Complete the following passage with words chosen from the Words and Phrases to Drill box. Change the form where necessary.
Is there a contrast (1) between learning styles in China and the West? While we should be careful to avoid exaggerating (2) the differences, they do appear to exist. In China, for example, greater priority (3) is given to developing skills at an early age. The Americans, on the other hand (4) , place more emphasis on promoting (5) creativity in young children, leaving them to pick up (6) skills later. American parents tend to avoid rushing in to assist (7) their children as they try to accomplish (8) a task, thinking it better that children should learn to solve problems by themselves. Such an approach can, on occasion (9), be mistaken for neglecting (10) one’s parental duties by those more used to “teaching by holding the hand.” Both approaches have their disadvantages as well as advantages, and it may well be worthwhile (11) to search for a superior (12) method that would combine the best of both worlds.
(B)
Fill in the gaps with any words you think fit:
Why are children so different in their responses to (1) the same situation? Some research suggests that styles of parenting may affect/influence (2) children’s competence in dealing with their world. According to some researchers, there are three parenting styles and one style of parenting enhances children’s competence more than the others (3). Typical behavior patterns of children raised according to each/them (4) are as follows. Authoritarian parents value control and expect their children to obey without (5) questioning. In authoritarian homes, children are so strictly controlled (6) that often they cannot make independent choices about (7) their own behavior. Permissive parents value (8) self-expression and self-regulation. They (9) are warm, noncontrolling, and undemanding. In permissive homes, children receive so little (10) guidance that they may become uncertain and anxious about whether they are doing the right (11) thing. Authoritative parents respect children’s independent decisions, interests, and opinions, but (12) also stress social values. They are loving, demanding, firm in (13) maintaining standards and willing to impose mild punishment. In authoritative homes, children know what (14) is expected of them and can decide whether it is worth (15) risking parental displeasure to pursue a goal. These children know the satisfaction of meeting responsibilities and (16) achieving success.
II. Translation
Translate the following passage into English, using the words and phrases given below:
I consider it worthwhile trying to summarize our experience in learning English. Here I would like to make three relevant points. First, wide reading should be taken as a priority in the learning process, because it is through reading that we get the most language input. Next, learning by heart as many well-written essays as possible is also very important. On the one hand, rote learning/learning by rote is indeed of little help, but on the other hand, memorization/learning by heart with a good understanding will certainly be of benefit/do good to us. With an enormous store of excellent essays in our heads, we will find it much easier to express ourselves in English. Finally, it is critical that we should put what we have learned into practice. By doing more reading, writing, listening and speaking, we will be able to accomplish the task of perfecting our English.

II. Translation

George, the son of Mr. Johnson, liked listening to heavy metal music in the evenings, and the noise interrupted the sleep of other residents in the community. Eventually the exhausted neighbors lost their patience and decided on direct interference. They called Mr. Johnson to tell him in a frank manner what they were thinking. Embarrassed, Mr. Johnson scolded his son, “What has come over you? You should know better than to disturb others for the sake of your own interest.” As a result George traded his records for computer games software from his classmates. Overall, the whole thing has worked out quite satisfactorily.
