When my son, Mark, was in the third grade, he saved all his pocket money for over three months to buy holiday presents. The third Saturday in December Mark said he had made his list and had twenty dollars in his pocket.
I drove him to a nearby supermarket. Mark picked up a hand basket and went in while I waited and watched in the car. It took Mark over 45 minutes to choose his presents. On the first day of the new term in 2012, thousands of students in Chongming county (县) in Shanghai took the new school buses to school.
The new school buses are yellow with huge bonnets (引擎盖) in the front. Students call them “big nose” school buses.
The local government spent 6 million yuan buying 17 new school buses for the primary and middle schools in the county to make sure of the safety of more than 1,000 students who live in the countryside, where ordinary buses didn’t go.
This new kind of school bus has alarms, on-board cameras and seats specially designed for school children. They are much safer than minivans or older buses that were used in this county before.
“'Big nose' looks very beautiful, and it makes me feel safe,” said Liu Mengqing, a fourth-year student of Xinhai School.
Liu said that in the old school buses, there was no air conditioner and every two or three children shared one seat.
“The new buses are sturdy enough so that parents shouldn't be worried about their children,” said Zhang Zhongli, the father of a student.

Steven Jobs, the designer of Apple Computer, was not quite successful in his early years. At that time, he was not among the best students at school, and he often got into trouble with either his schoolmates or his teachers.
