Facebook is “dead and buried” to older teenagers, an extensive European study has found, as the key age group moves on to Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp and Snapchat.
Researching the Facebook use of 16-18 year olds in eight EU countries, the Global Social Media Impact Study found that as parents and older users saturate(使充满)Facebook, its younger users are shifting to alternative platforms.
“Facebook is not just on the slide — it is basically dead and buried,” wrote Daniel Miller, lead an-

thropologist(人类学家)on the research team, who is professor of material culture of University College London. “Mostly they feel embarrassed to even be associated with it. Where once parents worried about their children joining Facebook, the children now say it is their family that insists they stay there to post about their lives.”
Teens do not care that alternative services are less functional and sophisticated, and they also unconcerned about how information about them is being used commercially or as part of surveillance(监视)practice by the security services, the research found.
“What appears to be the most influential moment in a young person?s decision to leave Facebook was surely that dreadful day your mum sends you a friend request,” wrote Miller. “It is nothing new that young people care about style and status in relation to their fellows, and Facebook is simply not cool anymore.”
In part of the study's research with Italian Facebook users, 40 % of users had never changed their privacy settings and 80% said they “were not concerned or did not care” if their personal data was available and accessed, either by an organisation or an individual.
Information that people choose to publish on Facebook has generally been through a psychological filtering process, researchers found unlike conversations, photos and video shared through more private tools such as Skype, or on mobile apps.
“Most individuals try to present themselves online the way they think society is expecting them to,” wrote contributing anthropologist Razvan Nicolescu on Thursday. “It seems that social media works not towards change of society, notions of individuality and connectedness, and so on — but rather as a conservative force that tends to strengthen the conventional social relations and to reify society as Italians enjoy and recognize it.”“The normativity of the online presence seems to be just one expression of this process.” 55. The reason why young people are shifting to alternative platforms is that ______. A. their mum might send them a friend request
B. they feel embarrassed to be associated with Facebook
C. young people care about style and status in relation to their peers
D. they are worried that their personal information is being used commercially 56. The underlined word “sophisticated” can be replaced by _______. A. secure B. steady C. cool D. complete 57. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Facebook is “dead and buried to teens” B. Parents Turn to Facebook C. Teens Follow the Crowd D. Facebook is on the Slide
58. What's Razvan Nicolescu's attitude towards this change in social media? A. subjective B. objective C. indifferent D. concerned

This year I decided to stop drinking coffee, my only source of caffeine. Anyone who knows me, especially my wife, will recognize this as a tough and extreme step. I've been drinking coffee since age 10, and I'd developed quite an addiction to the perfect cup.
In the past, I've experimented with quitting a few times by simply going cold turkey. Each time, the physical withdrawal, basically headaches, was over within 10 days, but after a month or two I would become convinced that coffee was good for my concentration and start drinking it again.
My reason to quit this time was the growing suspicion that coffee was causing mood swings and crashes that are bad for my overall sense of well-being. For this experiment I decided to stop very gradually. I thought that if I allowed the spsychological withdrawal to occur gradually alongside the physiological(生理的),I would be able to observe my “coffee-desire” without acting on it, and learn the skill I would need to avoid touching the cup again in future.
I made the same amount of coffee each day. Although I didn't measure caffeine content, I did control many factors including age of beans, water temperature and water/coffee contact time. From this controlled pot of coffee, I used measuring cups to throw away an additional 20ml per week. I used notebook software to keep some records
第 5 页 共 14 页
of my progress and I started with a 3 cup pot in mid-April. Towards the end of July I wrote “I am increasingly wanting to abandon this project altogether”, but I continued and in August I was down to a half glass per day, and decided I was done.
Over the past few days, I noticed myself increasingly thinking “I am having trouble concentrating and coffee might help”. These thoughts came to an end on Wednesday. This time, I was armed with data, I created a graph of my hours of concentration per day. One thing is very clear: based on my records, the amount of time I spend concentrating has not decreased since I quit coffee, so I can easily reject the wrong belief “I need coffee to help me concentrate”.
I see this as a success for self-quantifying. Whether or not it provides a general understanding of the effects of caffeine, it proves the use of self-tracking for making individualized personal decisions. 59. Why did the author decide to stop drinking coffee this year? A. Because it was a source of caffeine.
B. Because he had developed an addiction to it.
C. Because he was worried about its possible bad effects. D. Because coffee was causing mood swings and crashes.
60. By “going cold turkey” (in Para. 2), the writer means “_____”.
A. developing a new interest B. breaking the habit suddenly C. dining at a turkey restaurant D. drinking a cup of cold tea 61. Which factor resulted in the author's previous failure to kick the habit?
A. A lack of strong will. B. A state of low spirits.
C. A series of physical symptoms. D. A false concept about coffee. 62. What could be the best title for the passage? A. Effects of coffee. B. Success through statistics. C. An unforgettable experiment. D. Significance of determination

The Italian city of Venice, long known for its architecture, art, and canals, is sinking. The city sits on a chain of islands along the coast of the Adriatic Sea, a northern arm of the larger Mediterranean Sea. Every year, the buildings drop a little lower, and the sea rises a little higher. In a new study, scientists report that the sinking has slowed down in recent years, but it hasn't stopped.
Bock is ageodesist(大地测量师)at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. To measure Venice, Bock and his colleagues obtained the help of satellites. Some of the team's data came from a Canadian satellite called RADARSAT-1, which monitors environmental changes. Other data came from devices that use GPS, or the global positioning system. A machine that uses GPS can determine its exact location by communicating with satellites.
Soil beneath Venice is compacting (紧压在一起), which means particles (粒子)are getting squeezed closer together, the scientists say. As soil compacts, the city sinks. Bock and his colleagues determined that between the years 2000 and 2010 the city of Venice sank between 1 and 2 millimeters — a little more than the thickness of a compact disk every year. The city sank even more quickly in some neighboring areas.
Bock told Science News that Venice isn?t sinking as fast as it used to. Other coastal cities, like New Orleans, are sinking faster.
Tazio Strozi, a scientist who works with satellites in Gumligen, Switzerland, told Science News that 1 to 2 millimeters a year isn?t alarming. “We think this is a very small number,” he said.
Even a couple millimeters, however, does make a difference, says Bock. In the past 100 years, average sea level has been rising. In Venice, sometimes nicknamed the “City of Water”, rising seas increase the risk of flooding during storms. The city has had to find creative ways to keep ocean water from invading and destroying the art and architecture for which Venice has become famous. A few more millimeters could make that task even more difficult.
63. What is the cause of the sinking of Venice? A. The compacting soil under the city. B. The canals in the city.
第 6 页 共 14 页
C. Its environmental changes. D. Rising sea level. 64. According to the fifth paragraph, Tazio Strozti believes_____. A. the sinking will put Venice in danger. B. Venice is sinking at a normal speed. C. Venice is sinking at a surprising speed. D. Venice will stop sinking soon. 65. Which of the following is true according to the passage? A. Bock is a scientist who works with satellites. B. Sea level has stopped rising recently.
C. The sinking speed of Venice has decreased in recent years. D. Venice has become famous for its sinking. 66. In the last paragraph, Bock _____.
A. agrees with Tazio Strozzi about the sinking of Venice B. shows his optimism for the future of Venice C. suggests a creative way to Venetians D. expresses his deep concern about Venice

短文写作
Learning to share is a process to learn how to lead a happy life. I am used to sharing my secrets and favorite things with my friends in order to let my heart free and make me thoroughly forget sadness. When I am happy, I will share my smile with myfriends, which brightens up all the faces around me. When I am sad, I will also share my sorrow with them. There seems to be a stream flowing into my heart, clearing up my pain. I gain happiness which is from not only myself but also others by sharing. As the saying goes,“Sharing is a wonderful thing which can increase the pleasure and reduce sadness.,”I believesharing will be a resource of happiness if I can insist on doingso. Let's share our beloved things with others!

doctor. The children were very sad. Later they had a bright idea, that is, to bake cookies from the old woman's recipe. So the children started a cookie store. Soon they had a very good cookie business, with money to pay the doctor as well as to put in the bank.
After the woman got well, she was asked to become the manager of the store, selling special cookies for all the holidays of the year. After the old woman died, the children, now grown up,kept the cookie business alive in her name.Maybe life is like a Christmas cookie. The more you share it with yourfriends, the more you're likely to enjoy it.
