What makes you happy? Music? Money? Spending time with friends?

For American young people, family time is the main source (来源) of happiness, according to a recent survey of 1,280 American young people. Most of them say it is a good relationship with their parents that makes them happy.

“My mum tells me that, even if I do something silly, she?s still going to love me no matter what happens. Just knowing that makes me feel very happy,” says Kristiana St. John, 17, a high school student in New York.

After family, it is relationships with friends that seem to matter most.

There were also many other kinds of answers given to the “What makes you happy?” question. For Chad Fiedler, 17, happiness is “just waking up in the morning and looking forward to what he?s going to do that day”. And for Esohe Roland, 14, it?s “playing trumpet (小号) in his school band”. So, what is happiness? Let?s hear what Chinese teenagers want to say.

For Bao Yiqiao, 15, Beijing, happiness comes from success brought by hard work. She felt happy when she was admitted to a top high school. She was happy when she came fifth in a recent swimming competition.

For Jiang Wenyu, 17, Dalian, spending time with his family makes him happy. Whenever he feels down at school, his parents encourage him to go on. They always help him to find a way out. 51. ________ matters most for American young people. A. A good relationship with their parents B. Enjoying music C. Good relationships with their friends D. Having a lot of money 52. Which of the following might make Bao Yiqiao happy? A. Getting on well with her family.

B. Taking the 2nd place in the table tennis competition. C. Playing computer games all day. D. offering others timely help.

53. It can be inferred from the passage that_______.

A. the Americans don?t believe hard work can lead to success. B. different people have different ideas of happiness.

C. the Chinese and the Americans share the same ideas of happiness. D. the Chinese children don?t have a good relationship with their parents.

People in Hong Kong speak a rich mixture of languages. Hong Kong was a British colony (殖民地) for more than 156 years before it was returned to Chinese control in 1997. English was the only official language until 1994.

Most people in Hong Kong today speak Cantonese, but Mandarin (国语) and other dialects also are heard, and English as the British used is still widely spoken and taught here. Now however, many people are choosing to learn English as it is spoken in the United States.

Victor Chan, for example, has children who attend school called Nature EQ on Saturday and Sunday to learn to say words the American way. Mr Chan says he wants his sons to learn American English, because he plans to send them to the United States for further study.

Nature EQ is one of a growing number of schools in Hong Kong that offer American English classes. Frankie Ng opened the school 17 years ago, when he had only 40 students. Today, the school has 350 students, and it does not have space for any more.

Mr Ng says American English is clear and defined. He says it is easy to teach and easily understood. That, however, is not the main concern of the children.

Student Sam Yu has another reason for studying English spoken the American way. “I think American English is getting more and more important, and is maybe taking over the dominance of British English, so I?m willing to learn it,” said Sam Yu.

Public schools in the former British colony still teach mostly British English. But the number of private language schools teaching American English is growing.

In Hong Kong?s Tseung Kwan O district, for example, the “American English Workshop school” had 20 students a week when it opened one year ago. Today, it has more than 180 each

week.

Some observers say American English is becoming the language of international business. Increased contact with American culture, like movies, television programs, computer games and the Internet is spreading American expressions and accents in areas other than business.

Language teachers in Hong Kong say wealthy people who live in mainland China are helping to increase the demand for classes in American English. Mainland Chinese are crossing into Hong Kong because it has more educational choices.

But for now, what people hear in the streets of Hong Kong is mainly traditional British English. “We can understand both, but for what we speak, we speak with the British accent,” said one local woman.

54. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the reason why so many people learn American English?

A. American English is easy and clear to understand.

B. American English may take over the dominance of British English. C. American English is widely used in areas other than business.

D. British English is a traditional and ancient language and is out of date. 55. What does the underlined word “dominance” in Paragraph 6 mean? A. advantage B. strength C. control D. influence 56. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. More and more students will give up English but learn Mandarin. B. We never hear traditional British spoken in the streets of Hong Kong.

C. there will be more and more schools like Nature EQ and the Workshop School. D. People in Hong Kong with the British accent can?t understand American English. 57. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. American English is becoming more and more popular in Hong Kong.

B. More and more people in Hong Kong want to send their children to America. C. More and more people in Hong Kong begin to speak more languages.

D. More schools in Hong Kong are offering American English classes than in other areas.

C

The ritual (惯例) always began after breakfast:“Go ahead everyone. I'll take care of the dishes!” For the next hour Dad did the dishes, singing songs like I Had a Hat When I Came In. I suppose it was strange for a boy's father to wear an apron (围裙) — but I never thought much of it until the day that Dad broke with tradition. “Tommy,” he said cheerfully. “There comes a time in every boy's life when he must take on responsibilities.” “Starting today, I want you to do the dishes on Sunday morning so your mother and I can work the crossword puzzle together.” “The dishes!?” “Anything wrong with taking over the dishes, Son?” I didn't taste a bit of breakfast that morning. Dad seemed in a jovial (愉快的) mood as he described an exceptional Yankee game seen through the eyes of Mel Allen on the radio last night. Everything grew quiet. My sister began to clear the table. My brother was scraping (刮掉) the last of the egg from his plate. My father announced: “Let's go to read the paper, Honey.” “Aren't you doing the dishes?” my mother asked. “Your oldest son has generously offered.”

So this was what my life had come to. I could bench-press (仰卧推举) my weight. Ask me to run through a rainstorm. Command me to ride the roller coaster — backward. These things I would do. But I could never do those dishes. There was nothing left but to refuse. People often say there is a special chemistry between a father and a son. Dad came back into the kitchen just as I was about to storm out. He had loosened (松开) his tie and rolled up the sleeves of his shirt — ready to relax. In his right hand was the old apron. “I want you to have this, Tommy. It'll keep your clothes from getting wet. Thanks, Son. Your mother and I appreciate this.” With that he disappeared into the Sunday paper. I looked down at the apron. It had seen better days. I could see my dad reaching for the dishes. My dark angel disappeared. Soon I was singing a song about a hat. The words came out of nowhere. And out of nowhere I knew the kind of man I wanted to be.

58. Why did the author's father ask him to do the dishes?

A. Because his father wanted to listen to a sports show on the radio.

B. Because his father thought the other children were too young for the job.

C. Because his father thought the author was old enough to take some responsibility.

D. Because it would have been shameful for his father to have worn an apron in his son's presence.

59. What does the last paragraph suggest?

A. A man should show his love for his family by doing the dishes.

B. The author finally gave in because he wanted to make his mother happy. C. The incident (事情) with the apron led the author to understand his father.

D. The author has made up his mind about the career (事业) path he wanted to take. 60. According to the article, which of the following statements is TRUE? A. The author's brother was in charge of clearing the breakfast table. B. There was a tradition of crossword puzzle solving in the family. C. The author's father seemed to enjoy washing dishes.

D. The author offered to wash the dishes because he knew his father was tired.

W: I?ll look for it later. Right now, I need your help to fix this book-shelf before I paint it. Text 3

W: You?d better take a heavy sweater. The night is cold even in summer. M: OK, and do you think it might snow, or I need my boots?

W: No, it never snows there in July, but it might rain. Don?t forget your raincoat. M: Thanks for telling me. Text 6

W: If that man gives me any more letters to type, I?ll scream. He?s given me ten already today and there?ll be more when I get back from coffee break. I?ll be here till midnight.

M: Calm down, Franny. He can't make you stay after 5p.m. Finish what you can and leave the rest for Mary.

W: But they are important letters, Joe. They should go out tonight.

M: Oh, all sorts of ways, bus, boat, train, car and plane. I caught the train from London to Dover, and then got a boat to across the channel to Calais. I met a friend on the boat who was going to Paris too. So I had a company on the train journey from Calais. In fact, she has a friend in Paris, so I stayed with them for a few days instead of in the hotel. It saved me a lot of money. W: That was lucky. What did you do there?

M: Oh, the job itself is fun. I guess there are certainly to be some problems when you have a lot of different nationalities working on the same project. W: Really? That?s terrible.

M: Sometimes I think I am mad, but the frank is “you love doing, you just can?t stop and do something else.” Text 9

M: Yeah, I am working night shift today. What are you doing here?

W: I?m trying to look for a book but it has been out for the last three weeks. M: What kind of book is it that you want so much?

W: You might not believe this, but I?m into astronomy and the book I want to read is by Stephen Hawking, who writes about the creation of the universe. Did you notice my eyes? I?ve been staying

up late at night to see the sky and stars.

M: When did you get involved with the universe? No wonder you are dozing off during the lecture this morning.

W: I know it's embarrassing, but I?m really interested in the mystery of the universe, and I?m thinking perhaps I?m in the wrong major. And I should swift to physics instead of taking drama.
