It seems that everybody tells lies(谎言)— well, not big lies, but what we call ―white lies‖. Telling white lies isn’t that bad. Most of the time, people do it because they want to protect a friendship. Some studies show that the average person lies about seven times a day. The only real questions are about when we lie and who we tell lies to. A recent study found that people often say something

different from the facts. Here are some ways they do it.

Lying to hide something:

People often lie because they want to hide something from someone. For example, a son doesn’t tell his parents

that he’s dating (约会) a girl because he doesn’t think they will like her. So he says he’s going out with the boys.

Giving false excuses:

Sometimes people lie because they don’t want to do something. For example, someone invites you to a party. You

think it will be boring, so you say you’re busy.

Lying to make someone feel good:

Often we say something different from the facts to make someone feel good. For example, your friend cooks

dinner for you, but it tastes terrible. Do you say so? No! You probably say, ―Mmm, this is delicious!‖

Lying to hide bad news:

Sometimes we don’t want to tell someone bad news. For example, you have just had a very bad day at work, but you don’t feel like talking about it. So if someone asks you about your day, you just say all was fine.

True or False(判断下列句子是否符合短文内容,符合的用“T”表示,不符合的用“F”表示): ( 6分)

78. White lies are usually big lies.

79. People tell white lies in different ways.

80. Young people may tell white lies to hide something from their parents.

81. People sometimes tell white lies to refuse invitations politely.

82. When you taste something terrible, you may tell a white lie to make the host happy.

83. From the passage we learn that white lies are harmful to friendship.

Julia Hill, an American woman, was born in 1974. She was 23 years old when she discovered that a company wanted to cut down part of a forest in California. In the forest there were lots of redwood trees. One of the trees was 70 metres tall and 1,000 years old.

Julia wasn’t happy about this. She traveled to California and climbed up the tree. ―If I sit in the tree,‖ she said, ―the company can’t cut it down.‖ At the beginning, Julia planned to stay in the tree for two weeks. She lived in a small tree-house and her friends were very helpful — they cooked food for her every day. She used her mobile phone to talk to her family and to news reporters. She stayed in the tree day and night.

Environmental organizations supported her, but other people weren’t on her side and they tried to stop her. The company used a helicopter that stayed near her tree-house for a long time. The helicopter was very noisy and there was a lot of wind. Julia didn’t like it, but she stayed in the tree.

They didn’t have a washing machine so they had to wash their clothes by hand, and they had to use the toilet outside in the garden. But the family didn’t have to go shopping. , the TV company did all their shopping for them. There were inside the house to make videos of the family’s everyday life, and the Browns talked on television about their experiences. Lives of children are not the same around the world. Children in rich countries like Germany live differently from children in poor countries like Sierra Leone in Africa.

A good German breakfast consists of rolls, jam, cheese, hard-boiled eggs, cold meat and milk. Lunch is the main meal of the day and it is the heaviest! Dinner is thought to be a lighter meal than lunch.

German children start their education at a young age. Subjects are taught in German but children also study English as their second language. In addition, many German children study a third language such as French.

In Germany, cycling and swimming are popular activities among children. Families also like to go for walks in the forest in warmer seasons. In winter, they often go skiing or take a holiday in a country with warmer weather.

In contrast, the poor children in Sierra Leone live mainly on rice. They do not always have meat or eggs. The children also have to wake up around three o’clock in the morning to fetch water.

Most girls do not go to school as they are needed at home. They must cook and do other housework. Families in Sierra Leone are usually very large and older girls are expected to care for their younger brothers or sisters.

―I can’t believe this is happening.‖ I thought as I saw Jane walk into the restaurant. She hadn’t changed at all. She was still tall and beautiful, with wavy blonde hair and bright green eyes. I smiled and thought of how my life had changed since we had last met.

It all started when I noticed her at a party in a friend’s house. I followed her to the dining-room and started talking to her about the food. ―You seem very interested in food, she laughed. ―Well, I’m a great cook,‖ I told her. It was a lie, but I had to find an excuse to see her again. ―Why don’t I cook you dinner sometime?‖

Two days later, Jane came to my house. However, the dinner party was very embarrassing. I ordered food from a nearby restaurant, but I told her that I had cooked it. After dinner, she offered to wash up and found the delivery boxes in the kitchen. She laughed at me and I felt awful. Angry with myself, I decided then and there to learn how to cool.

I never saw Jane after our terrible dinner date. I started a cooler course and found that I was good at it after all. I went on to train to be a great cook. I worked hard and saved up until I was able to open my own restaurant.

Now, she had walked into my restaurant. Feeling very happy, I pretended I was a waiter and walked to her table. ―Ready to order, madam?‖ I asked.

I was positive that I’d miss the plane, so I turned on the radio and tried to get used to the idea. Soon there was a loud knock at the window. It was my first time on a motorcycle so I was terrified. The young man drove so fast that I kept my eyes tightly shut all the way. Suddenly the motorcycle came to a halt. ―We’re here!‖ he said. Daily News

A 14-year-old boy from the USA was described as a hero yesterday after he saved the life of a woman in another country.

Dean Bluey from Dallas, Texas, was a school boy who was interested in computer. One day, he was sending an e-mail to a friend on the Internet. Suddenly he received a message saying ―Help! Pain! Help!‖ The message was from Finland(芬兰), thousands of kilometres away from the USA.

―I didn’t know what I should do,‖ Dean said to a reporter afterwards. ―It was really difficult to tell if the message was real.‖ So Dean did nothing at first. But the message kept coming.

―By then it was easy to see that someone was in trouble,‖ Dean explained. He replied and discovered that the sender was a 20-year-old student called Tarja, who was alone in a university library. She was very ill. What was worse, there was no phone around her. Her only way of communicating with the world was by e-mail.

Dean got in touch with the Texas police. The police immediately realized that the situation was quite serious. They found it necessary to telephone the police in Finland. Then an ambulance rushed to the university, and soon doctors found Tarja. Luckily, she was still alive and was quickly sent to the hospital.

―I’m glad she’s OK,‖ Dean said. ―It’s hard to believe, but e-mail saved her life.‖

Have you ever had an embarrassing (尴尬)experience? Last week we asked readers to tell us about embarrassing experiences. We received thousands of letters! Here is a selection.

Tony:

My most embarrassing experience happened when I had just left university. I had just started teaching in a Liverpool secondary school. One morning my alarm clock didn’t ring. I woke up at half past eight and school began at nine. I quickly washed, dressed, jumped into my car and rushed to school. When I arrived, the students had already gone into class. I didn’t go to the office, but went straight into class. After two or three minutes the students began laughing, and I couldn’t understand why! Suddenly I looked down and understood. I had put on one black shoe and one brown shoe!

Henry: The most embarrassing experience I’ve ever had, happened two years ago. After seeing a film, my wife and I had lunch in our favourite restaurant in town. Then we decided to take a walk along the street. The street was very busy and we started holding hands. Suddenly my wife saw a dress that she liked in a shop window, and stopped. I started looking at some watches in the next window. After a minute or two I reached for my wife’s hand. There was a loud scream, and a woman slapped my face. I hadn’t taken my wife’s hand. I’d taken the hand of a complete stranger!

James:

My wife and I had decided to buy a new house, and I’d made an appointment to see our bank manager. I’d never met him before and I was a bit nervous. I went into town in my car and I was lucky enough to find a parking space outside the bank. I’d just started reversing (倒车)into the space when another car made its way into it. I was irritated! I opened my window and shouted at the man in the car. He ignored me and walked away. It took me twenty minutes to find another space. As soon as I had parked the car, I rushed back to the bank. I was ten minutes late for my appointment. I went to the manager’s office, knocked and walked in. The manager was sitting behind his desk. He was the man who

Kyra Komac, 28 years old, now has 25 furniture stores all over the country. The new store, in London’s Camden High Street, takes her back to where it all started. She tells us about how the business began.

When I was little, may mother began selling flowers in Camden Market. She couldn’t leave me at home on my own, so I had to go to the market with her.

To begin with, I didn’t have to do anything. I just sat there, and my mum told me jokes and stories so I didn’t get bored. When I got older, I gave my mum a hand and I really enjoyed it.

Then, one year, my grandma gave me a book for Christmas. It was all about making candles and I loved it. I was 14, and I didn’t have to go to the market any more because mum could leave me at home on my own. I spent my free time making candles of all shapes and sizes. I made hundreds of them.

One day, my mother was ill so I had to go to the market on my own. I decided to take some candles with me and see if I could sell them. They were sold out in twenty minutes! The next week, my mum gave me some money to buy some wax to make more candles. They sold out really quickly, too.

Nine months later, we decided to stop selling flowers. My mum and I couldn’t make enough candles during the week, so some of my school friends started to help us. I paid them one pound for every candle, and we used to sell them for three or four times that. It was fun and my friends worked with me in the market.

At the age of 22, my uncle lent me some money and I opened my first shop in Portobello Road. Since then, I’ve never looked back, even in difficulties. In the first store, we only sold candles, but now we sell everything from designer furniture to paintings. Oh, and candles, of course.
