In Britain. Boxing Day is usually celebrated on December 26th, which is the following day after
Christmas Day. However, strictly speaking, Boxing Day is the first weekday after Christmas. Like Christmas Day, Boxing Day is a public holiday. This means it's a non-working day in the whole of Britain. When Boxing Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the following Monday is the public holiday.
The exact origin(起源)of the holiday is unclear. One of the thoughts is that during the Middle Ages, when great sailing ships were setting off to discover new land, a Christmas Box was placed by a priest(神父)on each ship. Those sailors who wanted to ensure a safe return would drop money into the box. It was sealed up and kept on board until the ship came home safely. Then the box was handed over to the priest in exchange for the saying of a mass of thanks for the success of the sailing. The priest wouldn't open it to share the contents with the poor until Christmas.
One more thought is about the "Alms Box" placed in every church on Christmas Day. Worshippers(做礼拜的人) put gifts for the poor into it. These boxes were always opened the day after Christmas. That is why that day became known as Boxing Day.
Today, many businesses, organizations and families try to keep the traditional spirit of Boxing Day alive by donating(捐赠) their time, services and money to aid Food Banks, providing gifts for the poor, or helping families in need. Besides, spending time with family and shopping are popular Boxing Day activities now.

It seems that more and more Americans want schools to teach foreign languages to children under five years old. The most popular way to teach young children another language is called immersion (沉浸式语言教学法). Children in the immersion program hear only the new language in the classroom. The children play games, sing songs and talk to one another in the new language. Some experts (家)say the immersion program is the most effective (有效的) for young children to learn a language. But there can be a problem when children in the United States begin to learn another language at such an early age. Not many elementary schools continue to teach a foreign language. Why does the sky change colors?
What is the sky? How high is it? What color is it? What birds can live above it? These questions are difficult to answer, aren't they?
In fact, the sky has no color. Then why does the sky look blue?
We know that there is air around the world. When planes fly, they need air to lift their wings. Planes can't fly very high. That is because the air gets thinner when they go higher. The same will happen to us if we go high enough. If we go up about 1, 200 kilometers from the earth, we'll find no air there. Some birds can fly into the sky as high as a plane, but they cannot fly or live without air.
Looking up above us, you will see the blue sky with white clouds. It is usually light blue. The color would be bluer when you see on the top of a high mountain. And you will see fewer clouds in the sky between you and the sun.
Sometimes the sky doesn't look blue. When the sun rises and falls, you will see red, orange, and other colors in the sky. Such are the most beautiful moments of the day.
Who can see the colors of the sky high above the earth? The astronauts! They can see those beautiful colors of the sky from the outer space. However, before flying into outer space, they sit in a spaceship high above the earth, and there is no air at all. The sky would be that dark and its color would be black.
Now you may understand that we see colors because the air scatters(使散射) the sunlight.
light travels through the air. Without air, there would be no light or colors.

What can we learn from the special, very successful people in the world who make the impossible possible?
Lesson 1: Ways of creative thinking are needed
Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg both dropped out of college. They prefer to teach themselves because they like to develop their own ways of thinking. They think standard ways of teaching might stop people from being creative and having new ideas.
Lesson 2: The answer might not be what you expect
Find your answers from facts-not start with an expectation of what you will find. Stephen Jacobsen believed what he was taught: that water on Earth came from icy comets(封星) or planets which hit into Earth.
However, by studying a special rock, he discovered that it acted like a sponge(海绵). This suggested that Earth's water might have come from inside, driven to the surface to form the oceans, by geological activity.
"I had a pretty hard time making others believe it, "he said. "But thinking about the fact that you may be the first person to see something for the first time doesn't happen very often. When it does, it's amazing."
Lesson 3: A little luck goes a long way
Years of planning went into a recent achievement in space travel. The European Space Agency's "Philae", a robot landing craft, met up with Comet 67P, which was 480 million kilometres away. The trip from Earth by "Philae" had taken ten years!
The scientists had no idea what the surface of the comet would be like. If the landing failed, it would be impossible to get information from the spacecraft. Twenty years of work would have been wasted.
When "Philae" tried to land, it bounced(弹起)away from the comet's icy surface twice. Luckily, however, "Philae" landed successfully and began sending information back to Earth. (1)Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg left college because____________.
A. they preferred to learn by themselves
B. they needed standard ways of teaching
C. their teachers didn't like their new ideas
D. their teachers weren't able to teach them
(2)In Lesson 2, the writer mainly wants to tell us that___________.
A. we should get answers from facts
B. we can believe what we are taught
C. it's hard to make others believe something
D. an expectation can help get an answer in research
(3)The example of "Philae" in Lesson 3 shows that________.
A. Comet 67P was not far away from Earth
B. it took "Philae"2o years to reach Comet 67P
C. "Philae" landed on Comet 67P with a little luck
D. scientists know nothing about the surface of Comet 67P
(4)The best title for this passage is_____.

We often hear stories of animals rescuing people. But now someone has managed to return the favor.
The event took place on a snowy January morning. Thomas Smith was walking his dog, Jack, in the park. "As I was walking, I just saw Jack running into the ice towards the ducks in the middle, and then he fell into the water and couldn't climb out," said Smith. He realized he had no choice but to try and save his dog. "Someone else told me the lake was only one meter deep, but it was at least twice that. I had to break my way through the 6-cm ice. Finally, I got Jack by the neck and pulled him out. I didn't think I had ever felt so cold by the time we got back to dry land. And when we got there, everyone was asking if Jack was okay—no one was particularly worried about me!"
A neighbor, Julie Brown, saw it all happen. "The dog went onto an icy lake. All of a sudden, it started to go under. There were crowds of people around, and they were all shouting and screaming. Before I knew it, the owner (Smith) was in the water forcing his way through the ice, I couldn't imagine how cold it was. Everyone was very nervous, but he was as cool as a cucumber-he just crawled back out, put the dog on its lead, and went home.
Many regard him as a hero, but Mr. Smith is quite laid—back about it, "Most dog owners are the same as me. They would do what I did without a second thought. But in the future, I'm going to make sure he's on a lead near any icy pond.

Need to buy something? Why go to a store? Buy it on the Internet! Need it now? Why wait? Ask to receive it the next day! Each day, more and more people try on-line shopping. In fact,
online sales have doubled in the last ten years. But not everyone is excited. Some scientists now say that online shopping is bad for the environment.
People are surprised to hear this." They think, I don't need to drive, and the business doesn't need to build a store, so there will be less pollution," says Nuria Prost, an environmental scientist. "But it is not so simple. In fact, online shopping is wasteful. It also adds to air pollution."
In truth, the Internet is not always as good a friend to the environment as it seems. For example, most people thought that the Internet would help offices use less paper and other materials. But paper use increased by33percent between 1986 and 1997."Online shopping could have similarly harmful results," says Nevil Cohen, a researcher of environmental science. Part of the problem is what people are buying these days. In the past, people bought things on the Internet that did not require much packing material, such as books and clothing. But now people also shop online for large, heavy pro ducts such as televisions, computers, chairs and tables. These products need to be packed in lots of plastic and paper. This creates a lot of waste.
Another problem caused by online shopping is air pollution. When customers buy products and ask to receive them the next day, online businesses often have to send them by air. Airplanes use much more oil than cars and produce more carbon dioxide(二氧化碳). When people buy a lot of different things from different online businesses, this creates even more travel by airplane.
Online product returns are also a problem. For example, an online shoe store may allow customers to return shoes for free if they are wrong size. This doubles the packing materials and number of airline trips required to sell one pair of shoes.
"If people want to protect the environment, they need to think before they shop," says Prost. "People need to ask themselves: Is this exactly what I want? Do I really need it tomorrow, or can I wait?" Online stores can also ask customers to pay money for returns. This may make people shop more carefully." Online shopping is fast and easy, "says Prost," but we can't forget the harmful result it has caused to the environment."
(1)The passage begins with several questions to .
A. introduce the main topic

A. Large products need more packing materials.
B. Paper use increased by 33 percent about ten years.
C. Businesses need to build a store to sell the products.
D. Online shopping costs less than shopping in a store.
(4)What is probably the best title of the passage?
A. A Good Deal to Make
B. A Different Lifestyle to Keep

Anna was excited about starting her first day in the new school. However, when she first walked past the students in the school, her excitement turned to fear, and then to loneliness(孤独) over the next few days. "Why didn't anyone say 'hi' to me or invite me to his or her lunch table? Is it because of my clothes or my hair?" she wondered. Almost every day during the first week, Anna stayed alone, thinking that there must have been something wrong with her or that nobody saw her at all!
What caused Anna's problem? The reason was that nobody knew her. Most people don't like talking with strangers. So it's your job to volunteer to make contact with people who you want to know. The easiest way to catch their attention is to notice them first. Make eye contact with them, and smile at them. When you smile at them, you are doing your best to show your kindness to them, and they are sure to understand that you are saying, "Hey, how's everything going?" In this way, you are taking the first step towards the road to friendship.
When Anna realized this, she started talking to her classmates. Guess what happened? It really worked. She had made two friends by the end of the month.
In fact, saying "hi" or making friends with strangers is not hard. And the joy it brings you is really great. So try to open your heart to strangers!
(1)Which of the following shows the change in Anna's feelings?
