A murder will occur this weekend in the peaceful seaside town of Langley, Washington. In fact, a murder has occurred there every February for the past 25 years. But don‘t panic! It‘s all part of the town‘s yearly Mystery Weekend.

What began as a local event in 1984 now attracts visitors from over the U.S. and even abroad. Would-be detectives(侦探)arrive and check in at the visitor center on Saturday. There, they receive a packet, including a newspaper with details about the crime and information telling where to find clues(线索). Participants then travel to various shops, restaurants and other downtown locations, picking up clues as they go. Along the way, they encounter and interview suspects played by local townspeople. Most Langley residents participate in some way in the Mystery Weekend, a true community(社区)event.

Amateur sleuths have until Sunday at 4:00 p.m. to solve the crime and turn in their guesses. Then as everyone gathers, the murderer is found and arrested, and prizes are awarded for correct answers. It‘s the perfect ending for a murder mystery and enormous fun for those who get to play detective.

For visitors, Mystery Weekend is not only fun but also a great introduction to the charms of Langley. ―Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain (抱怨) but it takes character and self control to be understanding and forgiving.‖— Dale Carnegie

If we really want to be happy, why do we act like such babies?

We can claim(声称) to be proactive(主动的)in our life by settings goals and going after what we want. But if we‘re always whining and complaining all the time, are we really living effectively?

71 Whether it be being stuck in traffic, being bothered by the weather, not enough mustard on your sandwich, or whatever it is, there are endless instances where you can find a reason to complain.

But it‘s not just outside circumstances that we complain about. 72 We complain about about ourselves too. We complain that we don‘t have enough time, we don‘t have enough money (this one is huge because it‘s often ―true‖), that we‘re not smart enough, cool enough, or just enough.

73 I never really thought about it much until I found this website about ―living in a complain free world.‖ Imagine how much happier you would be if you simply stopped complaining? Much of what you complain about is outside of your control anyway. What‘s the point of brooding about something you have no power to change? 74 Simply becoming conscious of how much you complain is the first step to stopping. When you recognize that you‘re complaining, stop and take notice of it. Ask yourself if you would rather complain, or be happy. 75 A.We complain about ourselves too. B.Not very intelligent, if you ask me. C.Why can‘t we complain about things around us? D.Are you ready to live a complaint – free, happier life? E.What you‘re complaining about may make you quite unhappy. F.If you don‘t believe me, count how many times you complain in one day. G.I‘ve experienced lots of unpleasantness for complaining about things I can‘t control.

Most people who move to a foreign country or culture may go through some form of culture shock, and its degree is determined by the differences between cultures, the anxiety to adapt to a new culture and the familiarity with a new culture, etc. If you go,for example,to a culture that is far different from your own, you‘re likely to experience culture shock more sharply than those who move to a new culture knowing the language and the custom of it.

It is important to understand and learn how to deal with culture shock if you are to adapt successfully to your new home‘s cultures. There are four general stages of cultural adjustment, and being aware of them helps you understand that culture shock won‘t last long. It‘s just a process you are going through rather than a constant situation.

The first stage is usually referred to as ―the honeymoon stage‖.Upon arriving in a new environment, you‘ll be interested in the new culture.Everything will seem thrilling and everyone will seem friendly and helpful.During this stage you are merely taking in these impressions passively.

But it isn‘t long before the honeymoon stage gives way to the second stage—―the withdrawal stage‖.The excitement you felt before is gone and problems arise. The language is hard to learn, people are unusual and unpredictable, friends, are hard to make, and simple things like sh opping and going to the bank are challenges. It is at this stage that you are likely to feel anxious and homesick, and you will probably find yourself complaining about the new cu lture or country. This is the stage called ―culture shock‖. At some point,if you can manage it well, you‘ll begin the transition into the next stage,―the recovery stage‖,in which you‘ll feel more confide nt functioning in the new culture.Customs and traditions are clearer and easier to understand. At this stage, you‘ll deal with new challenge s with humor rather than anxiety.

1.According to the passage, culture shock can be________. A.dealt with more easily for some people B.reduced by learning the language alone

C.avoided by knowing adjustment stages

D.got rid of by learning just the custom

2.―The honeymoon stage‖ here refers to________. A.the first month after the wedding B.the period of excitement C.the stage of adaptation D.the holiday for a newly-married couple

3.Which of the following doesn‘t belong to the second stage? A.Becoming upset. B.Missing family. C.Feeling confident. D.Making complaints.

4.What would be probably discussed in the following paragraph? A.Consequences of culture shock. B.Challenges in a new country. C.Preparations for a new culture.

Although I had left school against the advice of my teacher, I had, without telling anyone, tried to continue my studies in literature at evening classes. It was a tiresome walk from one end of the city to another and to sit among adults was uninteresting. I was the youngest in the class, so the friendship I knew at school was absent, I put up with it for a short period. It was too long a walk on cold winter‘s nights and it was hard to put my heart into Shakespeare with wet shoes and trousers. So I continued reading books and started writing poetry at home.

By chance, I won some prizes and rewards(奖赏)for literature. A young woman from a TV company came to the college one day. She wanted to make a short film about me, to which I said, ―No, I couldn‘t do that.‖ Not that I had any real excuse, I was just frightened. In the end she persuaded me that I should do it the following day.

So I did. They made a short film of me reading one of my poems and I became more interested in literature than ever. I wondered what I should do after this, and decided some weeks later that I could not imagine myself spending the rest of my days dealing with machines. So one evening, I hesitatingly(支吾其词地)told my parents that I wanted to return to school. They wanted to know if I was sure, if I knew what it meant and whether I realized that if I gave up my job training, it would be very difficult to get a good job. In ancient times most examinations were spoken, not written. In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually was made up of saying poetry about or giving speeches.

In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for an advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made a special study of the subject. This custom exists(存在) today as part of examination of testing candidates (考生) for the doctors‘ degree.

Generally, however, modern examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same questions, was probably not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the development of modern industry. A room full of candidates for a state examination, timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by managers, is something like a group of workers at an automobile factory. Certainly, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act like machines.

One type of test is sometimes called an ―objective‖(客观的) test. It aims to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To make up an objective test the teacher writes a number of questions, each of which has only one correct answer. Along with each question the teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look like answers to students who have not learned the material properly. 40. The main idea of paragraph 3 is ________.

A. workers now take examinations B. the population has grown

C. there are only written exams today D. examinations are now written and timed 41. Modern industry must have developed ________.

Dantes climbed through into the cell (牢房) of his dead friend. He stood by the bed and a wave of sadness and loneliness swept over him. There was now no one to talk and nobody to care about him. He hoped that he too would soon die; there was no other hope of escape from the silent hell of life in this prison.

―Yes,‖ he said to himself in this mood of complete despair, ―I expect I shall leave here in the same way as Faria, my good friend Faria. The only way I shall ever leave this place is tied up in a bag as he is now.‖

While these thoughts were passing through his mind, he was suddenly struck by their possible connection with his present situation. Why should he not immediately take Abbe Faria‘s place? To do this might be very dangerous but he had nothing to lose. Whatever happens, the slightest chance of except, was better than waiting for death in this soul-destroying prison. Without wasting a moment‘s thought on the likelihood of failure, he acted directly. There was not a moment to lose. Within the hour, the guards would be back to remove the Abbe‘s dead body. 43. Ⅱ. 阅读理解Recently a research was carried out in London,Birmingham and Leeds among teachers

from different schools about student behavior management.

The majority of teachers said that behavior management is the biggest challenge they face in teaching. They are against the idea of a ―one size fits all‖ approach to behavior management and believe that how they deal with behavior depends on their analysis of what is driving the behavior. Many teachers make the analysis in three steps.First, observe what the student is doing;then look into what drives the behavior and finally identify what is the real problem to deal with,e.g.attention seeking or being unable to follow the lessons etc..However,many teachers felt it sometimes difficult as schools did not always effectively communicate the necessary information about the students for them to do it.

The behaviors are generally divided into low,mid and high level.Teachers felt low and high level behavior was easy to analyze and deal with because low level behavior was seen as the least serious of a problem;and there is clear structure in place for dealing with high level behavior. However, there is no clear structure and effective ways to address mid-level behavior,

which may cause a sense of failure in some teachers.

Teachers also felt that the laws to protect pupils have resulted in a sense of teachers having fewer rights to manage behavior. In case they deal with or be seen to deal with behavior wrongly or improperly, the results could be very serious:damage the child or teacher, especially the ir career. 1.What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.Ways to deal with student behavior problems. B.Importance to manage student behavior.

C.Three levels of student behavior.D.Teachers‘ difficulties in managing student behavior. 2.Why is it sometimes difficult to analyze student behavior? A.Most of the students refuse to talk to teachers about it. B.Some student behaviors are not easy to notice.

C.Teachers do not have enough information about the students. D.Teachers tend to deal with different problems in the same way. 3.Which of the following is NOT true?

A.Most teachers believe behavior management is their biggest challenge. B.Teachers feel high level behavior is the most difficult to deal with. C.There is no clear structure in place to deal with mid-level behavior.

D.Some students behave badly only to attract others‘ attention. 4.What can be inferred from the passage?

A.A teacher risks losing the job if he/she manages student behavior improperly. B.Teachers in England are not willing to manage student behaviors.

C.English laws forbid teachers punishing their students for their behaviors. D.The laws to protect children in England are going to be changed.

A man may usually be known by the books he reads as well as by the company he keeps. One should always live in the best company, whether it is of books or of men.

A good book may be among the best of friends. It is the most patient and cheerful of companions. It always receives us with the same kindness, amusing and instructing us in youth, and comforting us in age.

Men often discover their similarity to each other by the common love they have for a book just as two people sometimes discover a friend by the admiration which both entertain for a third. There is an old proverb,―Love me,love my dog.‖ But there is more wisdom in this:―Love me,love my book.‖ The book is a truer and higher bond (纽带) of union.Men can think, feel, and sympathize with each other through their favorite author.They_live_in_him_together,and_he_in_them. A good book is often the best container of a life preserving the best that life could think out,for the world of a man‘s life is,for the most part, the world of his thoughts. Thus the best books are treasures of good words and the golden thoughts, which become our steady companions and comforters.

Books are by far the most lasting products of human effort.Temples and statues decay (腐朽),but good books survive.Time is of no account with great thoughts, which are as fresh today as when they first passed through their author‘s minds ages ago.

The great and good do not die, even in this world.Preserved in books, their spirits walked abroad. The book is a living voice. It is an intellect (智者) to which one still listens.

1.The writer introduces the topic of the passage by________. A.describing life experience of great writers B.telling his own story of reading good books C.presenting the best thoughts in good books D.comparing good books to good friends in life

2.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 mean?

A.Readers feel sympathy for the author.B.Readers live together with the author. C.Readers and the author share the same feeling.

D.Readers are the author‘s companions and comforters.

3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.We can learn about the great and good through books. B.The most important part of a man‘s life is his treasures. C.Good books help as to know about their authors‘ friends. D.Books are often regarded as best containers in our life. 4.The passage mainly tells us that ________.

Talking plants might sound like characters in a fairy tale. But recent scientific studies have shown that plants communicate with each other and with other living things in a surprising number of ways.To understand them, scientists say,we just have to learn their language.Farmers are es pecially interested in what plants have to say.

“Plants are able to communicate with all sorts of organisms (有机体).They can communicate with giant bacteria, with other plants and with insects. They do this chemically,” said Cahill,an Ecology Professor of the University of Alberta in Canada.

Plant scientists are just beginning to understand this chemical “language”.Cahill says studies have shown, for example, that plants can evaluate conditions in their immediate environment and take appropriate actions.Plants have an ability, for example,to signal pain or discomfort caused by anything from temperature extremes to an insect attack.Jack Schultz,a professor of chemical ecology at the University of Missouri, says when a plant senses that it’s being eaten,it cannot walk away from trouble;on the contrary,it will release a chemical vapor that alerts other plants nearby.

“Their language is a chemical language, and it involves chemicals that move through the air that are easy to be changeable, and most of all are smells that we are familiar with,” Schultz explained. “ All plants responded to the attack by changing their chemistry to defend themselves,” Schultz recalled.“But we were quite surprised to find that nearby plants also changed their chemistry to defend themselves, even though they were not part of the experiment.‖

Studies have also shown that plants under attack release pleasant chemicals. Those chemicals attract friendly insects that attack the pests eating the plant. In the end, plants’ ability to communicate their needs—and our ability to understand them—could help farmers reduce the use of poisonous chemicals, cut operating costs and limit damage to the environment.

5.The recent scientific studies have shown that plants can________. A.communicate with other living things in a chemical way B.hardly react to any sudden change in temperature

C.use a very special chemical language which is familiar to us D.respond to the attack by giving off poisonous chemicals 6.When being eaten by an insect, the plant will________.

D.give off nice chem icals to attract friendly insects killing the pest 7.The underlined word “alert” most probably means “________”. A.warn B.protect C.threaten D.allow 8.Which would be the best title for the passage? A.Communication between Plants

When Taylor Swift first came to the attention of the public, she was a 17-year-old newcomer who

loved singing to her guitar. She seemed far more enthusiastic than skillful. Four years later,Swift became a multi-award winner. This month, she was crowned ―Woman of the Year‖ by Billboard magazine, the youngest singer-song-writer ever to receive the honor.―Aged only 21,Taylor has already made a maior impact on music and has been an un believable role model for hopeful artists and young women everywhere,‖ said Bill Werde,Billboard‘s director.

Werde‘s_words_do_not_come_from_nowhere. Unlike many pop singers, especially those who do not write their own material,Swift has the power of turning her ideas into lyrics that will set people thinking.―Hidden beneath Taylor Swift‘s not-a-girl,not-yet-a-woman sweetness is a very skillful

songwriting technique,‖ wrote Leah Greenblatt in an American magazine.

Songwriting,as Swift explains,is to cope with issues.―I tend to write about things that really impact me most.‖ There certainly seems to be something true and honest running through every one of the 14 songs on her album,Speak Now,about ―the lessons and confusion and heartbreak and all the different things that go along with being 18,19 and 20.‖

―For the audience too young to have experienced real passion or heartbreak,Swift‘s songs are like a potential road map, promising things will work out OK,‖ commented Dorian ynskey in a British newspaper.

Now Swif t is getting ready to go further and has so far written about 10 songs for her 2012 album, which is about feelings of growing up and becoming an adult.―They‘re sad,if I‘m being honest.‖―They‘re about my heartbreaks and my moving on.But more importantly, they are about achieving contentment. You‘re not always going to be perfectly happy as you grow up.‖ 1.What does the writer mean by saying ―Werde‘s words do not come from nowhere‖? Ⅱ 阅读 Not so long ago almost student who successfully completed a university degree could find a good career quite easily. However, those days are gone, even in Hong Kong, and nowadays graduates often face strong competition in the search for jobs.

Job seekers first have to make a careful assessment of their own abilities. One area of assessment should be of their academic qualifications, which would include special skills within their subject area. Graduates should also consider their own personal values and attitudes, or the relative importance to themselves of such matters as money, security, leadership and caring for others.

The second stage is to study the opportunities available for employment.

Job application forms and letters should, of course, be filled in carefully and correctly, without grammar or spelling errors.

When graduates are asked to attend for interview, they should prepare properly by finding out all they can about the prospective employer. Dressing suitably and arriving for the interview on time are also obviously important. Interviewees should try to give positive and helpful answers and should not be afraid to ask questions about anything they are unsure about. This is much better than pretending to understand a question and giving an unsuitable answer.

It is true that it is hard to find a good job. But there will always be good career opportunities for people with ability, skills and determination; the secret to securing good jobs in to be one of them. 1. Which of the following statements is true?

Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there‘s a big difference between ― being a writer‖ and ― writing‖. In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a computer. ―You‘ve got to want to write,‖ I say to them, ― not want to be a writer.‖

The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the US Coast Guard to become a free writer, I had no promise at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn‘t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used computer and felt a real writer.

After a year or so, however, I still hadn‘t gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I know I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn‘t going to be one of those people who die wondering. What if? I would keep putting my dream to the test--- even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the Shadowland of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.

C. He wasn‘t able to have a rest for a whole year.D. He found his dream would never come true. 66. One of the qualities that most people admire in others is the willingness to admit one‘s mistakes. It is extremely hard sometimes to say a simple thing like ?I was wrong about that.‘ and it is even harder to say ―I was wrong, but you were right about that.‖

I had an experience recently with someone admitting to me that he had made a mistake fifteen years ago. He told me he had been the manager of a certain grocery store in the neighborhood where I grew up and he asked me if I remembered the egg cartons(纸板盒). Then he related an incident and I began to remember vaguely(模糊地)the incident he was describing.

I was about eight years old at the time, and I had gone into the store with mother to do the weekly grocery shopping. On that particular day, I must have found my way to the dairy food department where the incident took place.

There must have been a special sale on eggs that day because there was an impressive display of eggs in dozen and half dozen cartons. The cartons were stacked(堆放)three or four feet high. I must have stopped in front of a display to admire the stacks. Just then a woman came by pushing her grocery cart and knocked off the stacks of cartons. For some reason, I decided it was up to me to put the display back together, so I went to work.

The manager heard the noise and came rushing over to see what had happened. When he appeared, I was on my knees inspecting some of the cartons to see if any of the eggs were broken. But to him it looked as though I had done it. He severely criticized me and wanted me to pay any broken eggs. I protested my innocence and tried to explain, but it did no good. Even though I quickly forgot all about the incident, apparently the manager did not. 56. How old was the author when he wrote this article?

A. About 8 B. About 18. C. About 23. D. About 15 57. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. The woman who knocked off the stacks of cartons was seriously criticized by the manager. B. The author was severely criticized by the manager. C. A woman carelessly knocked off the stacks of cartons. D. It was the author who put the display back together.

58. The tone of the article expressed the author‘s _________. A. admiration for the manager‘s willingness to admit mistakes B. anger to the manager for his wrong accusation.(指责,谴责) C. indignation against the woman who knocked off the stacks of cartons D. regret for the mistake he made in the store.

As students enter the school building, they are easy targets of peer pressure. Students may become involved in activities that are dangerous to themselves,or others, due to peer pressure.

Drugs, including alcohol, are a major part of peer pressure. A research institute reports that about 30 percent of the teenagers are offered drugs in middle and high schools. The majority of teens consume their first drink of alcohol at the age of 13.The National Household Survey on drug use and health from the Department of Health and Human Services informs the public that 74.3 percent of the high school students have tried alcohol. About 1 500 years ago the Japanese imported many aspects of Chinese culture:the writing system, political institutions, and perhaps the most important,Buddhism. Buddhist priests were expected to eat only vegetables, and tofu (豆腐),made from the soybean, was a very important food in their diet. When Buddhism was introduced from China, tofu was also brought to Japan.

Tofu developed in different ways in China and Japan. While the Chinese often changed the taste of tofu by mixing it with strongly-flavored vegetables or meat, the Japanese preferred to eat it using only a simple sauce. Even now,

traditional Japanese cooking preserves the original delicacy of tofu, though the way it is served may change from season to season. In summer, for example,it is simply served cold, while in winter it is often eaten as part of a hot dish.

The soybean was introduced to the West in the 18th century, but little interest was taken in it. Only scientists recognized its high food value. During the Second World War,when meat was in short supply, the US government encouraged the American people to eat soybean products. However, they never became very popular and, after the war, interest in them dropped off as the supply of meat became plentiful again.

In recent years, people in the west have become increasingly aware of the dangers of eating too much animal fat,and as a result, they have turned more and more to soybean products. This is mainly because the soybean provides almost the same food value as meat, and in addition it is a lot more healthful. Much of the margarine (人造黄油),salad oil and cooking oil in daily use is now produced from soybean oil. Tofu,a representative soybean product and originally one of the main foods in the diet of Chinese priests,is considered to be one of the healthiest foods available to man.

5.Tofu came to Japan together with Buddhism because________. A.Buddhist priests ate tofu rather than vegetables

B.it was a very important food in the diet of Buddhist priests C.the religion came to Japan together with political institutions D.the religion was the most important aspect of Chinese culture 6.How are Japanese tofu dishes different from Chinese tofu dishes? A.They are preserved in the original taste.

B.They are served the same way throughout the year. C.They have a better taste than Chinese tofu dishes. D.They have a greater variety than Chinese tofu dishes.

7.Why did the US government encourage its people to eat soybean products in wartime? A.Americans recognized their high food value. B.Little interest was taken in the soybean products. C.Meat was less available than before. D.They were found to taste very good.

8.The western people become interested in tofu and other soybean products because________. A.they have become tired of eating meat B.meat has become too expensive to buy C.these products are more readily available

D.eating too much animal fat is considered unhealthy 第二部分:短文改错

Ecotourism:A Different Way to Travel

Are you attracted to obscure places?Do you prefer to vacation away from other tourists? Are you careful to take only memories and to leave only footprints? If you answered yes to more than one of these questions, you just might be an ecotourist.

Ecotourists are people who want to experience the unspoiled natural world—and leave it that way when they return home. This trend started in the 1990s,and ecotourism is now growing three times faster than the tourism industry at large. The Kapawi Ecolodge in Ecuador‘s remote Amazon Basin is contributing to that expansion, and it gives a snapshot of what ecotourism looks like. At the Ecolodge,a small group of cabins sits in the middle of the Achuar people‘s reserve and is only accessible by air. From here, visitors can explore parts of the Amazon rainforest seen by few outsiders. As they do,local Achuar guides explain how the forest is like their supermarket, where they find food, clothing, medicine and tools. As a result, tourists learn to appreciate the local culture as well as the natural environment.

The owners of Kapawi pay monthly rent to the Achuar people, but they also train the community to run and manage the lodge. They have agreed on a plan to turn the operation over to the Achuar completely by 2011.The owners are working to make ecotourism benefit and empower the local people.

You probably won‘t start your own ecolodge, but you can be an ecotourist if you follow these guidelines:Protect the environment;Support local businesses;Respect the local customs and traditions. The world is full of fascinating places to visit. As an ecotourist, you can enjoy them yourself and make sure that they remain beautiful for future generations as well.

Nearly two million drivers in the UK have had accidents due to ―Baby on Board‖ signs and children‘s toys that affect their view, according to alarming new research. One in 20 motorists says stickers and playtime paraphernalia (装备) are to blame for a collision—equivalent to 1.85 million of Britain‘s 37 million drivers. The discovery triggered a warning by a road safety charity—Brake to cut down on clutter (杂乱的东西) in the car.

Deputy chief executive Julie Townsend said ―Baby on Board‖ signs are very useful in alerting the emergency services that a child may be involved in case of a crash.―This help can become negative if drivers display signs when their child isn‘t in the car,‖ she said.―Worse still is the danger that can be caused by drivers influencing their view by cluttering up (塞满) windows with lots of signs. Drivers‘ priority should always be getting there safely without putting themselves, young passengers or other road users at risk.‖

A survey arranged by price comparison website Confused.com found that 37 percent of parents have displayed signs and four out of five of them believe they improve safety. But 46 percent admit doing so at all times—regardless of whether or not their child is in the car—and 15 percent admit they only have them for their novelty (新奇) value. The poll of 2,000 drivers also found that 46 percent of drivers regard them as a risk and 33 percent say they are lacking in taste.

―There are benefits and dangers to ?Baby on Board‘ signs. They can offer useful information for medical aid in case of a crash but having too many novelty items displayed could be a safety issue,‖ said a Confused.com spokesman.

13.What do we learn about the signs on the car from Paragraph 1? A.They can be dangerous.

B.They are useful to avoid accidents. C.They are welcomed by passengers. D.They are forbidden to be used.

14.What is Julie Townsend‘s attitude towards the signs? A.Positive. B.Negative. C.Uninteresting. D.Objective.

15.According to the survey, most of the drivers who use the signs think that the signs________. A.can improve safety B.are unnecessary C.can make drivers clear D.can kill time 16.What is the purpose of this text? A.To solve a problem.

B.To describe a threat to traffic safety. C.To tell an interesting story.

D.To persuade drivers to drive safely.

Where does happiness lie?

As a student of Senior Three,I can‘t easily find time to relax myself because of so much homework and endless tests. It seems we led a life in the darkness. During May Day holiday,I made an arrangement with a good friend to go outing in the countryside. You can imagine this picture with a blue sky, white clouds and green grassland. When we stayed in such an environment, fresh air washed minds, warm sunshine touched skins and beautiful scenery filled eyes. How happy it is of us,close to nature,to experience the great joy. Now,I feel more energetic when I open books. It is just so easy to enjoy happiness if we go outside in the hug of nature. Happiness is under our feet. It exists in the great joy from the beautiful scenery.

How to Sleep Better

If you‘re having trouble getting good sleep through the night (turning, waking up more than once, for example),this text will tell you what you can do to ensure a peaceful night‘s sleep.

1.Get on schedule. Changing your sleeping time by more than an hour can severely disturb your sleep quality.__1__For example,if you normally wake up at 6 am on weekdays to get to work, you might go to bed around 10 pm,because that‘s when you start to feel sleepy, and it‘s also a good time to ensure 8 hours of sleep. If,on the weekend, you sleep until 9 am,you probably won‘t be able to fall asleep that night until 1 am.

2.__2__Wait at least three hours after dinner before going to sleep. Digestion slows down while asleep, and a full stomach may interrupt sleep. Similarly, you should avoid going to bed on an empty stomach,as a completely empty stomach may equally disturb your sleeping patterns.

3.__3__Exposure to light during the time when you‘re supposed to be sleeping can disrupt your body‘s internal clock. Turn your light off,or use a very dim night light.__4__They include windows,LED clocks, computer lights and cable boxes.

4.Change your sleeping position. You may think that it‘s impossible to control what position you sleep in since you aren‘t fully aware of what you are doing, but it is possible and it can make a considerable difference.__5__ A.Try to avoid all sources of light. B.Keep the room as dark as possible. C.Make note of unusual circumstances.

D.Be mindful of what you eat or drink before bed.

E.Sleep is considered to be adequate only when there is no daytime sleepiness.

F.In other words, sudden change of sleeping time will affect your ―biological clock‖. G.If you wake up in the middle of the night, make an effort to have a comfortable position. 第二部分:完形填空

There are many ways of defining success. It is accurate to say that each of us has our own ideas of success to the extent that each of us is responsible for setting our own goals and determining whether we have met these goals satisfactorily.Because each of us possesses unique differences in genetic ability and favorable environments in which to express these abilities,it is necessarily true that we must define success broadly.

For some people, simply being able to live their life with the least misery and suffering is considered a success.Think of the peace of mind of the poor shepherd who tends his sheep, enjoys his simple life with his family in the beauty of nature, and who is respected because he does a good job of achieving the goals expected of him and accepted by his family and his society. On the other hand,it seems that even though some people appear to be rich in material possessions, many of them seem to be miserable and consider themselves unsuccessful when judged by their own standards of success.Because not all ventures can be successful, one should not set unrealistic goals for achieving success, but if one has self-cconfidence it would be unfortunate to set one‘s goals at a too low level of achievement.

A wise man once said to a young man who was experiencing frustration (挫败) with his own professional success,―You do not have to set your goal to reach the moon in order to have success in traveling.Sometimes one can be very successful merely by taking a walk in the park or riding the subway downtown.‖ The man added,―You have not really failed and spoiled your chances for success until you have been unsuccessful at something you really like, and to which you have given your best effort.‖

1.According to the first paragraph, what is implied as basics in achieving success? A.Ability and goals.

B.Goals and determination. C.Ability and environments. D.Goals and environments.

2.Some rich people consider themselves unsuccessful because________. A.their life is busy and miserable

B.they haven‘t reached their own standards C.they set their goals at a too low level D.they are not rich in material possessions 3.From the last paragraph we can tell that________. A.success means achieving great goals B.success comes from setting great goals C.success means efforts and favorites pay off

D.success has nothing to do with the distance of your travel

Handling a wad of cash may be as good at killing pain than ibuprofen (布洛芬) or aspirin,a new study suggests.

Researchers at the University of Minnesota carried out a series of studies which showed those who counted money before taking part in an experiment where they were subjected to low levels of pain felt less discomfort than those who did not.

It‘s thought that fondling notes and coins helps ward off pain by boosting feelings ofself-worth and self-sufficiency.

Previous studies have shown those with a greater sense of self-worth may be more likely to bear pain.Britain

spends at least £500 million a year on over-the-counter painkilling pills and the figure is increasing every year. But

scientists remain puzzled by why some people appear to feel pain more easily than others. In the latest study,a group of students were asked to count out a wad of cash consisting of 80 one-hundred dollar bills,or just 80 slips of

blank paper. They had been told researchers were simply testing their dexterity (熟练) in handling the notes.

Each volunteer was then asked to dip their hands into a bowl of very hot water,to see how painful they found it and how long they could last. The results, published in a recent edition of the journal Psychological Science, showed those who had handled money reported less pain and lasted longer. The results support other studies highlighting how the brain can be tuned to fight off pain without the use of pills.

A University of Los Angeles team of scientists found just looking at a photograph of a loved one can also be a powerful form of pain relief. They recommended anyone visiting hospital for painful tests or examinations should bring a picture to help them cope.

And patients who have had major surgery, such as a knee or hip replacement, can halve the amount of painkilling medicine they need simply by stroking a pet, according to tests at Loyola University in Chicago.

4.Handling money can prevent pain because ________. A.we are confident in our usefulness

B.we can afford the expenses of the treatment C.we can do everything with the money D.we can‘t live without money

5.The phrase ―over-the-counter painkilling pills‖ refer to pills________. A.that can be obtained outside the drug store B.that can be bought without a prescription C.that are placed on the counter of the store

D.that are purchased with a written order from a doctor 6.Which of the following may least kill pain? ACounting out a wad of cashes.

BLooking at the picture of a loved one. C.Handling a group of blank paper. D.Walking a pet.

7.What might be the most suitable title for the passage? A.Money Makes Something Impossible Possible B.Money Has a Magic Power in Treating Patients C.Money Brings Comfort to Pain Suffers D.Money Kills Pains Better than Aspirin 8.We can infer that the passage is________. A.a research report on the role of money B.a kind of medicine instructions

C.an introduction to a new medicineD.a description of natural reaction to a medicine

第二部分.阅读理解A

It is reported that one in three of us eats more meals by ourselves than we do with other people. But before you accept that somewhat depressing statistic, there is some good news—a lot of us are perfectly happy to eat alone because the computer and TV provide us with solitary entertainment.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, half of the UK’s singles eat a meal alone at least once a day.And even one in four mothers with families has dinner mostly by themselves according to a major report on eating trends and social change by the Future Foundation. However, eating alone doesn’t seem to matter anymore if you can chat away on social networks—in fact it’s now a both quick and entertaining affair.

“Suppertainment” is the phrase created for the current major trend that reflects the number of people who eat in front of the computer,TV or game controller.Single men are the majority leading this trend, with 60 percent of them spending mealtimes entertaining themselves with something.However,40 percent of mothers and 30 percent of students also eat meals while being on the PC or laptop several times a week.

Boyd Hilton,TV and reviews editor of Heat magazine says,“Setting yourself up in front of the TV to ‘suppertain’ comes naturally, especially when you’ve been busy all day.If I’m on my own I always tend to make a quick and easy meal and settle down to watch something entertaining or I’ll get on the laptop and catch up with comedies like the new season of Curb Your Enthusiasm on More 4 or Outnumbered on BBC 1.”

“I think it’s such a bonus that healthy and tasty convenience meals now mean you can relax about eating good food without having to worry about preparation time.”

1.Why don’t many people eating alone feel lonely?

A.They are too busy to feel lonely.B.People are happy to eat alone. C.They eat with solitary entertainment.D.They have good news at mealtimes. 2.Which of the following best defines the term “suppertainment”? A.The trend of eating alone among single people.

B.Eating alone accompanied by the computer,TV or game controller. C.Entertaining oneself with advanced technology.

D.Get relaxed by watching comedies on TV or playing games on the computer.

3.What is the purpose of the author by quoting what Boyd Hilton said in the last paragraph? A.To emphasize the importance of healthy and tasty meals. B.To tell people to have good meals without doing preparing work. C.To prove that “suppertainment” is a good idea.

D.To call people’s attention to eating meals in relaxing manners.

B Have you noticed how many nouns are being used as verbs? We all use them, often without

noticing what we’re doing.

I was arranging to meet someone for dinner last week, and I said “I’ll_pencil_it_in_my_diary”,and my friend said “You must ink it in”,meaning that it was a firm arrangement!

Many of these new verbs are linked to new technology. An obvious example is the word “fax”.We all got used to sending and receiving faxes, and then soon started talking about faxing something and promising we’d fax it immediately. Then along came emails, and we were soon all emailing each other madly. How did we do without it?I can hardly imagine life without my daily emails.

Also,my computer and its software have produced another couple of new verbs. On my computer I can bookmark those pages from the World Wide Web that I think I’ll want to look at again. And I can do the same thing on my PC,but there I don’t bookmark;I favorite—coming from “favorite pages”,so the verb is derived from an adjective not a noun this time.

Now my children bought me a mobile phone, known simply as a mobile and I have to learn yet more new verbs.I can message someone, that is,I can leave a message for them on their phone.Or I can text them, write a few words suggesting, when and where to meet, for example. How long will it be before I can mobile them, that is,phone them using my mobile?I haven’t heard that verb yet,but I’m sure I will soon.Perhaps I’ll start using it myself

4.“I’ll pencil it in my diary” in the second paragraph probably means________. A.it was a firm arrangementB.it was an uncertain arrangement

C.the arrangement is written as a diaryD.he prefers a pencil to a pen 5.A website address can be easily found if it has been________for the author. A.emaileB.messaged C.favorited D.Texted

It's tempting(诱惑人的) to cheat because it makes difficult things seem easy, like getting all the right answer on the rest. 74 And it won't help on the next test-unless the person cheats again.

You know, he's fatter now -- I'm thinner.\thrilled at the 3-D re-release of Titanic to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the ship's demise. “ It happens every time I get on any boat of any kind.\people who want her to walk to the front of the ship and re-create her famous pose, arms flung wide. Most people remember the tragedy: The British passenger ship -- said to be unsinkable -- hit an iceberg and sank on April 15, 1912, during its maiden voyage from England to New York City. More than 1,500 people died. But little known is what the world learned from the sinking to prevent future incidents.

Probably the greatest deficiency (不足)of the Titanic was that she was built 40 years before

the widespread use of the wonderful invention radar(雷达). Her only defense against icebergs and

hidden obstacles was to rely on manned lookouts. On that fateful night the eyesight of trained lookouts only provided 37 seconds of warning before the collision.

Traveling at nearly 30 miles an hour the Titanic was moving far too fast to avoid the huge iceberg. The warning did prevent a head-on collision as the officer on the bridge managed to turn the ship slightly.

The last ship to send a warning was the California. She was within ten miles of the Titanic during the disaster, but her radio operator went to bed at midnight and never received any of the SOS messages from the Titanic. That was one of the important lessons learned from the catastrophe, the need for 24-hour radio operators on all passenger liners.

Another lesson learned was the need for more lifeboats. The Titanic remained afloat(漂浮) for almost three hours and most of the passengers could have been saved with enough lifeboats. 1,500 passengers and workers died in the 28 degree waters of the Atlantic. Out of the tragedy, the sinking did produce some important maritime reforms. The winter travel routes were changed to the south and the Coast Guard began to keep an eye on the location of all icebergs. The new rules for lifeboats were obvious to all. There must be enough lifeboats for everybody on board. The most important lesson learned was that no one would ever again consider a ship unsinkable- no matter how large or how well constructed. Never again would sailors place their faith in a ship above the power of the sea.

56. The text mainly tells us ______.

57. A. the reason why the Titanic sank in the Atlantic Ocean

B. how the unsinkable ship of Titanic sank in the Atlantic OceanC. the lessons that we could learn from the accident of theTitanicD. the things we should do to protect the lives on the ship 57. According to the passage, which of the following could we infer?

A.If the captain had been more careful, he could have had the chance to save the Titanic. B.If radar had existed 40 years ago, the Titanic would have never disappeared from the world. C.If the lookout had had much more experience, he could have had the time to save the Titanic. D.If there had been enough lifeboats on the Titanic, the Titanic would not have sunk in the Atlantic.

58. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Lessons from the Titanic B. Technology is Important C. Demands of Passengers D. Power of Sea

59. What’s the sailors’ attitude towards the ships after the tragedy? A. They think there really exists the unsinkable ship. B. They think ships could eventually defeat the sea.

C. They think there is no power that could control the sea. D. They think the bigger the ship is, the safer it is.

If you want to teach your children how to say sorry, you must be good at saying it yourself, especially to your own children. But how you say it can be quite tricky. If you say to your children “I’m sorry I got angry with you, but ?” what follows that “but” can render the apology ineffective: “I had a bad day” or “your noise was giving me a headache ” leaves the person who has been injured feeling that he should be apologizing for his bad behavior in expecting an apology.

Another method by which people appear to apologize without actually doing so is to say “I’m sorry you’re upset”; this suggests that you are somehow at fault for allowing yourself to get upset by what the other person has done.

Then there is the general, all covering apology, which avoids the necessity of identifying a specific act that was particularly hurtful or insulting, and which the person who is apologizing should promise never to do again. Saying “I’m useless as a parent” does not commit a person to any specific improvement.

These pseudo-apologies are used by people who believe saying sorry shows weakness. Parents who wish to teach their children to apologize should see it as a sign of strength, and therefore not resort to these pseudo-apologies. But even when presented with examples of genuine contrition, children still need help to become aware of the complexities of saying sorry. A three-year-old might need help in understanding that other children feel pain just as he does, and that hitting a playmate over the head with a heavy toy requires an apology. A six-year-old might need reminding that spoiling other children’s expectations can require an apology. A 12-year-old might need to be shown that raiding the biscuit tin without asking permission is acceptable, but that borrowing a parent’s clothes without permission is not.

60. According to the author, saying “I’m sorry you’re upset” most probably means “_______”. A. You have good reason to get upset B. I’m aware you’re upset, but I’m not to blame C. I apologize for hurting your feelingsD. I’m at fault for making you upset

61. We learn from the last paragraph that in teaching children to say sorry _______. A. the complexities involved should be ignored B. their ages should be taken into account C. parents need to set them a good example D. parents should be patient and tolerant

62. It can be inferred from the passage that apologizing properly is _______.

A. a social issue calling for immediate attention B. not necessary among family members C. a sign of social progress D. not as simple as it seems

Have you ever intended to be fully absorbed in your work but found yourself distracted by e-mail, the Internet and other things throughout the day? According to the survey made by a famous university in the USA, most people have the experience.

\often lose their concentration when they are bored, of course, but also when they are engaged in challenging tasks,\a feeling to escape from what's difficult or boring, so they jump out,\brain devoted to attention is connected to the brain's emotional center. Any strong emotion —quarrels with colleagues, problems at home —can interrupt our attention. Studies over the last decade have shown that too much work to do at a time can easily lead to distraction.

Refocusing is hard for many people. Robert Epstein suggests the following, \to some soft music for a few minutes. Find a good friend or a teacher and say out your matter on your mind.
