smoke alarm go off. He went downstairs quickly to investigate. When he opened the door to the basement(地

下室), flames exploded out.

Donald fled(逃)back upstairs to call 911 but the phone didn’t work. When he tried to go downstairs, he was stopped by a wall of flames. He had to use a towel to cover his mouth. His house was about three miles off the main road and so well hidden by trees that Donald knew calling for help would be useless. Actually, he didn’t even try to do that.

About one mile away lived Donald’s closest neighbor, Jeremie. When he heard some sounds, Jeremie jumped out of bed, holding a phone and a flashlight, and went towards the noise. He dialed 911 the instant he saw the flames. When he came close to the house, Jeremie knew he’d better wait until rescuers came. But he didn’t want Donald to die in the fire.

Without hesitation(犹豫), he rushed into the house. He shouted, “Donald, where are you? ”Then he had to run outside to catch his breath. After one more attempt(尝试), he gave up and circled around back. He saw Donald on the second-floor balcony, but there was no way to get to him. Suddenly, he noticed a ladder. He dragged it over to the balcony and pulled Donald down just when the second floor fell down.

I was in a strange city and I didn’t know the city at all. And

what is more, I could not speak a word of the language after

having spent my first day in the town center. I decided to lose

my way on my second day, since I was sure that this was the

better way of getting to know the strange city. I got on the first bus in the morning, rode on it for several stops, then got off it and walked on. The first two hours passed happily enough, then I decided to turn back to my hotel for lunch. After walking about for some time, I decided I had better ask the way. The trouble was that the only word I know of the language was the name of the street in which I lived and even that I pronounced badly.

I stopped to ask a friendly looking newspaper seller. He smiled and handed me a paper. I shook my head and repeated the name of the

street and he put the paper into my hands. I had to give him some money and went on my way. Then I met a policeman. I asked him at once. The policeman listened to me carefully, smiled and took me by the arm. There was a strange look in his eyes as he pointed left and right and left again. I thanked him politely and began walking on.

About an hour passed and I found that the houses were getting fewer and fewer and green fields could be seen on either side of me, I had come all the way into the country. The thing left for me to do was to find the nearest bus station.

A school bus is one that is used to take children to and

from school. In the USA, about 450, 000 school buses take more than 25 million children to and from school. The yellow school bus is a US icon(象征). Yellow became the color of school buses in the USA in 1939. Dr. Frank got the good idea. He said it was easy for people to see yellow buses and the black letters on them in early morning or late afternoon. That would make children safer.

There are not many school buses in Britain, and they are not yellow. They have trackers(跟踪器)on them, so kids are being tracked while they travel to and from school by bus. The trackers let parents know where the school bus is and whether their kids are on the bus.

Kindergarten is difficult time for some kids. It’s the first time for them to go away from their parents. To make kids love their school, Japanese kindergartens and schools have colorful buses. The buses can easily make children want to take them—and then, go to school. Even some parents want to take them, too!

Sydney is Australia’s most exciting c ity. The history of

Australia begins here. In 1788 Captain Arthur Phillips arrived in Sydney with 11 ships and 1, 024 passengers(including 770 prisoners)from Britain. Today there are 2. 5 million people in Sydney. It is the biggest city in Australia, and one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

There are over 20 fine beaches close to Sydney. Its warm summer and cool winter have made it a favorite city for immigrants(移民)from overseas. There are three things that make Sydney famous—its beautiful harbor, the Sydney Harbor Bridge, and the Sydney Opera House.

But there are many more interesting things in Sydney: beautiful shops and restaurants, for example, rows of interesting old houses built everywhere in the 19th century. Summer or winter, day or night, Sydney is an outdoor city.

Some Americans think it is very British. Some British visitors think it is like America. There is some truth in both these opinions, because Sydney takes from both the Old World—Europe, and the New World—America, and makes itself into something that is neither British nor American but truly Australian.

Simple ways to get happy

We’re not suggesting that you can reach a permanent state called “happiness” and remain there. But there are many ways to turn the path of anxiety, anger, and sadness into a state of happiness. Here are four ideas to get you started. 36.

1. Laugh out loud.

Just expecting a happy, funny event can raise levels of pleasure-causing hormones(荷尔蒙)and lower production of stress hormones. Researchers at the University of California tested 16 men who all agreed they thought a certain videotape was funny. Half were told three days in advance they would watch it.

37. When they actually watched the video, their levels of stress hormones dropped greatly, while their levels of pleasure-causing

hormones rose 27%.

2. Do one thing at a time.

Edward Suarez, professor of medical psychology at Duke, found that people who do several things at the same time are more likely to have high blood pressure.

38. Instead of talking on the phone while cleaning the kitchen, sit down in a comfortable chair and turn your entire attention over to the conversation.

3. 39

Although relationships help take away stress, sometimes you need time to recharge and reflect on your own. Take yourself out to lunch or to a movie, or simply spend an afternoon reading at home, or looking through books in a bookstore.

4. Practice mindfulness.

40Instead of worrying about your check-up tomorrow while having dinner with your family, focus on the here and now—the food, the company(伙伴), and the conversation.

A. Spend time alone.

B. Be in the moment.

C. Take care of the soul.

D. Take that finding to heart.
