Process Specification No. 4001 (ES-PS-4001)

Zinc Plating Sheet 1 of 2

1.

This specification covers the electrolytic plating of zinc for the purpose of corrosion

protection of iron or steel surfaces. If required, supplementary chromate finishes will be specified.

Note: Clear or colored chromate and dichromate based conversions coatings may contain hexavalent chromium above the thresholds specified in the TTTG ELV Standard ES00010402. Any coatings that contain hexavalent chromium above the specified thresholds shall no longer be used. Clear, trivalent chromate coatings that are free of hexavalent chromium as certified in the suppliers IMDS materials

disclosure may be used.

A.

4001A 0.0002" 32 hrs. 48 hrs.

4001B 0.0003" 48 hrs. 72 hrs.

4001C 0.0005" 72 hrs. 96 hrs.

The above minimum thicknesses are to be measured on flat surfaces. Salt spray testing is to be done per ASTM B117. For fasteners, a minimum of five pieces must be run per test. The entire part, including threaded surfaces, is to be rated. 10% overall red rust on any given part is considered a failure. Only one re-test is permitted, and the number of samples must be doubled (i.e., ten fasteners per test) on the re-test.

Parts that have a hardness of 30 Rc or greater are to be baked at 375° for a minimum of four hours at temperature. Baking must be done within 40 minutes after plating.

Any part must be able to withstand a static load of 85% of its yield strength for 336 hours without cracking or failure.

Plating and any supplementary finish shall be uniform and free from surface

imperfections. All parts shall meet dimensional requirements after plating and finishing. Plating and finish must adhere tightly to substrate with no evidence of flaking before or after part is assembled.
