing applications of core technology of the new generation of

Web 2.0 mode of information communication represented by blogs, tags, SNS, RSS and wiki, we deeply feel that Internet information technology is propelling the changes of technical approaches, functional structures and pattern modes to further change the transformation of the modes of the operation of society. 59. As Canada’s third largest metropolitan city after Toronto and Montreal, Vancouver is an

important industrial, financial and business center. While forestry remains its largest industry, it is well known as an urban center surrounded by nature, making tourism its second-largest industry. It is also the third-largest film production center in North America after Los Angeles and New York City, earning its film industry the nickname Hollywood North. 60. Over time, expenses and fees can really make a difference. On an investment held for 20

years, a one percent annual fee will reduce the ending account balance by 18 percent. Say you started out with $10,000. And you averaged a 12 percent return for 20 years. That percent higher fee just cost you $14,000. You could have had $78,000, but instead you $64,000. That’s pretty good, but what did you get for those higher fees? That is the $64,000 dollar question.
