When Christopher Columbus landed on the then unnamed Costa Rica in 1502, he saw many Indians wearing gold earrings. So he thought the land must be rich in gold. He named the place Costa Rica, which means “rich coast” in Spanish.

Though little gold was found, Costa Rica today is indeed rich with coffee and bananas. Coffee is the most important product in Costa Rica and most of it is exported (出口) to other countries like America and Germany. Bananas are the country’s second most important export.

Costa Ricans also grow many other crops such as fruits, corn and beans for their own use. Costa Ricans love colors and their houses are painted in bright colors.

Education is very important to the Costa Ricans. Almost every village has a school and education is a must for children between seven and fourteen years of age. Boys and girls go to separate (单独的) schools. Classes begin in March and end in November. Every day we go to school and listen to the teacher, and the teacher will ask us some questions. Sometimes, the classmates will ask your opinions of the work of the class. When you are telling others in the class what you have found out about these topics, remember that they must be able to hear what you are saying. You are not taking part in a family conversation or having a chat with friends---you are in a slightly unnatural situation where a large group of people will remain silent, waiting to hear what you have to say. You must speak so that they can hear you---loudly enough and clearly enough but without trying to shout or appearing to force yourself.

Remember, too, that it is the same if you are called to an interview whether it is with a professor of your school or a government official who might meet you. The person you are seeing will try to put you at your ease but the situation is somewhat different from that of an ordinary conversation. You must take special care that you can be heard. 56. When you speak to the class, you should speak ________.

A. as slowly as possible B. in a low voice C. loudly D. forcefully

57. Usually, when you speak to the class, the class is ________.

A. noisy B. quiet C. having a rest D. serious

58. The situation in the class is _________that in your house.

59. If you are having a conversation with an official, the most important thing for you is____.

A. to show your ability B. to be very gentle C. to make sure that you can be heard D. to put the official at ease

60. The main idea of this passage is _______.

A. that we should talk in different ways in different situations B. that we must speak loudly C. that we must keep silent at any time D. that we must talk with the class

C

English is the most widely used language in the history of our planet. One in every seven human beings can speak it. More than half of the world’s books and three quarters of international mail are in English. Of all languages, English has the largest vocabulary — perhaps as many as two million words.

However, let’s face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweet-meats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat.

We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoxes (探讨它的矛盾), we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, public bathrooms have no baths in them.

And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth? One goose, two geese — so one moose, two meese?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next?

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects (反映) the creativity of human beings. That’s why, when stars are out, they are visible (能看见的); but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I wind up this essay, I

end it.

61. According to the passage ______.

A. sweet-meats and sweetbreads are different things B. there should be egg in an eggplant C. pineapples are the apples on the pine tree D. boxing rings should be round

62. Which of the following is the correct plural? A. Beeth. B. Geese. C. Meese. D. Tooth.

63. Which of the following includes two items which have the similar meaning? A. A wise man and a wise guy. B. Overlook and oversee. C. Quite a lot and quite a few. D. Hot as hell and cold as hell.

64. The underlined words “wind up” in the last paragraph probably mean “____”. A. blow

B. roll up

C. get hurt

D. finish

65. Through the many paradoxes in the English language, the writer wants to show that human beings are ______. A. clever

B. crazy

C. lazy D

A person’s ability to quickly react to different circumstances might better indicate his or her chances for a longer and healthier life, than their blood pressure, weight or exercise levels, reports a new study by British researchers.

While this can be attributed, in part, to differences in lifestyles because commonly, the more intelligent people are, the less likely they tend to smoke and suffer from extreme weight, there was still much of the gap that could not be previously explained. In fact, according to the authors, people’s reaction times are a measure of their intelligence (IQ), which, in its turn is an indicator of “system integrity” (系统完整性) of their bodies, in other words, how well the rest of the body is wired together.

The Scottish research appears to be the first to focus on a comparison between people’s

D. dull

intelligence and their death. The findings were based on the study of 7,414 people nationwide for more than a twenty-year period of time.

In the experiment, the reaction times of all the study participants were measured by the means of an electrical device that was fitted with a small screen and 5 numbered buttons. The participants then were asked to press the matching buttons when they saw some number appearing on screen. The time that every volunteer had taken to react was meanwhile recorded and averages worked out.

It was found later that since the mid-80s, more than 1,200 people have died, and 568 of them from heart related conditions. The experts then compared the reaction times, smoking and drinking habits, weight and other factors of those people who had passed away with those who had survived. The results revealed that people with slow reactions were 2.6 times more likely to die prematurely (提前) from any cause. The only factor that was somehow connected with an increased risk of death was smoking—making it over 3 times more likely.

Traditional indicators such as heart rate, waist circumference, physical activity, drinking habits, body max index (BMI) and blood pressure were found to be less accurate. There had been assumptions that reaction time, as a measure of speed of the information-processing capacity, may be a marker for the integrity of the human body, the researchers wrote. But the current study shows that slower are the reaction times, and therefore worse capability to process information—better are the chances of physiological malfunctioning (技能丧失), which may in turn be linked to a premature death.

66 What would be the best title for the passage? A. Want to Live a Longer Life?—Watch Your Reaction B. A Better Way to Measure One’s Intelligence C. The Relation Between Intelligence and Lifestyle D. Good Habits Lead to a Longer Life

67. People’s reaction times can tell us about _______. A. their life styles

B. their intelligence D. their way of thinking

C. their body max index

68. According to the passage, if a person has slower reaction, he _______. A. is more likely to die prematurely from any cause

B. is more likely to die from heart related conditions C. must have high body max index D. is sure to have many bad habits

69. The researchers believe traditional indicators ________. A. can only be used to tell a person’s lifespan

B. can be used to measure one’s information-processing capacity C. are not so accurate in telling a person’s lifespan as expected D. can only be used to tell a person’s lifestyle 70. We can infer from the passage that _________. A. it’s hard to tell whether one can live a longer life B. none of the traditional indicators are reliable

C. the Scottish researchers are still not sure what leads to a longer life D. smoking is an important cause of a premature death

第三部分:写作

第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

Speaking comes to most people as naturally as breathing. On many occasions our words are expressed without conscious thought; in fact we rarely stop and think about what we are saying. Thousands of words pour out of our mouths each day as our thoughts, opinions, judgments and beliefs are freely conveyed. Often, however, we are unconscious of the positive or negative effect which these words have on ourselves and the people around us.

Words have tremendous power. Words give out energy and a message which creates a reaction in others. Everything you say produces an effect in the world. Whatever you say to someone else will produce some kind of an effect in that person. We are constantly creating something, either positive or negative with our words.

An important key to success in life is to understand the power of words. A word is a

permanent thought. Our thoughts do have a great effect on us even though they are internal. What we think affects the way we live our life, and affects our emotions, our attitudes and our behaviour. A thought spoken, however, has even more power. It can never be taken back ; it is out of our mouth and will have an effect. Our words have even more power than our thoughts because they not only affect ourselves, but the people and the world around us.

Successful people take control of their words, rather than letting their words control them.

They are more conscious of their thoughts and words and the power they produce. Successful people understand that they need to speak positively rather than negatively in order to see success. Successful people are characterized by the words that they speak. They know the importance of speaking words that will build self-esteem and confidence, build relationships and build possibilities. They speak words of affirmation, encouragement, love, acceptance and appreciation. 71.Why does speaking come to most people as naturally as breathing ?(No more than 15 words) __________________________________________________________________________ 72. Dear fellow students,

Our school advocates that we should build a low-carbon campus in order to protect the earth. I think it is everyone’s duty to work hard to achieve this goal. Here is what I think we should do: First of all, we should walk or ride bikes instead of riding in cars or school buses to reduce the amount of pollution. Secondly, when we eat the food in the school cafeteria, we should eat up what we buy and not waste the food. Thirdly, it is important for us to save electricity and water. We should not leave the lights on in the daytime or leave water running after washing. Instead, we should turn off lights as soon as we leave the classroom and dormitories.

In a word, if we can make small changes in our way of life, we can make a big difference to the earth!

Dear fellow students, let’s start right now and spare no effort to do every little thing we can from now on!
